Shelly Laurenston, Plus Recommended Historical Romances!

  • The Unleashing

    The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston

RECOMMENDED: The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston is $1.99! Yeah, you’re reading that right. If you were at RT, I squeed about this so hard, so thanks to everyone who told us about this sale. And I did a little drive by squee during a review for the second book, The Undoing:

Feared Viking blacksmith (of sorts) in the Raven clan has a massive crush on a former Marine who is reborn as a Crow. (Bonus: Ravens giving him shit about his crush, and his ability to admit easily that he really likes her: ALL the thumbs, all of them up.)

    WINGING IT

Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn’t for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die.

In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig “Vig” Rundstöm has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life—but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies: cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the Marines.

But Vig can’t give up on someone as special as Kera. With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for L.A., survival will depend on combining their strengths: Kera’s discipline, Vig’s loyalty… and the Crows’ sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.

  • The Mane Event

The Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston

RECOMMENDED: The Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston is $1.99 at most vendors. This is book 1 in her Pride series, and is a terrific, campy blend of ferocious women, shape shifters, alpha males, and paranormal fun. This book is also two stories in one. I really likes Laurenston’s voice, and find her shifter stories to be a great time when she reads them. They’re very sexy, with a lot of naked time, and a silly sense of humor. Plus some badass heroines!

Mace Llewellyn. Brendon Shaw. Two tall, gorgeous, sexy alpha heroes who are 100% male―with a little something extra. Lion-shifters, to be exact, who can unleash every woman’s animal side and still look good―make that spectacular―in a suit… and even better out of it…

NYPD cop Desiree “Dez” MacDermot knows she’s changed a lot since she palled around with her childhood buddy, Mace. But it’s fair to say that Mace has changed even more. It isn’t just those too-sexy gold eyes, or the six-four, built-like-a-Navy Seal body. It’s something in the way he sniffs her neck and purrs, making her entire body tingle…

Meanwhile, for Tennessean Ronnie Lee Reed, New York City is the place where any girl―even one who runs with a Pack―can redefine herself. First order of business: find a mate, settle down, and stop using men for sex. Even big, gorgeous, lion shifter men like Brendon Shaw. But she needn’t worry, because now that Brendon’s set his sights on her, the predator in him is ready to pounce and never let go…

  • Lord of Scoundrels

Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase

RECOMMENDED: Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase is $1.99! This is a classic and much-loved historical romance. It has a 4.1-star average, and is one of the most frequently recommended historical romances, especially for those new to the romance genre. If you haven’t tried it, treat yourself.

They call him many names, but Angelic isn’t one of them . . .

Sebastian Ballister, the notorious Marquess of Dain, is big, bad, and dangerous to know. No respectable woman would have anything to do with the “Bane and Blight of the Ballisters”—and he wants nothing to do with respectable women. He’s determined to continue doing what he does best—sin and sin again—and all that’s going swimmingly, thank you . . . until the day a shop door opens and she walks in.

She’s too intelligent to fall for the worst man in the world . . .

Jessica Trent is a determined young woman, and she’s going to drag her imbecile brother off the road to ruin, no matter what it takes. If saving him—and with him, her family and future—means taking on the devil himself, she won’t back down. The trouble is, the devil in question is so shockingly irresistible, and the person who needs the most saving is—herself!

  • Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress

Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress by Theresa Romain

RECOMMENDED: Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress by Theresa Roman is 99c! Redheadedgirl reviewed the book and gave it an A:

I really enjoyed everything about this book. The characters were fascinating and not the standard duke (I don’t have anything against the standard duke, mind, but I like reading about the 99%, too). I loved Joss’ identity issues, and the setting made me so happy. I also really liked that there wasn’t an evil villain in the background twirling his mustache and cackling. This was a delight.

This book is also nominated for a RITA and guest reviewer, LauraL, gave it an A- for our RITA® Reader Challenge:

I think almost everyone has felt to be the outsider at some point in their lives and I think everyone would love a second chance. In Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress, Theresa Romain brings together two outsiders who live in the shadows of the glittering ton during the Regency and gives them the opportunity for second chances.

