Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Medieval Heroine Brought Back to Life

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

This HaBO request is from Leslie, who wants to find a medieval historical romance:

I’ve been looking for a book I read in the early to mid-1990s, sometime before 1994 or 1995. It was sort of a semi-mystical medieval, featuring Taliesin as a bit character.

As I recall the plot, the heroine was the daughter of a Welsh or Cornish lord, and was married off to a Norman for…reasons. They got on all right and had a baby, and then the baby died and they started hating each other. He ran off to Wales or wherever to hang out with her brothers, and they were, like, “bro, women are crazy,” with typical 1980s/early 1990s misogynist wisdom, and he was like, “hmm, maybe I still like her.”

And then she came along to reconcile with him, but was shot with an arrow (?) outside the castle where he was hiding out, and he thought she died. Taliesin brings her back from the dead, or something, I think. Cue even more drama until they were finally reunited.

Does this crazypants sound familiar to anyone else?

Anyone know this book?

  1. Yes! I know this book!
I’m pretty sure you’re looking for Penelope Williamson’s ‘Keeper of the Dream’, which is on my definite keeper shelf. This is such a cool book! Unusual Welsh medieval setting, just a tiny bit of magic, feisty heroine, tough but gorgeous hero, realistic problems, a sprinkling of mid 90’s crazysauce. What’s not to love? I’d go re-read it myself right now, except I have a deadline looming. . . (hence my wasting time / ‘research’ surfing Smart Bitches and reading this HABO). Doh.
    Enjoy!
    All the best,
    Kate

One of my favorite medievals ever! Keeper of the Dream by Penelope Williamson

  4. Leslie says:

Oh my GOD. I was totally convinced that even the SBTB commentariat wouldn’t be able to figure this one out. Thank you!
