  • My Fair Princess

My Fair Princess by Vanessa Kelly

My Fair Princess by Vanessa Kelly is 99c! This book came out in August and made our new releases post for that month! It’s a My Fair Lady retelling, which I know will appeal to some. Readers loved the enemies to lovers romance so much and many described it as a slow burn. However, some readers had some issues with the heroine’s characterization.

First, Vanessa Kelly brought readers The Renegade Royals. Now, in a delightfully witty new series, she introduces The Improper Princesses—three young women descended from royalty, each bound for her own thrilling adventure . . .

Despite being the illegitimate daughter of a prince, Gillian Dryden is happily ignorant of all social graces. After growing up wild in Italy, Gillian has been ordered home to England to find a suitable husband. And Charles Valentine Penley, the excessively proper, distractingly handsome Duke of Leverton, has agreed to help transform her from a willful tomboy to a blushing debutante.

Powerful and sophisticated, Charles can make or break reputations with a well-placed word. But his new protégée, with her habit of hunting bandits and punching earls, is a walking scandal. The ton is aghast . . . but Charles is thoroughly intrigued. Tasked with taking the hoyden in hand, he longs to take her in his arms instead. Can such an outrageous attraction possibly lead to a fairytale ending?

  • The Sekhmet Bed

The Sekhmet Bed by Libbie Hawker

The Sekhmet Bed by Libbie Hawker is 99c! This is historical fiction set in Egypt and is the first book in the She-King series. The other books in the series are also on sale! Some readers had issues with the plausibility of the plot, but said the writing was absolutely beautiful. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

Queen Ahmose knows her duty: to give the Pharaoh a son. But she is young, and has just watched her closest friend die in childbirth. If the Pharaoh plants his seed in her she will die the same way, in a pool of blood, surrounded by wailing women. She has her husband’s love, but a king must have an heir…and even the Pharaoh’s patience will run out. Meanwhile, a lesser queen – Ahmose’s own sister – has given him three sweet, bright children, all of them boys. Ahmose knows her grasp on the Pharaoh’s heart is loosening.

Desperate, she begs the gods for courage to become a mother. They give her more than courage: she is granted a vision of a shining prince, her son – a gift for Egypt who will bring glory to the land. He will be more than the son of a king. He will be the son of the god Amun.

But when the child arrives, it’s a girl.

Ahmose knows the vision was not wrong. Her daughter Hatshepsut has a male soul, and Amun intends the girl to rule. But the Pharaoh will not scandalize Egypt by proclaiming a female successor. If she cannot convince the Pharaoh to accept Hatshepsut as his heir, everything Ahmose loves will be destroyed.

  • Horns

    Horns by Joe Hill

Horns by Joe Hill is $1.99! No, you’re not imagining things. That is Daniel Radcliffe on the cover as he was the star of the film adaptation. This is a horror fantasy novel and perfect for October. Some readers found the writing a bit uneven, while others thought it was a rather interesting story. Trigger warning for content mention in the description. Have you read this one?

Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with a thunderous hangover, a raging headache . . . and a pair of horns growing from his temples.

At first Ig thought the horns were a hallucination, the product of a mind damaged by rage and grief. He had spent the last year in a lonely, private purgatory, following the death of his beloved, Merrin Williams, who was raped and murdered under inexplicable circumstances. A mental breakdown would have been the most natural thing in the world. But there was nothing natural about the horns, which were all too real.

Once the righteous Ig had enjoyed the life of the blessed: born into privilege, the second son of a renowned musician and younger brother of a rising late-night TV star, he had security, wealth, and a place in his community. Ig had it all, and more—he had Merrin and a love founded on shared daydreams, mutual daring, and unlikely midsummer magic.

But Merrin’s death damned all that. The only suspect in the crime, Ig was never charged or tried. And he was never cleared. In the court of public opinion in Gideon, New Hampshire, Ig is and always will be guilty because his rich and connected parents pulled strings to make the investigation go away. Nothing Ig can do, nothing he can say, matters. Everyone, it seems, including God, has abandoned him. Everyone, that is, but the devil inside. . . .

