  • Along Came Love

Along Came Love by Tracey Livesay

Along Came Love by Tracey Livesay is $1.99! This book just came out THIS MONTH! It was also featured in Hide Your Wallet. Livesay writes smart, competent characters, but some reviewers that the heroine was a bit too Manic Pixie Dream Girl for them. Anyone interested?

When a silly, impulsive decision lands free-spirited India Shaw behind bars in San Francisco, she has no choice but to call the only person she knows in the unfamiliar city—the very man she abandoned after a steamy two-day fling. The fact that she’s pregnant with his child is something she’d rather not divulge.

Tech executive Michael Black never thought he’d hear from the quirky beauty after she left his bed four months ago, much less be called upon to post bail. He’s got his hands full with a corporate merger that could make or break his career, but his honorable nature—and an overwhelming need to see her again—means he can’t just leave her in jail. And when India reveals the truth about her pregnancy, Mike insists she stay with him until the baby is born.

India doesn’t want to depend on him for anything, but their constant proximity stirs up feelings she can’t ignore. She’s never desired a family before and she knows a future with Mike isn’t possible . . . but then along came love to shake up all her plans.

  • Love is Red

Love is Red by Sophie Jaff

RECOMMENDED: Love is Red by Sophie Jaff is $1.99! I LOVED THIS BOOK! It defies genre categorization, but I gave it an A:

Hannah Wood, associate editor at Harper, reached out to me about the book. Normally, I’m pretty knowledgeable about books coming out, but this one wasn’t even on my radar. The cover reminds me of a YA novel, which isn’t a genre I read often, and admittedly, I was skeptical. I couldn’t exactly nail down the genre, but that’s really part of the beauty of the book. It’s not just one thing. It’s fantasy. It’s thriller. It’s romance. It’s horror.

    And it’s good. Real good.

This electrifying, addictive, and hypnotically beautiful debut spins suspense and literary fantasy into a stunning epic—the first volume in the Night Song Trilogy—ablaze with fear, mystery, and possibility.

Katherine Emerson was born to fulfill a dark prophecy centuries in the making, but she isn’t aware that this future awaits. However, there is one man who knows the truth: A killer stalking the women of New York, a monster the media dubs the “Sickle Man” because of the way he turns his victims into canvasses for his mesmerizing, twisted art.

Unleashed upon Manhattan after lying dormant for centuries, the Sickle Man kills to harvest the precious hues of his victims. As his palette grows, so too does his power. Every death brings him closer to the one color, and the one woman, he must possess at any cost.

While the city hunts the Sickle Man, Katherine must decide what to do about two men who have unexpectedly entered her life: handsome and personable David, and alluring yet aloof Sael. Though she’s becoming increasingly torn between them, how well does she really know them? And why is she suddenly plagued by disturbing visions?

Told from the alternating viewpoints of Katherine and the Sickle Man,Love Is Red is a riveting thriller that unfolds into an intense story of obsession and control, desire and fate. Katherine may not realize it yet, but with this haunting novel—as arrestingly original as Marisha Pessl’s Night Film, Patrick Süskind’s Perfume, and Lauren Beukes’s The Shining Girls—her moment of awakening is here. And soon she will find herself fighting a battle at the edges of our world, among forces more dangerous than we can possibly imagine.

  • Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge

Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge by Paul Krueger

Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge by Paul Krueger is $2.99! The premise of this urban fantasy sounds really cool where the characters battle demons with “magically-mixed cocktails.” However, some readers had trouble suspending their disbelief and found it to be a bit cheesy. Have you read this one?

Bailey Chen is fresh out of college with all the usual new-adult demons: no cash, no job offers, and an awkward relationship with Zane, the old friend she kinda-sorta hooked up with during high school.

But when Zane introduces Bailey to his monster-fighting bartender friends, her demons become a lot more literal. It turns out evil creatures stalk the city streets after hours, and they can only be hunted with the help of magically-mixed cocktails: vodka grants super-strength, whiskey offers the power of telekinesis, and tequila lets its drinker fire blasts of elemental energy. But will all of these powers be enough for Bailey to halt a mysterious rash of gruesome deaths? And what will she do when the safety of a “real world” job beckons?

This sharp and funny urban fantasy is perfect for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and grown-up readers of Harry Potter. Includes 14 recipes from a book of ancient cocktail lore.

Shucks! The one with the SWAT team is over £4 on Amazon UK. I know Brexit-sterling is weak but, really!

  2. Cas says:

I would like to suggest that we stop putting down characters for being MPDGs… unless the author is a man. I feel like this was a useful descriptive phrase in the beginning because it pointed out sexism: when a male author would write unbelievably about a woman. Now, though, it seems like the term has caught on and is being used in a different way. I suggest we simply get specific about what makes a character seem believable in fiction. 🙂

“Less Than Angels” by Barbara Pym is on for $1.99 right now. If you’re craving a novel of manners & you’ve made it through all the Jane Austens, Barbara might be the best way to get your next fix.

  4. Lace says:

To my disappointment, I bounced off the first book in Livesay’s series. From the description I thought to be all over the book, but I didn’t find the characters consistent or plausible enough. Half-tempted to see if she’s gotten stronger, but there are a lot of books to be read.

It’s not on “sale” but I’M SO EXCITED about “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls” from Timbuktu Labs. I’m only affliated with them in the sense I backed them and purchased books. The amount of money they raised during their kickstarter and then indiegogo campaigns also may have restored my faith in humanity this election year. I would think it belonged on the bitchery’s holiday gift lists! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/good-night-stories-for-rebel-girls-books-women#/