    One good proposition deserves another…

Heiress Augusta Meredith can’t help herself—she stirs up gossip wherever she goes. A stranger to Bath society, she pretends to be a charming young widow, until sardonic, darkly handsome Joss Everett arrives from London and uncovers her charade.

Augusta persuades Joss to keep her secret in exchange for a secret of his own. Weaving their way through the treacherous pitfalls of a polite world only too eager to expose and condemn them, they begin to see that being true to themselves is not so bad…as long as they’re true to each other…

  • The Rogue Not Taken

The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean

    The sales today are AWESOME!

The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean is $2.99 right now. This is book 1 in the Scandal & Scoundrel series, and book 2, A Scot in the Dark, comes out 30 August 2016. Elyse reviewed this book and gave it an A, saying,

Let me start by saying that The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean is my favorite book of hers to date. If you’ve read her, or know me, then you know that I just said a thing.

I mean, there is a scene in this book where the hero sensually rubs honey on the heroine’s body while she dreamily describes the bookstore she’ll own one day.

    Damn.

If you’ve been waiting for this book to go on sale, then today is a very good day!

    Lady Sophie’s Society Splash

When Sophie, the least interesting of the Talbot sisters, lands her philandering brother-in-law backside-first in a goldfish pond in front of all society, she becomes the target of very public aristocratic scorn. Her only choice is to flee London, vowing to start a new life far from the aristocracy. Unfortunately, the carriage in which she stows away isn’t saving her from ruin . . . it’s filled with it.

    Rogue’s Reign of Ravishment!

Kingscote, “King,” the Marquess of Eversley, has never met a woman he couldn’t charm, resulting in a reputation far worse than the truth, a general sense that he’s more pretty face than proper gentleman, and an irate summons home to the Scottish border. When King discovers stowaway Sophie, however, the journey becomes anything but boring.

    War? Or More?

He thinks she’s trying to trick him into marriage. She wouldn’t have him if he were the last man on earth. But carriages bring close quarters, dark secrets, and unbearable temptation, making opposites altogether too attractive . . .

  1. Ren Benton says:

I’m going to grab that Sarah MacLean and grumble the whole time I’m reading it (and likely loving it) that I have yet to see the fourth Rule of Scoundrels book on sale.

On the other hand, I’ve had such bad luck with books lately, I’d be better off splurging $7 on one I have a reasonable chance of enjoying versus another three I’ll either rage-quit or rage-finish, so I think I’ll grab that, too.

  2. Jennifer says:

I tried to listen to The Unleashing on audiobook and only made it through about 30% before I stopped. It made me crazy. I wonder if I try the ebook it will be any better. Thoughts?

  3. CelineB says:

The Heart of It All, a novella by Molly O’Keefe, is free right now on Amazon and Kobo (.99 B&N, couldn’t find it on iBooks).

  4. CelineB says:

Also The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata is .99 at Amazon at least. I’ve a lot of good things about it.

  5. bnbsrose says:

@Jennifer, absolutely go for it. The Crows are every kind of fabulous bawdy fun.

@CelineB, thanks for the heads up. I’ve been hearing great things, but haven’t had good luck with new to me authors lately. .99 is the perfect RTR ratio for me.

  6. I second @CelineB’s recommendation of The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. I bought it recently (for $3.99, I might add) and really enjoyed it. I loved the grumpy hero and the slow-burning romance, and I really appreciated the heroine’s genuine, believable friendships with both male and female characters. I felt like the relationship between the hero and heroine was so well-developed that by the end of the book I believed 100% in their HEA. Also, it’s 673 pages long, so you’re getting a lot of entertainment for your $.99.

  7. Dora says:

I thought The Unleashing was just okay. Loved the characters in concept and some of the mythology, but personally, the writing style was a total miss. That’s not a shot at anyone who enjoyed it, just that for my own tastes, it was way too spartan in places, and rushed in others. I never felt like the characters were real people I connected with, just popular tropes spouting quips.

