  • Mercury Striking

    Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti

Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti is $1.99! This is a dystopian romance and the first in a new series. Readers loved the worldbuilding and thought the heroine had a nice blending of being confident yet vulnerable. However, some said they felt a little lost in all of the action. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

With nothing but rumors to lead her, Lynn Harmony has trekked across a nightmare landscape to find one man—a mysterious, damaged legend who protects the weak and leads the strong. He’s more than muscle and firepower—and in post-plague L.A., he’s her only hope. As the one woman who could cure the disease, Lynn is the single most volatile—and vulnerable—creature in this new and ruthless world. But face to face with Jax Mercury…

Danger has never looked quite so delicious…

  • Wrecked

    Wrecked by Shiloh Walker

Wrecked by Shiloh Walker is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance about two former child stars and was a 2014 DABWAHA finalist. Sarah reviewed this book and gave it a B-:

I was rooting for their relationship to change, and I was rooting for them both. Wrecked is a sweet and sexy story that, despite some repetitive flaws, was charming and fun to read.

In the nineties, Abigale Applegate and Zach Barnes were the most beloved sitcom child stars in the world. Then they grew up and left Hollywood behind…

    Whatever happened to Abigale Applegate?

She’s been wondering the same thing.

With her Hollywood dreams long gone, Abigale now has a nice, neat, uncomplicated life—until the day her perfect fiancé needs to talk. Dumped, a little more than shattered, and totally confused, Abigale turns to Zach, her best friend since forever, to help her pick up the pieces. He does it with a gift—a copy of Wreck This Journal. She can vent her frustrations, and sketch out a new plan. Zach just hopes he’s part of it. Because he’s been in love with Abigale his entire life.

When the journal falls into Zach’s hands, he discovers Abigale wants a new man. And fast. Nothing more than a hot distraction. Zach has a strategy, too. He’s going to be that man. It’s his last chance. Abigale might be out to shake up her life, but Zach’s out to reinvent it. Now, all he has to do is convince Abigale that life can go as planned.

  • Full Fathom Five

Full Fathom Five by Max Gladstone

Full Fathom Five by Max Gladstone is $2.99! If you picked up the first book in the Craft Sequence when it was on sale, this is the third book and can be read as a standalone. While many readers loved the characters in this installment, some didn’t find it as gripping as the first or second books. And if you’re looking to try and complete the series, all of the other current books that are out are available for $4.99 each.

The third novel set in the addictive and compelling fantasy world of Three Parts Dead.

On the island of Kavekana, Kai builds gods to order, then hands them to others to maintain. Her creations aren’t conscious and lack their own wills and voices, but they accept sacrifices, and protect their worshippers from other gods—perfect vehicles for Craftsmen and Craftswomen operating in the divinely controlled Old World. When Kai sees one of her creations dying and tries to save her, she’s grievously injured—then sidelined from the business entirely, her near-suicidal rescue attempt offered up as proof of her instability. But when Kai gets tired of hearing her boss, her coworkers, and her ex-boyfriend call her crazy, and starts digging into the reasons her creations die, she uncovers a conspiracy of silence and fear—which will crush her, if Kai can’t stop it first.

  • A is for Alibi

A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton

A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton is $2.99! My mom was addicted to this series and I remember her collecting each book. She had the first few in paperback, so she would always wait for the paperback editions to come out. God forbid she had one in hardcover and the rest in softcover. These mysteries are huge favorites for some, but others found the books have to too much filler.

When Laurence Fife was murdered, few mourned his passing. A prominent divorce attorney with a reputation for single-minded ruthlessness on behalf of his clients, Fife was also rumored to be a dedicated philanderer. Plenty of people in the picturesque southern California town of Santa Teresa had a reason to want him dead. Including, thought the cops, his young and beautiful wife, Nikki. With motive, access, and opportunity, Nikki was their number-one suspect. The jury thought so, too.

Eight years later and out on parole, Niki Fife hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killed her late husband.

A trail that is eight years cold. A trail that reaches out to enfold a bitter, wealthy, and foul-mouthed old woman and a young boy, born deaf, whose memory cannot be trusted. A trail that leads to a lawyer defensively loyal to a dead partner–and disarmingly attractive to Millhone; to an ex-wife, brave, lucid, lovely–and still angry over Fife’s betrayal of her; to a not-so-young secretary with too high a salary for too few skills–and too many debts left owing: The trail twists to include them all, with Millhone following every turn until it finally twists back on itself and she finds herself face-to-face with a killer cunning enough to get away with murder.

I enjoyed the Sue Grafton books back in the day, back when I had the attention span to read mysteries.

  2. Kareni says:

I read A is for Alibi when it first came out. I think I lost interest/momentum at about the I book. I may have to give them a try again.

  3. Anne says:

Sigh. I would have been much more interested in Mercury Rising if the heroine trekked across the wilderness looking for a savior, and in the end discovered she was herself the savior now, much like the Dread Pirate Roberts. But, journeying through the wilderness to find a big strong man to help you? It’s the 21st century, don’t we have better metaphors to spend our dreams on?

  4. Beth says:

I’ve been reading the Sue Grafton books since my college roommate turned me onto them over twenty years ago. I just love them. Kinsey is such a complex character, and it makes her great! There’s only two left in the series. I’ll be sad to see them end, but Sue Grafton should be so proud of what she put together in this series.

  5. W IS FOR WASTED. Actually, W is for what happened. I don’t actually hate this book, just wasn’t anything at all left in it of the Sue Grafton I used to love. I stopped waiting breathlessly for the next Grafton along about F, gave up buying Grafton about N. Was so tired of the Henry and Rosie filler stuff. And it seemed every time Kinsey found a man attractive, he was the bad guy. But for a long time, even with weak plots and characters, I liked reading Grafton’s language. She had a taste for life that came through. This book was a freebie, and I can certainly see why. Just unreadable trash, and not even good trashy trash. Just boring. Calling Sue Grafton, where did you go?

Lord of Scoundrels is on sale for Kindle for $1.99.

  7. MsCellany says:

I lasted into somewhere around L or so. They started out ok – but all of the little things added up. The filler, the fat shaming, the narrator’s “flaws,” the at times sloppy editing, etc. Add a few plots that didn’t work and I wasn’t going to go through 10+ more books of it.

  8. Maite says:

I’m tempted to buy Full Fathom Five solely on the cover.
And… hell, it’s my cup of tea.
And it’s 10 pm and I have to get up early tomorrow…

I think I’m going to relive Elyse’s post about “just one more page” about now…

  9. Rach says:

@anne: I read Mercury Rising and actually didn’t find it to be as wimpy as you fear. The heroine has an interesting & strong backstory, and doesn’t particularly trust/seek protection from the hero so much as need his help to find someone she wants to assassinate. I liked it!
