Happy Wednesday! If you can’t tell by the title, all the links today have something to do with the Wonder Woman movie. We were sharing so many awesome things on our Slack chat, I figured we should just put them all together this week!
…
HelloGiggles has a bunch of photos of the Amazonian actresses. The pictures are so sweet and fun, and the women look so strong!
The Amazon warriors were comprised of stunt-women, boxers, fighters, cross-fit enthusiasts, an equestrian stunt-double, and even a Victoria’s Secret model. The diversity is so beautiful, we’re on the verge of crying just looking at these pictures.
The last photo is definitely my favorite.

Want a new phone background or laptop wallpaper to go along with your Wonder Woman love? io9 has a couple fan-made posters, but links to other collections
The final numbers are still coming in, but Warner Bros. has predicted that Wonder Woman will bring in over $100-million in the US this opening weekend— over $220-million when you include international sales. This would make Wonder Woman the biggest opening blockbuster for a female director, and cement Diana as one of the most iconic (and lucrative) superheroes of modern cinema. So, let’s celebrate with some amazing artwork!
What’s your favorite of the collections?

This woman had to answer some questions from her mom about the Wonder Woman movie. It’s a sweet and funny exchange. But there are spoilers!

Laptop Cord Winders
I have one of these from Above the Fray, and it's great for keeping my MacBook cord contained and safe from being pulled or frayed. There are earbud winders, too! -SW

Redheadedgirl shared this link from the Native Nerd Review, on Eugene Brave Rock’s role in the film:
Brave Rock had told ICMN previously that he was permitted by director Patty Jenkins to choose what he wore, who fully respected the need for proper regalia and clothing. I was filled with pride and tears of joy as I watched him act in a way that would bring admiration and respect to his fans and the people and cultures of Indian country. His character could have exited for good at that point and I would have walked away thrilled.
Definitely give the review a full read!

Lastly, The New York Times has a profile/interview with director, Patty Jenkins:
This may be a cheesy question, but what do you want people to take away from this movie?
Did you say cheesy? Cheesy is one of the words banned in my world. I’m tired of sincerity being something we have to be afraid of doing. It’s been like that for 20 years, that the entertainment and art world has shied away from sincerity, real sincerity, because they feel they have to wink at the audience because that’s what the kids like. We have to do the real stories now. The world is in crisis.
I wanted to tell a story about a hero who believes in love, who is filled with love, who believes in change and the betterment of mankind. I believe in it. It’s terrible when it makes so many artists afraid to be sincere and truthful and emotional, and relegates them to the too-cool-for-school department. Art is supposed to bring beauty to the world.
I’m not crying, you’re crying!

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Ooh ooh ooh I want to share a link that’s pertinent to Wonder Woman, and also to the NY Times:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/06/opinion/behind-wonder-woman-is-a-great-man.html
This is an opinion piece about the awesomeness of Steve Trevor in the film (and obviously, there are spoilers for the film in there). I wanted to share because it _specifically_ made me think that heroes like Steve in this movie are _all over the place_ in Romancelandia: i.e., heroic men who stand side by side with their heroines and who aren’t afraid to let them step into the forefront of the action.
And it’s so, so seldom that we get to see this on the big screen!
Thank you for the links, especially to Native Nerd Review and your review of the film! I saw a great read about Etta Candy (http://offbeathome.com/etta-candy-wonder-woman/) that was terrific. Love all you smart bitches!
I highly recommend the “How It Should Have Ended” Wonder Women review. It makes me cry every time I watch it. He puts into words exactly what I was feeling about this movie. “I think this movie works so well because deep down we all want Wonder Women to be real.” I especially love his interpretation of the ending.
Not WW related, but I got an email abouta free book giveaway focusing on diverse characters. The giveaway page lists what kind of diversity is in each book. It was called Start Reading Diverse. I think it’s hosted on an author’s page – LC Mawson. I don’t really know much about it, but I thought I’d share.
Elyse — did you see the (free) Wonder Woman Beanie pattern? Super cute!

You joke, but I actually did get a little teary-eyed just now…
Also (slight movie spoilers ahead)… I read an article that the No Man’s Land scene almost didn’t even happen. Patty Jenkins had to argue for it. I mean, REALLY!?!

@Angela, Chris Pine has been really great about finding and taking roles like that. He’s not afraid to be ridiculous and human and not always come off as the alpha male. His Kirk also is a wonderful mix of comedy and seriousness – and also not afraid to be surrounded by strong-willed women (Uhura, Gaila, Carol, and Jaylah all come to mind). I found his Kirk and Trevor to be very similar in a lot of ways.
All this Wonder Woman wonder makes me want to actually go see a movie in an actual theater! Had to share this link:

Here’s a nice list of some of the best Wonder Woman comics/collections out there: http://www.cbr.com/wonder-woman-the-best-comic-book-stories-to-read-after-seeing-the-film/ And if your friendly local comic book store doesn’t have them, I’m sure they can be found on both eBay and Amazon. (Amazon — heh.)
@Heather S: Well, to be fair, I credit Chris Pine less with what’s in his portrayal of Kirk than what’s in the character _in general_; Shatner’s Kirk gets a bad rap a lot of the time and it’s _not deserved_. Back in April Strange Horizons ran a long but excellent essay on this very topic, which you can find here:
http://strangehorizons.com/non-fiction/columns/freshly-rememberd-kirk-drift/
That essay goes into some analysis of what we know about Kirk’s relationships with women in the Prime universe, and calls out as well the important examples that we see on camera in the show that underscore that Kirk’s not nearly as much of a womanizer as his rep would lead one to believe.
I mention this because absolutely, yes, give Mr. Pine credit for upholding some of Kirk’s best attributes. 🙂 But as a longstanding TOS fan I gotta advocate for the original Kirk too!
