Tied Score
Author: Elia Winters
Released: August 15, 2016 by Pocket Star
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Erotica/Erotic Romance, Romance
Series: Slices of Pi #2Geeky meets kinky in this second too-hot-to-handle novel in the Slices of Pi series by RITA-nominated author Elia Winters, which follows the erotic adventures of the employees at PI Games, a gaming company based out of sultry Florida.
Iris Parker never planned on ending up in HR because, let’s face it: HR isn’t the most glamorous position in the world. She took a comfortable job and always planned on leaving when something better came along, but before she knows it, she’s thirty and the HR director for PI Games. Even though she likes her coworkers, there’s no excitement in the job for her, and Iris is worried that she’ll lose her spark. Luckily, Iris’s romantic life provides some thrills—living the confirmed bachelor life, when she wants her bed warm, she can find company, and in her sights at the moment is the cute pastry chef at her favorite bakery.
Owen Hobbs has noticed the gorgeous businesswoman making eyes at him when she comes in for coffee and sweets, but he’s not the type of guy who dates much anymore. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t take long in his sporadic dating history to learn that most women aren’t interested in taking charge in bed, which is what he really craves. Working early mornings at the bakery keeps him from the nightlife where he might meet someone who can fulfill his needs, so he’s resigned himself to fantasies and pretty much given up on the dating scene altogether. But when Iris’s advances become too much to resist, Owen finds himself revealing his desire to be sexually dominated…the only question is, is she the right woman for the job?
Amanda says: The hero is a pastry chef and a submissive. Yes, you read that right!

Author: Kris Ripper
Released: August 22, 2016 by Riptide Publishing
Genre: Contemporary Romance, LGBTQIA, Romance
Series: Queers of La Vista #2Jaq Cummings is a high school teacher who really wants a committed relationship—as long as it doesn’t keep her out late on school nights or interrupt Sunday mass with her dad. She is absolutely not about to fall for the hot-mess divorcée she hooks up with even if said hot mess pushes all her buttons. Jaq’s white knight days are over.
But one hookup with Hannah becomes two, then coffee, then more incredibly hot sex. And unlike most of Jaq’s exes, Hannah’s not looking for someone to come on strong. In fact, Hannah comes on plenty strong enough for both of them. But she’s just out of a disastrous marriage, she’s in the process of moving across the state, and Jaq can’t take a chance on yet another relationship where she defaults to being a caregiver instead of a partner.
Just when Jaq decides her relationship with Hannah is far too precarious, a crisis with a student reminds her of her priorities and makes it clear that sometimes, you have to take big risks to get what you really want.
Sarah says: One of the main conflicts in this romance, judging by the cover copy, is that Jaq, who is a teacher, doesn’t want to default in any relationship to a caregiver role – I am intrigued!

We Are Unprepared
Author: Meg Little Reilly
Released: August 30, 2016 by MIRA
Genre: Literary Fiction, Mystery/ThrillerWe Are Unprepared is a novel about the next big storm, the one that changes our relationship to nature and each other…the superstorm that threatens to destroy a marriage, a rural Vermont town and the Eastern Seaboard when it hits. But the destruction begins months earlier, when fear infects people’s lives and spreads like a plague.
Ash and Pia’s move from Brooklyn to the bucolic hills of Vermont was supposed to be a fresh start—a picturesque farmhouse, mindful lifestyle, maybe even children. But just three months in, news breaks of a devastating superstorm expected in the coming months. Fear of the impending disaster divides their tight-knit rural town and exposes the chasms in Ash and Pia’s marriage. Ash seeks common ground with those who believe in working together for the common good. Pia teams up with “preppers” who want to go off the grid and war with the rest of the locals over whom to trust and how to protect themselves. Where Isole had once been a town of old farm families, yuppie transplants and beloved rednecks, they divide into paranoid preppers, religious fanatics and government tools.
We Are Unprepared is an emotional journey, a terrifying glimpse into the human, environmental and cultural costs of our changing earth. But hope awaits on the other side.
Elyse says: This psychological thriller about prepping and impending disaster is right up my alley.

Rhys Bowen’s Crowned and Dangerous (Georgianna Rannoch) comes out this month, and Seanan McGuire has a novella featuring Quentin.
Faith Hunter has a new paranormal coming out tomorrow. It is related to her Jane Yellowrock series.
I’m excited to read The Highlander by Kerrigan Byrne tomorrow. Loved the first two in the series.
I’ve had A Torch Against the Night preordered since April.
I was lucky to read an ARC of Just What I Needed by Lorelei James and it was amazing! The hero is to super sexy and hot and I loved the plot.
I’ve gone on record elsewhere and I’ll do it here. I am never going to read another book by Lisa Renee Jones again because In My Opinion, for whatever it is worth, she cheated her readers with that series about the Master and the journals. It went on and on and on and on far past the time I had figured out whodunit, far past the time her characters ceased to be anything but cardboard cutouts. No story ended, they just stopped. Even when the original plot had more or less resolved, the story didn’t end so much as it segued into a spin-off series. In My Opinion, she is bilking her readers.
I use caps to emphasize that I am speaking only for me, myself, and I. I have no idea what her motives are, I can only say what it feels like to me. I feel as if my trust in this author to deliver an entertaining story has been violated.
^^ Re the above, I’ve had the Hunter and McGuire books on preorder for months, so yay. I think I’m going to mess with my TBR list and buck those two to the top. But I’ve pretty much ditched both of Rhys Bowen’s series due to a combination of same old, same old and high prices.
I’m putting We Are Unprepared on my wish list so I can check out some ratings once other readers have tested the waters. It seems like it could be either pretty good or pretty awful. I don’t know how you can know about a superstorm months in advance, and the characters are described as broad stereotypes. Still, I’m curious. . .
I’m really excited for It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover and Close to You by Kristen Proby. Both have been preordered for quite some time.
Amazon sent me a $3 off coupon just in time to one click Burn Down The Night. Once again Molly O’Keefe has me reading something with elements I am totally was not interested in: criminal hero, MC club and young adult. She is amazing!!
And how sweet, Mary Robinette Kowal got me something for my birthday!
I can’t think of anything on my wishlist for this month except Star Trek #60 from IDW, and the print edition of Fresh Romance from ONI Press.
I’m excited about…
The new Chicago Stars
The New Lady Georgie (#10) (Crowned and Dangerous) by Rhys Bowen
and
Love on Her Terms by Jennifer Lohmann
The heroine writes graphic novels!
DonnaMarie, isn’t it lovely when your favorite authors do that? New Kowal and new Maclean makes for a very happy birthday.
Oh! Oh! There’s a new Melissa Brayden out this month!
“First Position” – F/F romance (about ballet!!!) – Aug 16
*a former Kate
I am so excited about the new Susan Elizabeth Phillips book! I am actually going to drive 2 1/2 hours to the signing on the Sunday before it’s released. Unfortunately for me that week is turning into hell week and I probably won’t be able to read it until the following Friday 🙁
