  • In the Middle of Somewhere

In the Middle of Somewhere by Roan Parrish

In the Middle of Somewhere by Roan Parrish is 99c! This is a gay romance that is a 2016 DABWAHA nominee. The book made it to round two, but was beaten by Elle Kennedy’s The Deal. Reader Judy W. called the book “outstanding” in a previous Whatcha Reading, though some found the dialogue to be repetitive with too much filler. Have you read this one?

Daniel Mulligan is tough, snarky, and tattooed, hiding his self-consciousness behind sarcasm. Daniel has never fit in—not at home in Philadelphia with his auto mechanic father and brothers, and not at school where his Ivy League classmates looked down on him. Now, Daniel’s relieved to have a job at a small college in Holiday, Northern Michigan, but he’s a city boy through and through, and it’s clear that this small town is one more place he won’t fit in.

Rex Vale clings to routine to keep loneliness at bay: honing his muscular body, perfecting his recipes, and making custom furniture. Rex has lived in Holiday for years, but his shyness and imposing size have kept him from connecting with people.

When the two men meet, their chemistry is explosive, but Rex fears Daniel will be another in a long line of people to leave him, and Daniel has learned that letting anyone in can be a fatal weakness. Just as they begin to break down the walls keeping them apart, Daniel is called home to Philadelphia, where he discovers a secret that changes the way he understands everything.

  • Didn’t I Warn You

Didn’t I Warn You by Amber Bardan

RECOMMENDEDDidn’t I Warn You by Amber Bardan is 99c! I wrote a Lightning Review of this one and gave it an A-. It reminds me a lot of an Old Skool Beauty & the Beast-esque plot line. However, I will warn that it requires a bit of suspension of disbelief, but it’s slathered with some crazysauce.

    Not everything dangerous is bad.

From the moment Angelina laid eyes on him, she fell into a fantasy. Mysterious, foreign, gorgeous, Haithem offered her what she needed most—a chance to feel again.

But Haithem is much more than he appears to be. He lives in a world of danger where everything comes at a price.

For Angelina, that price is her future.

He’s ensured the life she’s left behind is in tatters. Made her family believe she’s dead. He talks about protecting her, about keeping her safe, but she can’t distinguish his truth from his lies. She can’t separate her pleasure from his betrayal.

Haithem warned her. He told her he’d make her heart race, her body come alive, and her most primal needs rush to the surface. His for the taking.

He didn’t say she’d come to love the devil who’s destroying her, even as he keeps her prisoner.

  • Checkmate, My Lord

Checkmate, My Lord by Tracey Devlyn

Checkmate, My Lord by Tracey Devlyn is $1.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This historical romance has a spy hero and a widow/single-parent heroine who happen to be neighbors. Readers loved the suspense/thriller aspects to the romance, though some found the book to be a bit long.

A desperate mother falls in love with the spymaster she’s sent to betray.

Spymaster Sebastian Danvers, Lord Somerton, has spent the last decade protecting England’s shores against a French invasion. Known for his cold logic and ability to sacrifice anything for the greater good, few can outwit him, and even fewer dare challenge him. Until now.

After being exiled to his country estate, Sebastian is surprised when his beautiful, no-nonsense neighbor turns her seductive wiles on him. But years of intrigue have left him wondering why a respectable widow would risk scandal for a few nights in his bed. Sebastian takes his time unraveling the widow’s secrets, for he quickly realizes she might be the one sacrifice he is unwilling to make.

Living a quiet existence at Winter’s Hollow, Catherine Ashcroft spends her days doing little more than caring for her precocious six-year-old daughter and negotiating her neighbors’ various complaints against their absentee landowner, the enigmatic Earl of Somerton. But, all her boredom comes to a searing halt after learning her newly returned neighbor might have had something to do with her husband’s murder.

Catherine’s orderly existence soon upends and she now finds herself in a desperate bid to save her daughter’s life. But she must betray the earl to do so, even though she no longer suspects him of foul play. Lauren succumbs to the the earl’s passionate kisses and recognizes the same loneliness she has felt for years lurking in his hard, crystalline eyes. As her lover’s enemies close in, will Catherine be able to save both her beloved daughter and the handsome spy who has stolen her heart?