  • Mythos Academy Bundle

Mythos Academy Bundle by Jennifer Estep

The Mythos Academy Bundle by Jennifer Estep is $1.99! This is a set with a novella and first three books in the Mythos Academy YA series. Readers say the series is fast-paced and they’re quick, enjoyable reads. But some felt like how many crappy things can happen to this poor heroine. Any fans of the series here?

    First Frost

I am Gwen Frost, and I have a Gypsy gift. It’s called psychometry – that’s a fancy way of saying that I see images in my head and get flashes of other people’s memories off almost everything I touch, even guys.

My gift makes me kind of nosy. Okay, okay, maybe a lot nosy–to the point of obsession sometimes. I want to know everything about everyone around me. But even I don’t want to know the secrets my friend Paige is hiding or the terrible loss that will send me to a new school – Mythos Academy, where the teachers aren’t preparing us for the SATs, but to battle Reapers of Chaos. Now I have no friends and no idea how my gift fits in with all these warrior whiz kids. The only thing I do know is that my life is never, ever going to be the same. . .

    Touch of Frost

My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy — a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody’s head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.

But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I’m determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why – especially since I should have been the one who died…

    Kiss of Frost

Logan Quinn was trying to kill me.

My Spartan classmate relentlessly pursued me, swinging his sword at me over and over again, the shining silver blade inching closer to my throat every time. A smile tugged up his lips, and his ice-blue eyes practially glowed with the thrill of battle. . .

I’m Gwen Frost, a second-year warrior-in-training at Mythos Academy, and I have no idea how I’m going to survive the rest of the semester. One day, I’m getting schooled in swordplay by the guy who broke my heart–the drop-dead gorgeous Logan who slays me every time. Then, an invisible archer in the Library of Antiquities decides to use me for target practice. And now, I find out that someone at the academy is really a Reaper bad guy who wants me dead. I’m afraid if I don’t learn how to live by the sword–with Logan’s help–I just might die by the sword. . .

    Dark Frost

I’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me–again.

Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects–and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me? It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me–and I’m in for the fight of my life.

  1. Ren Benton says:

A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay, which had been sitting on my wish list since Elyse reviewed one of his other books here, is $1.99 at Amazon and Google Play. (When I checked elsewhere in the wee hours, it was still in the $12 range, but they may have caught up since.) I’ve blown off being a productive member of society most of the morning and am enjoying it (the book as well as giving the middle finger to adulting) quite a lot.

  2. CelineB says:

Sleepless in Manhattan by Sarah Morgan is .99 only at Amazon so far. I really enjoyed this one. The best friend of the older brother i the hero which is one of my favorite tropes.

While only tangentially related, Daniel Radcliffe fans will hearing him rap “Alphabet Aerobics” by Blackalicious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKdV5FvXLuI

  4. Jess says:

Mmmm, I like the premise of the Mythos Academy series, but I’m super not feeling the “Gypsy magic” thing. And I’ve been horribly burned by Jennifer Estep’s work before (the first chapter of Spider’s Bite still gives me a bad case of The Rages™).

  5. Meg says:

I got My Fair Princess thanks to the new releases post, and I wound up going through a huge chunk of Vanessa Kelly’s back library. It’s pretty good and worth checking out, especially for the price.

  6. Katie Lynn says:

31% off all books at carina press’s site using code “BOO31” through the 31st. There are some great titles. Big fan of Annabeth Albert, Lynda Aicher, and Jen Doyle, all of whom have books published by carina if I recall correctly

  7. Crystal says:

Joe is a good writer, but Horns wasn’t my favorite book by him (uneven is about right for that one). That would be NOS4A2, followed closely by The Fireman. Heart-Shaped Box was a good read too, it was the first one that got him a lot of attention, and, well, got him outed as Stephen King’s son (a fact that he had successfully hidden, even from his agent, for several years, until he was pretty sure that he gotten published on his own merits).
