  • Midnight’s Kiss

    Midnight’s Kiss by Thea Harrison

RECOMMENDED: Midnight’s Kiss by Thea Harrison is $2.99! This book is currently nominated for a RITA® in the Paranormal Romance category and received favorable reviews during our RITA® Reader Challenge.

    DonnaMarie gave it an A:

There’s plenty of action between escaping and revenging and cleaning house. It moves along logically and nicely paced. You aren’t going to find yourself wondering why someone wanders off by themselves or doesn’t stay put when told to stay put. It’s pretty entertaining, but the real reason to read this is the relationship journey. I probably won’t articulate this as well as a more analytical thinker. The exploration of forgiveness and moving on after trust is betrayed is deeply effecting.

    PamG gave it a B+:

On its own, this novel isn’t the most amazingly unique example of the paranormal romance sub-genre, but it is part of a pretty dynamic series. The writing is solid; characterization, strong–especially Melly’s–and world-building, consistent and interesting. A reader new to the series could easily follow the plot, might well enjoy it, but might not get what the hoopla is about. I do reread my favorite books and series, so I expect to reread this one at some point. Hence the B+. However, there was no Good Book Noise™ wafting up from the old recliner as I turned the last page, so Midnight’s Kiss fell a little short of an A. On the other hand, I was smiling.

In the latest Novel of the Elder Races, two souls who have long buried their passions are about to be consumed…

Ever since their scorching affair ended years ago, Julian, the Nightkind King, and Melisande, daughter of the Light Fae Queen, have tried to put the past behind them—and distance between them. But when a war breaks out between Julian and Justine, a powerful Vampyre of the Nightkind council, they find themselves thrown together under treacherous circumstances…

Kidnapped as leverage against Julian, Melly is convinced that her former lover won’t be rushing to her rescue. But when Julian gives himself up to save her, they both end up Justine’s captives. Armed only with their wits and their anger, Melly and Julian must work together to escape. But will they be able to ignore their complicated history, or will the fiery passion that once burned them blaze again?

  • The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith is $2.99 at select vendors! Carrie reviewed this book last summer and gave it a B-:

This book was not the best book I’ve every read, but I had a lot of fun with it.  It was like those snack size bags of potato chips – yummy, quick, not super-deep, but fun.  I especially enjoyed Hadley’s relationship with her parents.  The stuff about her dad was truly emotionally powerful.  The romance with Oliver was less powerful, but I believe that was intentional.  It’s not the focus of the book.

Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything?

Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan’s life. Having missed her flight, she’s stuck at JFK airport and late to her father’s second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon-to-be stepmother Hadley’s never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport’s cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he’s British, and he’s sitting in her row.

A long night on the plane passes in the blink of an eye, and Hadley and Oliver lose track of each other in the airport chaos upon arrival. Can fate intervene to bring them together once more?

Quirks of timing play out in this romantic and cinematic novel about family connections, second chances, and first loves. Set over a twenty-four-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver’s story will make you believe that true love finds you when you’re least expecting it.

  • Saint and Scholar

Saint and Scholar by Holley Trent

Saint and Scholar by Holley Trent is 99c at most vendors and $1.99 at Barnes & Noble! Trent was recommended on a podcast episode with Rebekah Weatherspoon, and features a hint of a taboo relationship (the heroine is the hero’s former student). Some readers found the heroine to be a little immature, while many loved the hero. Be warned that the book is a little on the shorter side and despite the cover, it’s more of a contemporary romance than erotica.

He teaches about the Irish past. She worries about their Irish future.

Grant Fennell seems to lack the luck of the Irish. He’s had his nose broken three times, his dissertation advisor was a useless lump, he’s thirty-one and finishing his PhD, and he can’t find a teaching position in the US. Then he accepts a job in his native Ireland on the same day the stunning former student he’s been intrigued by for nearly eight years shows a shred of interest. Finally, he catches a break: Carla Gill needs his expertise.

Carla is at a dead end on her late Irish-American father’s family tree project. Who better to assist than an expert on Irish history? Especially one with the face of an Adonis and a brogue that makes her want to shed her clothes. She’ll be his girlfriend, all right, in spite of her overprotective brothers and nay-saying friend.