  • Flash Fire

    Flash Fire by Dana Marton

Flash Fire by Dana Marton is 99c! This romantic suspense just won a RITA® and though we didn’t receive a review for it during the RITA®Reader Challenge, the Goodreads reviews were mostly positive. However, some didn’t feel the chemistry between the hero and heroine. It has an astounding 4.3-star rating on Goodreads.

A brand new, gripping novel of romantic suspense from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Dana Marton.

When an American teenager disappears abroad, Clara Roberts, a by-the-book investigator on a secret mission, joins forces with Light Walker, an ex-SEAL turned lawless mercenary, to save her. The sparks they generate—and the trouble they stir up—threaten to set the jungle ablaze.

Nothing is what it seems in this fast-paced romantic thriller. As attraction grows into love, looming danger turns into all-out war, and the whole region explodes around them. Clara and Walker must hold on to each other and race against time to survive.

Okay um… no offense but the dynamic as depicted by the description of “Did I Warn You” sounds straight up abusive.

  3. SusanK says:

The Undoing by Shelly Laurenston is on sale for $2.99 and Magnate by Joanna Shupe is $1.99!

  5. Katie Lynn says:

I really enjoyed In the Middle of Somewhere, and the second book in the series. The third comes out on Tuesday, which is probably why this one on sale.

For the Love of the Duke by Christi Caldwell is free right now. I finished it yesterday, and really enjoyed it.

  6. Steffi says:

In the Middle of Somewhere sounds a lot like someone took RONAN Lynch (tattoed, snarky, with bits of self-loathing) and Adam PARRISH (works as a mechanic to put himself through a posh private school)from Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle, wrote a fanfiction and then pulled an EL James and turned it into a novel … particularly since Ronan and Adam are one of the main couples in the books.

  7. Peggy says:

Thanks @Katie Lynn for the info on the release of #3 In The MIddle of Somewhere series! I too really enjoyed books 1 & 2. (Also thanks for the scoop on For the Love of the Duke!)

  8. Lora says:

I loved Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell! Thanks @DrewBird, I can recommend the sale to a pal who’s a newbie to Rowell (I made her start with E&P because all the feels)

  9. KateB says:

Fangirl and A Darker Shade of Magic are SO GOOD. So good!

  10. Ariadna says:

I’ve read both In the Middle of Somewhere and Out of Nowhere. Imo, the first book would’ve benefited from slightly tighter editing.

If I had to choose, my fave book in the series is Out of Nowhere because I’m all heart-eyes for the MCs. The third book (which is indeed dropping this Tuesday) sounds like it’ll be lighter fare.

@Steffi aside from the names, I’d say that the MCs from In the Middle of Nowhere are the least fanficc-y protags I’ve come across in a debit novel. Especially considering that they’re called Rex and Daniel. But, YMMV, I guess…

  11. Steffi says:

@Ariadna: It just reads to me like someone wrote an AU for those characters, because the principal traits/setups are so much alike, and then decided to turn it into a novel. I’d have to go too much into detail about Stiefvater’s novels now, but the similarities seem more than coincidence to me. (Even the word “Rex” has an important meaning in the series.) Particularly since the author’s name reads like a mash-up of the original character names.

That said, Stiefvater’s books are YA urban fantasy and nothing short of amazing, particularly the way she writes characters. *IF* In the Middle of Somewhere started out as fanfiction as I assume — the fandom for these two characters is huge — and the author worked with what Stiefvater gave him, it wouldn’t be surprising to me that the MCs don’t read like typical romance heroes.

At the end of the day, that’s just my suspicion though, and I could be doing the author wrong 🙂

  12. Ariadna says:

@Steffi I guarantee you Roan’s series isn’t fic with the serial numbers filed off or has anything to do with TRC. Like, at all. Although you might find the similarities (including the author’s name) so striking, it’s just one of those things. 🙂
