  • A Promise of Fire

A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

RECOMMENDED: A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet is $1.99! I absolutely loved this book and it’s the best book I’ve read so far this year. I gave the book an A:

I can say, without a doubt, that A Promise of Fire is going on my keeper shelf. I want more of these characters and I want more of this world. I cannot remember the last time I wanted to both savor and devour a book, and Bouchet’s writing is so engaging and magical that I wish she had some sort of backlist I could dive into for the next few months. If you’re even slightly tempted by this review or from the chapter one excerpt, buy this book. Because I need more people to discuss it with, pronto!

KINGDOMS WILL RISE AND FALL FOR HER…

“Cat” Catalia Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods—and her homicidal mother—have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever.

BUT NOT IF SHE CAN HELP IT

Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm—until he realizes he wants her for much more than her magic. Cat fights him at every turn, but Griffin’s fairness, loyalty, and smoldering advances make him increasingly hard to resist and leave her wondering if life really does have to be short, and lived alone.

  • Black Widow: Forever Red

Black Widow: Forever Red by Margaret Stohl

Black Widow: Forever Red by Margaret Stohl is 99c! This is a YA novelization about Black Widow and Carrie gave it a B-:

Forever Red is a young adult novel about the Marvel character, Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff). While I think my teenaged self would have adored this book, my adult self thought it was…OK. It had some great moments, mostly courtesy of Tony Stark, and some good action, but it wasn’t incredibly engrossing.

Enter the world of the Avengers’ iconic master spy

Natasha Romanoff is one of the world’s most lethal assassins. Trained from a young age in the arts of death and deception, Natasha was given the title of Black Widow by Ivan Somodorov, her brutal teacher at the Red Room, Moscow’s infamous academy for operatives.

Ava Orlova is just trying to fit in as an average Brooklyn teenager, but her life has been anything but average. The daughter of a missing Russian quantum physicist, Ava was once subjected to a series of ruthless military experiments-until she was rescued by Black Widow and placed under S.H.I.E.L.D. protection. Ava has always longed to reconnect with her mysterious savior, but Black Widow isn’t really the big sister type.

    Until now.

When children all over Eastern Europe begin to go missing, and rumors of smuggled Red Room tech light up the dark net, Natasha suspects her old teacher has returned-and that Ava Orlova might be the only one who can stop him. To defeat the madman who threatens their future, Natasha and Ava must unravel their pasts. Only then will they discover the truth about the dark-eyed boy with an hourglass tattoo who haunts Ava’s dreams. . . .

Black Widow: Forever Red features all the heart-pounding adventure readers expect from Marvel, written by #1 New York Times best-selling author Margaret Stohl. Uncover a new side of the Marvel Universe that will thrill loyal fans and newcomers alike, as Stohl reveals the untold story of Black Widow for the very first time.

  • When Next We Love

When Next We Love by Heather Graham

When Next We Love by Heather Graham is $1.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is a reissue of a 1983 contemporary romance and I’m kind of digging the new cover. It also has an enemies-to-lovers plot with forced proximity. Some readers say that the book feels dated and the hero can be a bit of a jerk, while others found it emotional and intense. Have you read this one?

Trapped by a storm and with no way out, Leigh must face the man that she both despises and desires
After the death of her rock star husband, Richard, Leigh swore off musicians. When Derek, her husband’s best friend, summons her to his Star Island estate in the Florida Keys, it is with trepidation that she makes the trip. Leigh and Derek never got along, and their bitterness toward each other has lasted beyond her husband’s death. When she arrives at Derek’s home, Leigh is stunned to learn that he wants to complete Richard’s unfinished music. As a tropical storm hits the Keys, Leigh is stranded with nothing to do but give it a try. But what will happen when they realize that beneath their mutual distrust lies an abundance of undiscovered chemistry?

  • Enchanting the Beast

Enchanting the Beast by Kathryne Kennedy

Enchanting the Beast by Kathryne Kennedy is $1.99! This is the third book in the Relics of Merlin series and it’s a historical fantasy romance with Beauty & the Beast elements. Some readers found it had a great mix of historical elements and paranormal action. The heroine is also 40, while the shifter hero is 27. However, some felt there were a few noticeable plot holes. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

Dark Things Lurk in Grimspell Castle

Sir Nicodemus Wulfson is haunted by memories of murder—and ghosts. He brings in a ghost-hunter in the form of celebrated spiritualist Lady Philomena Radcliff, and promptly, all hell breaks loose. Is Philomena a threat to his already suffering family? Or can Nico trust his burgeoning attraction to her?

Is it Him She Should Fear?

Lady Philomena has resigned herself to a life of spinsterhood performing séances for the aristocracy—until she meets sexy young werewolf Sir Nico. She agrees to try ridding his castle of its increasingly restless spirits. But there are more mysteries within Grimspell Castle than even Nico is aware of, and when a local girl turns up dead, Phil wonders if she’s risking her life as well as her heart.

A Promise of Fire is wonderful – It is the best book that I have read this year as well. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

  2. CelineB says:

I went ahead and bought A Promise of Fire even though I have it checked out at the library. I’ve renewed it twice and still haven’t gotten around to reading it. I need to make a point of reading it soon instead of letting it sit on my kindle!

  6. Lora says:

i may read the black widow book just because i’m glad there ARE these books for young girls. I pretty much read Anne of Green Gables and Sweet Valley High for a good deal of my formative years. So yay for variety now.

  7. Jen says:

CelineB, this is me exactly! I’ve checked out Promise of Fire twice but never get around to reading it. I think I’m just going to buy it as well even though I technically have it on loan still! 🙂

  8. Alex says:

At first glance it looks like that dude on the cover of Enchanting the Beast is surfing the sky while his wolf beast-familiar watches over him from the stars. Then I noticed the house in the background. Reality is disappointing 🙁

  9. paige says:

I read about 25 percent of Promise of Fire but couldn’t get into it.

  10. SusanE says:

I went to buy Promise of Fire for my Nook but it is $3.74 so I passed.

@Alex, when I saw the sky surfing cover I thought I had accidentally clicked on a cover snark link. Maybe later?

  11. LisaJo885 says:

The description for A Promise of Fire on the BN.com site starts with this:
“I can say, without a doubt, that A Promise of Fire is going on my keeper shelf…I cannot remember the last time I wanted to both savor and devour a book.” — Smart Bitches, Trashy Books

    Love it!