But when Carla accompanies Grant to Ireland to conduct her research, he makes it clear he wants to put her on the fast track to matrimony. The professor wants to teach her something about “happily ever after.” Does she really want her happy ending to start right now?

  • Jim Henson: The Biography

Jim Henson: The Biography by Brian Jay Jones

Jim Henson: The Biography by Brian Jay Jones is $1.99! I know the Bitchery has many Dark Crystal and Labyrinth lovers, so I thought this biography might be of interest to some of you. Some readers felt that the biography carried some bias, but others said they had such a feeling of nostalgia while reading. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

For the first time ever—a comprehensive biography of one of the twentieth century’s most innovative creative artists: the incomparable, irreplaceable Jim Henson.

He was a gentle dreamer whose genial bearded visage was recognized around the world, but most people got to know him only through the iconic characters born of his fertile imagination: Kermit the Frog, Bert and Ernie, Miss Piggy, Big Bird. The Muppets made Jim Henson a household name, but they were just part of his remarkable story.

This extraordinary biography—written with the generous cooperation of the Henson family—covers the full arc of Henson’s all-too-brief life: from his childhood in Leland, Mississippi, through the years of burgeoning fame in America, to the decade of international celebrity that preceded his untimely death at age fifty-three. Drawing on hundreds of hours of new interviews with Henson’s family, friends, and closest collaborators, as well as unprecedented access to private family and company archives, Brian Jay Jones explores the creation of the Muppets, Henson’s contributions to Sesame Street andSaturday Night Live, and his nearly ten-year campaign to bringThe Muppet Show to television. Jones provides the imaginative context for Henson’s non-Muppet projects, including the richly imagined worlds of The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth—as well as fascinating misfires like Henson’s dream of opening an inflatable psychedelic nightclub.

An uncommonly intimate portrait, Jim Henson captures all the facets of this American original: the master craftsman who revolutionized the presentation of puppets on television, the savvy businessman whose dealmaking prowess won him a reputation as “the new Walt Disney,” and the creative team leader whose collaborative ethos earned him the undying loyalty of everyone who worked for him. Here also is insight into Henson’s intensely private personal life: his Christian Science upbringing, his love of fast cars and expensive art, and his weakness for women. Though an optimist by nature, Henson was haunted by the notion that he would not have time to do all the things he wanted to do in life—a fear that his heartbreaking final hours would prove all too well founded.

An up-close look at the charmed life of a legend, Jim Henson gives the full measure to a man whose joyful genius transcended age, language, geography, and culture—and continues to beguile audiences worldwide.

  1. Lisa says:

Hensen was gone by then, but his Jim Hensen Productions was the genesis of ‘Farscape’. Which remains the greatest epic Sci-fi romance ever in my book. The Hensen company creations like Rygel and Pilot became solid characters in their own right, but the romance of John and Aeryn will always be one of my favorite OTPs.

And, of course, gotta love The Muppets.

  2. Lostshadows says:

My brother got an ARC of the Hensen bio and loved it.

I still hold out hope that the last two seasons of The Muppet Show will come out on DVD. I loved that show.

  3. Lostshadows says:

    Ack! Henson. Damn you autocorrect!

  4. Neasa says:

Grant Fennell? His native Ireland? Nope – sorry no. This is such an un-Irish name. I’ve never met or even heard of an Irish man with either of these names. Authors please do some research – we’ve got plenty of interesting Irish names, use them.

  5. Cynthia Sax says:

I was curious, Neasa, so I looked it up (because I’m geeky that way).

Yep, Grant didn’t hit the top 200 most popular boys names in Ireland in 2014.

And Fennell didn’t hit the top 100 list for surnames

There could be a great explanation for his name in the book, however. Or it could be a nod to an Irish man the writer knows (I’ve done that).

  6. SQ says:

I wonder if there are actual statistics in that book – if so, I’m in. 🙂

  7. Kay says:

I feel like I’m the only one who haaated Midnight’s Kiss. I rage-read that entire book. I really enjoyed a lot of the other books in the series, so I was surprised by how much this book aggravated me.
