HaBO Double Dose: Oil Tycoons & Chest Hair

This HaBO request comes from Danica, who is searching for not one, but two contemporary romances:

My TBR has grown to scary proportions from reading others’ HaBO requests and suggestions, so I’m unlurking to ask for the Pink Palace’s help in finding two of the first romances I ever read. They were probably Harlequins, but I don’t remember for sure. I read them in 1990-91, and both were contemporary romances.

Book one is very vague. The heroine was a widowed virgin (hubby was in the closet for inheritance reasons), short and built like Barbie. Hero was a largely built Texas oil tycoon? I remember something about a Stetson. There may also be a child who died with hubby. Beyond that, the only scene that stands out is lovin’ in a jacuzzi, where the hero practically praises the Lord over her endowments.

Book two is slightly less vague, but still memorable. TW for sexual assault. Single heroine and hero become guardians of an infant girl and move into a family home together. I don’t remember if the couple knew each other previously.

Two scenes stand out from this one. The first time each sees the other naked – the hero screams bloody murder, so the heroine runs in, finds him in the bathtub bathing the baby. He is in serious pain because baby fingers + chest hair = ouch! The second scene gets the TW. There’s a creepy guy from the heroine’s work (?) who attacks her, leaving distinct, deep scratches on her breasts. Th hero helps clean her up after. The hero stops flirting and touching her while they both cope, and when they finally get between the sheets, he makes a point of kissing the fading marks.

These books have been stuck in my head for 25 years and I need closure for both of them. Please help!

I’m more aghast that the early nineties were twenty-five years ago.

How sad is it that I’m pretty positive that I’ve read both of these, and haven’t a clue? The first sounds like a Diana Palmer. That’s all I’ve got.

  2. Cristie says:

The second book reminds me of Linda Howard’s Heartbreaker except there was no baby in that one. I hope someone figures this out because I feel like I read this one but can’t remember the title.

  3. Angela says:

I think the second one is Love Beyond Reason by Sandra Brown!

  4. Danica says:

I knew that someone would recognize one of these books. Thank you. Angela, you were right, it is Love Beyond Reason! I skimmed through, and both of the scenes are there, basically as I remembered. The preteen me who “borrowed” these from Mom thanks you.

I wish there were more to tell about the first book. The couple met in a hotel bar, maybe? And I think the jacuzzi scene may have been their first time together. I do recall dialogue and internals about whether tab A was too big for slot B, and that Hero was afraid of crushing and/or ripping her apart.

As an aside, I can’t believe how old these books (and I) am!

no idea, but want in on the comments in case someone figures it out. The first one sounds very familiar to be but I got nutthin.

  6. Kate says:

I feel like the first one is also a Sandra Brown book, but they’re all mushing together in my head now… maybe one of the Texas! series?
