Help A Bitch Out

HaBO: Esther and Space Disease

This HaBO request comes from Elissa, who is trying to track down a YA novel for a friend:

A friend of mine asked me about a YA that a friend of hers is asking about. It’s Inception-level book searching over here. Anyway, I am drawing a huge blank, so I told her I would ask the Bitchery!

Here is what she gave me:

Someone on my Facebook is looking for the title of a YA (maybe light sci-fi) book that has the following characteristics:

-there is a disease (possibly from space)
-there is a railway bridge the main characters sit on a lot
-the main character’s name is Esther
-the main character has an older sister who (SPOILER) is actually her mother
-maybe something about dream-eaters?

Just wondering if it rang any bells! I’ve been Googling and Googling.

I am now on a mission to find this and any help is appreciated!

Does anyone know this one?

When I searched, a YA Sci-Fi series came up with a main character named Esther. It’s called Wasteland by Laurence Klavan and Susan Kim. The first book is also called “Wasteland”.

No idea what the title is but I am intrigued

  3. Recko says:

Starbright and the Dream Eater by Joy Cowley sounds spot on…

    I’d second Wasteland:
    Wasteland (Mar 2013)
    By: Kim, Susan, 1958-
In a post-apocalyptic world where everyone dies at age nineteen and rainwater contains a killer virus, loners Esther and Eli band together with a group of mutant, hermaphroditic outsiders to fight a corrupt ruler and save the town of Prin.
    Series: Wasteland trilogy, 1

I’m pretty sure that Recko is right. Starbright and the Dream Eater has both the dream-eating part and the part about the sister is the mom.

Holy mackerel. TWO books fit this randomness?? Please let us know when your friend decides which it is.
