Historical Romances with Bodyguards, Cake, & More!

  • The Courtesan Duchess

The Courtesan Duchess by Joanna Shupe

RECOMMENDEDThe Courtesan Duchess by Joanna Shupe is $1.99! This is a historical romance where the couple is married, but estranged. This is also the first book in the Wicked Deceptions series, which Redheadedgirl loved! She mentioned this book on a previous Whatcha Reading post and called the book “delightfully crazy.”

How to seduce an estranged husband—and banish debt!—in four wickedly improper, shockingly pleasurable steps…

    1. Learn the most intimate secrets of London’s leading courtesan.
    2. Pretend to be a courtesan yourself, using the name Juliet Leighton.
    3. Travel to Venice and locate said husband.
    4. Seduce husband, conceive an heir, and voilà, your future is secure!

For Julia, the Duchess of Colton, such a ruse promises to be foolproof. After all, her husband has not bothered to lay eyes on her in eight years, since their hasty wedding day when she was only sixteen. But what begins as a tempestuous flirtation escalates into full-blown passion—and the feeling is mutual. Could the man the Courtesan Duchess married actually turn out to be the love of her life?

  • Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard

Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard by Vanessa Kelly

Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard by Vanessa Kelly is $1.99. This book has a 3.7-star average and is the first book in the Renegade Royals series. Some readers struggled with the instantaneous lustypants between the hero and heroine while others really liked the heroine’s bravery and her strength. There’s a fair amount of action/mystery/thriller elements in this book, so if that’s your cup of catnip, you might want to grab this one.

In this witty, sensual new series, Vanessa Kelly introduces the Renegade Royals, illegitimate sons of the Royal Princes who are finding their rightful places in society…

Accomplished spy Aden St. George prefers to stay away from the frivolous ton, especially after the way his mother was used by the Prince Regent. But his latest mission compels him to guard unconventional, vibrant Lady Vivien Shaw. Rescuing her from kidnappers was easy. Resisting her beauty is not. Duty demands he keep an eye on her—and naturally, his lips soon follow. For someone who views entanglements as a weakness, this is pure, delicious folly…

Though grateful for Aden’s help, Vivien has secrets she must keep hidden. Yet with her abductors still at large, she needs Aden’s protection almost as much as she craves his touch…

  • Sweet Bea

    Sweet Bea by Sarah Hegger

Sweet Bea by Sarah Hegger is 99c! This is the first in a series and an enemies to lovers, road trip historical romance. Some felt the execution of the writing was a little modern for the setting, while others loved the tension between the hero and heroine. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

    Is anything sweeter than revenge?

In a family of remarkable people, ordinary Beatrice strives to prove herself worthy. When her family is threatened with losing everything, she rushes to London to save them. Unfortunately, she chooses as her savior the very man who will see her family brought low.

Garrett has sworn vengeance on Sir Arthur of Anglesea for destroying his life when he was a boy and forcing his mother into prostitution for them to survive. He has chosen as his instrument Sir Arthur’s youngest daughter, Beatrice.

Can Beatrice’s goodness teach Garrett that love, not vengeance, is the greatest reward of all?

  • The Marquess of Cake

The Marquess of Cake by Heather Hiestand

The Marquess of Cake by Heather Hiestand is 99c! This is a Victorian historical romance about a young woman who works in her father’s shop, and – yes – a hyperglycemic marquess who is smitten with her fine sugary skills. It’s also the first book in The Redcakes series, and it looks like more of them are also on sale. Some readers thought the dudes in this book were major jerks, while others warn not to read this while hungry!

Coffee…tea…or a pastry chef sweeter than any confection…

Scotch trifle fit for Queen Victoria, scones with clotted cream…Alys Redcake knows the way to a man’s heart. Yet she is unaware that with each morsel—and flash of ankle—she is seducing the handsome marquess frequenting her father’s tea shop. Unmarried at twenty-six, Alys’s first love is the family business. But thoughts of the gentleman’s touch are driving her to distraction…

With his weakness for sugar, the Marquess of Hatbrook can imagine no more desirable woman than one scented with cake and spice. Mistaking Alys for a mere waitress, he has no doubt she would make a most delicious mistress. And when he finds himself in need of an heir, he plans to make her his convenient bride. Yet as they satisfy their craving for one another, business and pleasure suddenly collide. Will Hatbrook’s passion for sweets—and for Alys—be his heart’s undoing?

  1. MinaKelly says:

The Marquess of cake? Might he be… Lord Battenberg? Is he friends with the Viscount of biscuits?

(okay, I’m done. Mostly because the other half hasn’t come up with any more aristocake puns)

  2. I initially misread the title on the cover of Sweet Bea as Sweet BRA. 🙁

  3. ClaireC says:

Scrolling quickly, the Marquess of Cake looked a bit like Channing Tatum! And the cover model for Sweet Bea is TOTALLY posing like a bored teenager at the mall.

This does remind me that I bought The Courtesan Duchess in a previous sale and need to read it!

  4. Mary Star says:

Ha, the Marquess of Cake! That’s *amazing*! @MinaKelly, I’m all for the Lord of Biscuits. Perhaps the Count and Countess of Cookie? The Earl of Icing? The Duke of Divinity or Prince of Praline? (The last two could do a jaunt down to New Orleans to meet up with the salacious, sugary Baroness Beignet.)

  5. cleo says:

Hot Head by Damon Suede is $1.99 at Amazon and other ebook sellers. It’s a tremendously popular m/m contemporary (that I did not care for at all – read the sample first).

  6. It’s not every day that I see not one, but two books I hated in a post here. The Marquess of Cake and Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard both hold a rare one-star rating on my Goodreads shelf. I couldn’t stand the hero of The Marquess of Cake, the writing was clunky, and I just didn’t buy the plot at all, which was so disappointing because I love romances involving food. Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard was tedious and suffered from several of my pet peeves, including instalust, infodump, and a supposedly accomplished spy who finds a pair of breasts so distracting that he can’t think about anything else–while he’s on a mission.
