Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Heroine Serves Hero’s Magical Family on Account of a Debt

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

This HaBO comes from C791e, who wants to find an urban fantasy book:

I’m not sure if I hallucinated this or not because for the life of me I can’t remember anything but the plot.

I think it may have novella length or could have been in a compilation book, but I read super fast so it could have been novel length. It was a woman whose family owed a debt to another family for something that happened a couple of generations back, like their family had some people murdered (there may have been a wedding involved?) and her ancestor didn’t help or something, just hid?

And now she’s been called to serve this family, run by a naturally attractive man.

They need her to fight in some sort of challenge by another family. I can’t remember if the guy’s family had magic or just some kind of modifications, but he could definitely fly at some point and the other family had powers of some sort too. The only ones left in her family are her, her mother, and an uncle of some sort.

I remember her telling him she was never going to have kids and her family line would be gone, so no more forced servitude. He ends up erasing the debt. I don’t remember if it was before or after the fight with the other family, but she still fights and they win, and of course they end up together. Hopefully that was coherent!

Well, this sounds fascinating.

I know this! It was an Ilona Andrews novella in a longer book. I think the novella was Grace of Small Magics?

  2. MarieC says:

Yup, Grace of Small Magics by Ilona Andrews. Love this story.

  3. Shaheen says:

It’s available in The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance; an anthology called Under Her Skin, with Jeanine Frost and Meljean Brook; and in her collection of shorts, Small Magics.

  4. @Christina OMG THANK YOU! I had the Ilona Andrews part right, but thought it was a print anthology I was looking for (in my library), not an ebook.

The novella is found in The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance, or if you want the ebook, the anthology Under Her Skin.

I must now go and reread this book! I loved it the first time around…

And this is the first time in absolute ages that I actually KNEW this HaBO. *sigh*

  6. Dana says:

Yep – Grace of Small Magics and it is fascinating. I think its one of the seminal stories for the newer Hidden Legacy series. There is also a fun relational storyline in their short story “of Swine and Roses”

  7. ReneeG says:

Dang! I knew this one (and love the story)!

  8. I went and reread GoSM… and then the whole anthology (Under Her Skin). *happy sigh*

  9. ClaireC says:

Dammit!! One I actually know, and it’s already been solved. Agree – excellent story, and I love the “Of Swine and Roses” story as well. Everyone should read their two Kinsman novellas as well!!

  10. Molly-in-MD says:

Ilona Andrews used the basic idea (magic users in families called Houses) in her new-ish Hidden Legacy series. “Ish” because the first title, Burn For Me was released a couple of years ago. The second and third/final titles are due out this year in rapid succession.

Burn For Me was waving in the wind partially because the Andrewses were working on extra books in their Kate Daniels series (which you should get your mitts onto soon, like yesterday, if you haven’t read).