By contrast, I DO recommend The Mane Event. It felt a little rushed and as if certain scenes or characters could be fleshed out, but I really enjoyed how strong and developed the heroine was (the whole series is pretty good), the different types of shifters and how varied their personalities were, and ALL of the supporting cast is in general just excellent, which is pretty rare. (I wasn’t wild about the hero, but I didn’t dislike him either. He was just sort of there. Filler, but inoffensive filler.) The whole cop storyline is kind of awkwardly shunted to the side and then all crammed in at the end, and the book might have been stronger without it, but it’s still a really great, fun, likable series.

  8. LORD OF SCOUNDRELS is the greatest historical romance ever written. Lord Dain has ruined me for everyone else, too.

  9. LovelloftheWolves says:

@Jennifer – as an alternate perspective to bnbsrose – I tried to read it. I think I made it 3 chapters in? The writing drove me NUTS. There’s very little description of everything (environment, characters, props), all the various female characters blend into a single mass of Angry Cursing Shrill Women (I could never tell who was talking or what they looked like – the author swapped out the “sisterhood” characters so fast I got whiplash), and the scene transitions occur with jarring abruptness. Maybe the underlying story is entertaining? Maybe? But I found it to be poorly written, and that took me straight out of the story.

  10. Kim S. says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who wasn’t into The Unleashing! I can totally see why people would like it, and I don’t think it’s a bad book, but I just couldn’t get into the writing style and felt weirdly guilty about that.

  11. Yaya says:

I also listened to The Unleashing and was disappointed. I would maybe be willing to continue the series with a different narrator.

  12. Lizzy says:

And counterpoint on LoS, I thought it was a very average historical. I gave away my copy. Not bad, worth the sale price but not anything that I loved, either. Maybe because I was so hyped and I’m not sure there’s much that can live up to that much squee.

  13. Bea says:

I loved Lord of Scoundrels when I read it for the first time and loved it even more when I listened to the audiobooks. It’s just $2.99 with whispersync. Highly recommended!

  14. Lauren says:

I was unimpressed with Lord of Scoundrels. I had to really push myself to even finish it and came away not really much liking either the hero or heroine. But I’m clearly in the minority on this.

  15. LMG says:

Hey everyone–check your Amazon gift card balance today. The class action lawsuit claims for ebooks came in–I got $31.40! What did you get?

  16. Jennifer says:

Thank you, everyone! I really thought I was insane because I could not continue listening to The Unleashing.

@LovelloftheWolves, you have perfectly articulated my experience and why I almost had to purchase a new smart phone. I was frustrated and took it out on my phone.

  17. Theresa says:

@RenBenton, Hold off on the last Rule of Scoundrels book, I was very disappointed… But I still love Sarah MacLean and will buy The Rogue not Taken.

  18. lindleepw says:

@LMG Thanks for the heads up! I have $153.59!!

  19. Ellie says:

Thanks for the heads up on the Molly O’Keefe freebie!- but if y’all are trying to search amazon, it’s actually called The Heart of It. No “all” in the title.

  20. Michelle says:

Woohoo! I have $93 Amazon credit!!! What oh what shall I buy?

    @lindleepw- yay!!

  21. I “discovered” Shelly Laurenston through your podcast recently. I’ve only read one book, the first in the Crows series, but Lord was it good! I’m hooked now. All your fault. 🙂

  22. Sunny says:

There are some good ones on sale right now, but I gotta give some HUGE love to The Rogue Not Taken. I had only read one or two of Sarah Maclean’s books before – I actively disliked one and thought the other was fine – but decided to try Rogue on the strength of Elyse’s review. I absolutely adored it. It has everything — witty banter, changing scenery, Sophie dressing like a footman, you name it. It is batty and nuts in the absolute best way. I had a minor complaint or two about Eversley’s dad “stuff” and a rather silly plot point at the end, but these were small things. I can’t wait for the next book in the Scandal and Scoundrel series.

I only got $14.78 in Amazon credit. You all are putting me to shame.
