  • Sabriel

    Sabriel by Garth Nix

RECOMMENDED: Sabriel by Garth Nix is $1.99! Many of you were talking about the continuation of this series in a previous Hide Your Wallet post. For those who want to jump on the awesome train or want to convince a friend/family to jump on with you, the first book in the Abhorsen series can be snagged for less than $2! This young adult fantasy novel involves a girl, magic, a boarding school, and a quest to find her missing father. Some recent readers of the series found the material a little dated, but they seem to be in the minority as the book is closing in on 100,000 ratings on GR with a 4.1-star rating overall.

Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny…

  • Thrown

    Thrown by Colette Auclair

Thrown by Colette Auclair is 99c! This is a contemporary romance between a horse trainer and a widowed actor with children. Though the description calls the book “light-hearted,” some readers found the romance to be rather emotional. Just a warning! It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

In this lighthearted and sexy romance, a young woman must choose between winning a competition—and the man who has won her heart.

Professional horse trainer Amanda Vogel dreams of riding jumpers in the Olympics, but after seeing her best friend die in a riding accident, she’s so traumatized she can’t compete. Broke and desperate, she takes a summer job in Aspen teaching some big-shot widowed movie star’s spoiled daughters to ride—and braces herself for three miserable months. But the movie star is funny, down-to-earth, and gorgeous—and his spoiled daughters are just desperate for a mother figure. By Labor Day, she has to choose between capturing a gold medal…and the man who has captured her heart.

  • Broken Resolutions

    Broken Resolutions by Olivia Dade

Broken Resolutions by Olivia Dade is 99c! This is the first book in the Lovestruck Librarians series and the rest are also on sale for 99c each. Readers thought the book was missing a lot of the romance, while others loved the pairing of a shy librarian and a reclusive author. Have you read this one?

    LOVE BETWEEN THE LINES

Romance has never had a happy ending for librarian Penny Callahan, who could write the book on cheating, heartbreaking liars. So she’s made a resolution: no men for the next twelve months. If she can just get through the library’s New Year’s Eve singles night, she can return home to her pajamas and a good book. But when she finds herself checking out a hot hunk with an irresistible smile, an evening in the stacks becomes a lot more tempting…

Reclusive author Jack Williamson never should have trusted his mother. Even though he’s trying to avoid being recognized, she guilts him into attending a dating meet-and-greet—where an adorable librarian makes him question his lonely lifestyle. Is this just a fleeting, flirty scene? Or could love be the next chapter for them both?

  • A Taste of Heaven

A Taste of Heaven by Penny Watson

A Taste of Heaven by Penny Watson is 99c! This cover is making me so hungry. This is a contemporary romance with an older hero and heroine (late 40s) and a food competition show. Readers loved the heroine and her relationship with the grumpy Scottish chef hero. However, some readers felt the action of the book happened a little too quickly. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads

    “Create one perfect bite.”

Good little widow Sophia Brown always follows the rules. When the producer of a cooking competition requests an amuse-bouche, the chefs stick with proteins. Sauces. A savory concoction. She has only one shot to impress the judges on A Taste of Heaven. But in a moment of defiance, she creates an extraordinary dessert, one that combines both the bitter and the sweet, just like her own life.

    That one bite changes everything.

After a year grieving for her dead husband, forty-seven-year-old Sophia is finally ready to break out of her shell. Unfortunately, there is a large, angry obstacle standing in her way. Scottish chef Elliott Adamson has a chip on his shoulder the size of Loch Ness, and he’s blocking her path to victory.

Spurred by her daughters, she embarks on a poignant adventure that takes her from the wildflower fields of Vermont to the wind-swept vista of North Berwick, Scotland. Fear, courage, and inspiration from unlikely places will mark this journey, and Sophia is determined to persevere until the very end.

I think your site previously recommended author Penny Watson and her books – anywho, this was great and definitely a steal at .99 – especially for readers who aren’t ‘in the first blush of youth’ 🙂

Plus, the food descriptions were super!

I’m giving Penny Watson a try, maybe because I’m hungry. 🙂

I highly recommend the Abhorsen series by Garth Nix. Just waiting on a good coupon to buy the new one in the series.

@Colette: I think I picked up the Abhorsen books based on an SBTB discussion, but I had trouble getting into it. I didn’t exactly DNF Sabriel, more like I set it aside temporarily with the intention of coming back to it a later date. Your comment encourages me that it’s worth a revisit. Thx.

  5. I enjoyed A Taste of Heaven for the most part, but the ending strained my credulity a bit. Also, VAGUE SPOILERS the hero starts out as an asshat and slowly stops being one but suffers a major relapse late in the book. It didn’t work for me; it threw off the pacing and felt shoehorned in to prolong the tension. END SPOILERS Overall, it’s a very gentle book and good for unwinding after a stressful day. And the food porn is intense.

Forbidden by Beverly Jenkins is $1.99 everywhere but B&N. On Sunday, after going to a bag sale at a used bookstore, that my tbr pile was so out of control that I would only buy books on my top tier wish list that were $1.99 or under. Since then two went on sale for .99 and two for $1.99. Sigh,

I read “A Taste of Heaven” in one sitting last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes there was some serious suspension of disbelief required but (I don’t think this is a spoiler) the primary characters are at major crossroads with no unalterable commitments – that can make people fearless – as can being nearly 50. 🙂
