  • A Darker Shade of Magic

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab is $2.99! I’ve heard this book come recommended from several friends of mine, though I haven’t read it yet. Many readers loved the fantasy aspects and different cast of characters, but there are also readers who felt the book really slogged at times. Have you read this one?

From V.E. Schwab, the critically acclaimed author of Vicious, comes a new universe of daring adventure, thrilling power, and parallel Londons, beginning with A Darker Shade of Magic.

Kell is one of the last Travelers–magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes–as such, he can choose where he lands.

There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there’s Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne–a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London…but no one speaks of that now.Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see–a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive–and that is proving trickier than they hoped.

Songs of Love and Death by George R. R. Martin

Songs of Love and Death is $2.99! This is a scifi/fantasy anthology edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois. The collection features a lot of great authors; definitely check out the list below in the book’s description. Reviews on Goodreads say the collection is a mixed bag and some readers say the skipped to the stories of authors they enjoyed previously, while bypassing others.

IN this star-studded cross-genre anthology, seventeen of the greatest modern authors of fantasy, science fiction, and romance explore the borderlands of their genres with brand-new tales of ill-fated love. From zombie-infested woods in a postapocalyptic America to faery-haunted rural fields in eighteenth- century England, from the kingdoms of high fantasy to the alien world of a galaxy-spanning empire, these are stories of lovers who must struggle against the forces of magic and fate.

Award-winning, bestselling author Neil Gaiman demonstrates why he’s one of the hottest stars in literature today with “The Thing About Cassandra,” a subtle but chilling story of a man who meets an old girlfriend he had never expected to see.

International blockbuster bestselling author Diana Gabaldon sends a World War II RAF pilot through a stone circle to the time of her Outlander series in “A Leaf on the Winds of All Hallows.” Torn from all he knows, Jerry MacKenzie determinedly survives hardship and danger, intent on his goal of returning home to his wife and baby—no matter the cost.

New York Times bestselling author Jim Butcher presents “Love Hurts,” in which Harry Dresden takes on one of his deadliest adversaries and in the process is forced to confront the secret desires of his own heart.

Just the smallest sampling promises unearthly delights, but look also for stories by New York Times bestselling romance authors Jo Beverley and Mary Jo Putney, and by such legends of the fantasy genre as Peter S. Beagle and Tanith Lee, as well as many other popular and beloved writers, including Marjorie M. Liu, Jacqueline Carey, Carrie Vaughn, and Robin Hobb. This exquisite anthology, crafted by the peerless editing team of George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois, is sure to leave you under its spell.

  • Dissension

    Dissension by Stacey Berg

RECOMMENDED: Dissension by Stacey Berg is 99c! Carrie read this scifi novel and was pleasantly surprised, but wanted more romance. She gave it a B+:

Overall, the plot moves fast and is exciting, the world building is interesting, and the sense of place is beautifully done. Hunter’s perspective is both so completely unusual and yet so relatable that it pulls the story past any flaws – whatever is happening, the reader wants Hunter to be OK. This is the first book in a series, and I was left wondering if Hunter might eventually pull a happy ending out of this story after all. I’ll be awaiting the sequel eagerly, but not in hopes of a happy romance (OK, I’ll hope a little). Mostly, I just want to see what Hunter gets up to next.

For four hundred years, the Church has led the remnants of humanity as they struggle for survival in the last inhabited city. Echo Hunter 367 is exactly what the Church created her to be: loyal, obedient, lethal. A clone who shouldn’t care about anything but her duty. Who shouldn’t be able to.

When rebellious citizens challenge the Church’s authority, it is Echo’s duty to hunt them down before civil war can tumble the city back into the dark. But Echo hides a deadly secret: doubt. And when Echo’s mission leads her to Lia, a rebel leader who has a secret of her own, Echo is forced to face that doubt. For Lia holds the key to the city’s survival, and Echo must choose between the woman she loves and the purpose she was born to fulfill.

  • Nightfall

    Nightfall by Ellen Connor

Nightfall by Ellen Connor is $2.99! This is the first book in the Dark Age Dawning trilogy and I really love the covers in the series. This is a post-apocalyptic, paranormal romance with forced proximity and a military hero. Readers say the action can get gritty and graphic at times, but many loved the characters so much that they wanted the book to be longer so they could enjoy them a little bit more.

First in a stunning new post-apocalyptic paranormal romance trilogy.

Growing up with an unstable, often absent father who preached about the end of the world, Jenna never thought in her wildest nightmares that his predictions would come true. Or that he would have a plan in place to save her-one that includes the strong, stoic man who kidnaps and takes her to a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest.

The mysterious ex-Marine named Mason owes a life-debt to Jenna’s father. Skilled and steadfast, he’s ready for the prophesied Change, but Jenna proves tough to convince. Until the power grid collapses and mutant dogs attack-vicious things that reek of nature gone wrong.

When five strangers appear, desperate to escape the bloodthirsty packs, Jenna defies her protector and rescues them. As technology fails and the old world falls away, Jenna changes too, forever altered by supernatural forces. To fight for their future, she and Mason must learn to trust their instinctive passion-a flame that will see them through the bitter winter, the endless nights, and the violence of a new Dark Age.

  1. KellyM says:

A Darker Shade of Magic sounds like a book my husband would really enjoy, if he read. Sigh.
So I am getting him the audible book to listen too. I love listening to Steven Crossley as a narrator. He also co-narrated Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

  2. SusanH says:

I loved the first two books in A Darker Shade of Magic and am eager to read the next. It has everything – a cross-dressing female would-be pirate, a bisexual prince, multiple Regency-era Londons, magic…. It’s one of my favorite fantasy series.

  3. Msb says:

I’d like to recommend two SF books by Becky Chambers, “A long way to a small angry planet” and “A closed and common orbit”. Both blend SF interests with strong love stories, though they can take unusual forms.

  4. Gloriamarie says:

Nightfall hs me worried about birth control. An apocalypse would preclude jaunts to the local pharmacy.

  5. Varian says:

Songs of Love and Death is a mix bag, but it still holds a special place in my heart since it has the first m/m story I ever read. (The story by Jacqueline Carey.)

  6. Mary says:

Nightfall and its sequels were great! One of my favorite post apocalyptic worlds.
