Paranormal Romance & All Sorts of Fantasy

  • Unholy Ghosts

    Unholy Ghosts by Stacia Kane

Unholy Ghosts by Stacia Kane is 99c! This is an urban fantasy that has been recommended by readers quite a few times! It was mentioned in the comments in a GS vs STA post about heroines who don’t want kids (which I know many people like to read).

Reader K Swan also had this to say:

I haven’t seen anyone recommend Stacia Kane’s Downside series. Her female “hero” Chess is a church witch junkie, whose dependence makes you want to smack her up side the head. But Kane’s world building, and Chess’s romance with Terrible is heart rending and pulls you into a strange, dark place. The Audible version is narrated by Bahni Turpin, whose throaty narration, and handling of the criminal street dialect is awesome.

    THE DEPARTED HAVE ARRIVED.

The world is not the way it was. The dead have risen, and the living are under attack. The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased. Enter Chess Putnam, a fully tattooed witch and freewheeling ghost hunter. She’s got a real talent for banishing the wicked dead. But Chess is keeping a dark secret: She owes a lot of money to a murderous drug lord named Bump, who wants immediate payback in the form of a dangerous job that involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust for a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump’s ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah.

  • The Queen of the Tearling

The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen

The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen is $1.99 at Amazon and Google:Play! Perusing the GR reviews shows that readers either loved it or really hated it. Many had issues with the world-building, though quite a number of readers praised the unconventional heroine. This is also the start of a trilogy. We’ve featured the book on sale before and there was a great discussion of the book’s elements in the comments.

On her nineteenth birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa. But though she may be inexperienced and sheltered, Kelsea is not defenseless: Around her neck hangs the Tearling sapphire, a jewel of immense magical power; and accompanying her is the Queen’s Guard, a cadre of brave knights led by the enigmatic and dedicated Lazarus. Kelsea will need them all to survive a cabal of enemies who will use every weapon—from crimson-caped assassins to the darkest blood magic—to prevent her from wearing the crown.

Despite her royal blood, Kelsea feels like nothing so much as an insecure girl, a child called upon to lead a people and a kingdom about which she knows almost nothing. But what she discovers in the capital will change everything, confronting her with horrors she never imagined. An act of singular daring will throw Kelsea’s kingdom into tumult, unleashing the vengeance of the tyrannical ruler of neighboring Mortmesne: the Red Queen, a sorceress possessed of the darkest magic. Now Kelsea will begin to discover whom among the servants, aristocracy, and her own guard she can trust.

But the quest to save her kingdom and meet her destiny has only just begun—a wondrous journey of self-discovery and a trial by fire that will make her a legend…if she can survive.

  1. Ren Benton says:

I loved the first few Downside books. I am all about deeply, deeply screwed up characters, and the cast is full of them. The world is so vividly dirty. It was delicious.

I had to give up after several books, though, because every single person around Chess had demonstrably changed, while she remained exactly how she’d been on page 1 of the first book. I know The Power of Friendship and Love™ doesn’t cure everything that ails you overnight, but during the course of three or four books, you should at least make a token effort to be less of a disaster. I can’t keep rooting for someone who doesn’t even try.

  2. Lostshadows says:

I was kinda meh on Queen of the Tearling. It seemed interesting, but I just couldn’t get into it for some reason.

  3. Kim W. says:

Just wanted to share that I had a double take when I saw this post, because I have gone under the name K Swan in other contexts (my newly “rebranded” maiden name started with Swan).

  4. CelineB says:

A few deals I noticed on Amazon (I haven’t checked other sites) are The Engagement Game by Jenny Holiday is .99, Chasing Lady Amelia by Maya Rodale and A Better Man by Candis Terry are $1.99.

  5. Crystal says:

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill is $3.99. I’ve been waiting for a sale (I read it from the library a couple years back) and snapped it up like a shark with a seal pup (sorry, it’s Halloween, my descriptors are bound to be creepy).

  6. Colette says:

I bought Medusa’s Heart by Joey K Hill in the ARe 50% rebate sale. Did a lot of damage in that sale. Now I have to go lie down. Oh dear…

  7. Tara says:

I read the Dark Protectors series and recommend those books for that price. I recall the first one being really annoying (I think bc of both insta-lust and something about not believing anyone with a kid would make that heroine’s choices) but don’t let that put you off as all the others in the series were purely entertaining. It was a good holiday binge for me (there are several books beyond the ones in this bundle).

  8. Heather S says:

I loooooooved Queen of the Tearling! The third book will be out later this month! ^_^

  9. Sita says:

I actually gave up on Queen of the Tearling. My comments (from my Goodreads): Things that annoy me so far about this book:
Kelsea, the new Queen, says how handsome/good looking the members of her guard are. Then a few pages later, Kelsea notes how “they were old, certainly too old for Kelsea to find them attractive.”

Also, hawks are apparently now a viable form of assassination. WTF.

The world building also was severely lacking, and the author contradicts herself several times in just the short amount of pages I read before giving up in disgust.
