Help A Bitch Out

HaBO: Hero’s “Dead” Wife Kidnaps Men

This HaBO is from Alison, who’s searching for a historical romance. Also, trigger warning for the description below:

I remember reading this book around maybe 2007 or so. I got it from my local library in the paperback section, so it wasn’t catalogued.

It had some kooky elements. It’s set in medieval times I think. The hero is forced to marry the heroine for some reason. He is very gun shy about marriage because his first wife who “died” under mysterious circumstances cuckolded him with every man who came across her path. Maybe even with his best friend? So I think he’s also under suspicion for her murder.

The heroine, of course, slowly changes his mind about women. But someone has it out for her or maybe the hero. I seem to remember accidents.

What stood out for me most was, and here come some crazysauce, the wife isn’t dead. She’s living in some secluded corner of his estate or somewhere and she kidnaps and rapes men by giving them an aphrodisiac. She has a giant, mute man who helps her move the men around and tie them to her bed and later dispose of their bodies. I think she might be portrayed as a nymphomaniac.

What is this book?

Whoa.

Yup, I read this. Can’t remember the name.

  2. QOTU says:

I think it’s Amanda Quick. One of the old ones when she released sets of 3 that started with the same letter. Maybe something happened in a fountain? Hero maybe has a daughter…

  3. Olivia says:

    Maybe Quick’s Seduction or Desire?

  4. Alison says:

I feel like it might have been Virginia Henley or maybe Bertrice small. Definitely not Amanda quick. It was too kooky for her.

  5. Lara says:

There was a Bertrice Small where the hero’s ex-wife was some kind of sexy evil sorceress-type. I think the book was called “Hellion” or “Hellcat”? Literally the only other thing I remember about it is that the hero utters the immortal line “Now I am going to fuck you, wife.”, and I was reading that bit wide-eyed when my mom stalked in and demanded to know what ON EARTH the library had let me borrow.

  6. Lizo says:

I swear I’ve read this, too. I want to say it took place in Scotland. Who does crazy Highland romances?

  7. Alea says:

There’s a different Bertrice Small set in Medieval Scotland which has some resemblance with this — the hero obtained a divorce from his first wife after he caught her with his bastard half-brother. She’s kept in a small croft on his land & resembles the description above. The title is The Captive Heart & it has all sorts of other crazy sauce in it as well (a vengeful father-in-law determined to make the heroine his wife . . . )

  8. Belle says:

Pretty sure its Hellion by Beatrice Small

  9. Olivia says:

I don’t think it’s Hellion by Small. That is actually my first Small book and it pretty much leaves an imprint. The villain was an ex-lover of the hero and was pissed when he married the heroine, which the king decreed. Her and possibly her half-brother(?) kidnap the heroine and imprison her in their remote castle/tower. I remember being amazed when the adult toys came out, that was a first for teenage me.
The villain does also kidnap the hero and drugs him, I can’t remember if she actually rapes him or not, or if he manages to overcome it and realizes the heroine is also in the same castle. I remember it also took the hero weeks/months to find the castle.

    Whoa indeed

    Crazysauce indeed

No idea but curious to know

  11. Ashley says:

Hannah Howell has some crazy sauce plot lines.

  12. Ellen says:

This sounds real similar to one of Hannah Howell’s Murray books although in that the wife was dead but her female lover wasn’t and wants revenge.

The one I’m thinking of was Highland Groom.

  13. Alison says:

I’m pretty certain it’s not Hannah howell. It didn’t feel like a Howell book. I’m going to try to find a copy of hellion and see.
