Historical Romance & Fiction, Plus a Contemporary!

  • The Countess Conspiracy

The Countess Conspiracy by Courtney Milan

The Countess Conspiracy by Courtney Milan is 99c at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is a historical romance and the third book in the Brothers Sinister series. Carrie gave it a B-:

I wanted a book about women and science and I got that, but it was all mixed in with a completely different book about emotional trauma and recovering from sexual and emotional abuse. They were both good books but I think I would have preferred to read them separately, not mixed together into one rather crowded story.

Sebastian Malheur is the most dangerous sort of rake: an educated one. When he’s not scandalizing ladies in the bedchamber, he’s outraging proper society with his scientific theories. He’s desired, reviled, acclaimed, and despised—and he laughs through it all.

Violet Waterfield, the widowed Countess of Cambury, on the other hand, is entirely respectable, and she’d like to stay that way. But Violet has a secret that is beyond ruinous, one that ties her irrevocably to England’s most infamous scoundrel: Sebastian’s theories aren’t his. They’re hers.

So when Sebastian threatens to dissolve their years-long conspiracy, she’ll do anything to save their partnership…even if it means opening her vulnerable heart to the rake who could destroy it for good.

  • A Most Scandalous Proposal

A Most Scandalous Proposal by Ashlyn Macnamara

A Most Scandalous Proposal by Ashlyn Macnamara is 99c! I feel like I need a flow chart for this. Julia (the heroine) is betrothed to a man, who happens to be her sister’s crush. However, Benedict (hero) hopes to convince Julia not to marry this dude and figures out that maybe his motivations are more than just platonic. Readers mention that there are two romances happening at the same time: Julia and her sister, Sophia, which they found really engaging. But some found the writing too modern for a Regency romance.

Two childhood friends in Regency England discover love with the most unlikely of partners: each other.

After watching her beloved sister, Sophia, pine over the ton’s golden boy for years, Miss Julia St. Claire has foresworn love and put herself firmly on the shelf. Unfortunately, her social-climbing mother and debt-ridden father have other ideas, and jump at the chance to marry Julia off to the newly named Earl of Clivesden…the man of Sophia’s dreams.

Since resigning his cavalry commission, Benedict Revelstoke has spent his time in London avoiding the marriage mart. But when he discovers that the Earl of Clivesden has his sights set on Julia, Benedict tries to protect his childhood best friend from the man’s advances—only to discover that more than friendship is driving his desire to defend her. He surprises them both with the force of his feelings, but when Julia refuses him, and her father announces her betrothal, Benedict fears he’s lost her forever—until Julia approaches him with a shocking scheme that will ruin her for all respectable society and lead them into an exquisite world of forbidden pleasures.

  • The Wild Princess

The Wild Princess by Mary Hart Perry

The Wild Princess by Mary Hart Perry is 99c! This is historical fiction and the first in a series about Queen Victoria’s daughters. Readers warn this leans more toward the fiction side, but many loved the main character. Have you read this one?

The marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert produced nine children—five of them princesses, all trained for the role of marriage to future monarchs. However, the fourth princess, Louise—later the duchess of Argyll—became known by the court as “the wild one.” She fought the constraints placed on her brothers and sisters. She broke with tradition by marrying outside of the elite circle of European royals at a time when no child of the English throne had wed a commoner in 300 years. Some said she married for love. Others whispered of scandal covered up by the Crown.

In fact, many years after Louise’s death, a civil lawsuit claimed that the teenage princess secretly gave birth to a baby boy out of wedlock. One Henry Locock sought to prove through DNA evidence that his grandfather was Louise’s child, delivered by Queen Victoria’s gynecologist then secretly adopted by the doctor’s young son and his wife, thereby avoiding scandal and preserving the line of succession to the throne. But the mysteries and drama involving Louise’s life don’t stop there…This is her story.

  • Things Good Girls Don’t Do

Things Good Girls Don’t Do by Codi Gary

Things Good Girls Don’t Do by Codi Gary is $1.99! This is contemporary romance about a woman who gets dumped by her longtime boyfriend, who then gets engaged to the next woman who comes (ahem) into his life. Reviewers liked it, but say the cover isn’t quite accurate – the book isn’t as hot as the cover implies, though the characters are vivid and the hero is particularly memorable. And if you’re looking to go on a binge, all of Gary’s books are on sale for $3 or less!

    Good girls don’t steal.
Good girls don’t visit sex shops.
Good girls don’t have one-night stands.

For Katie Conners, being a good girl just isn’t worth it anymore. It used to mean getting the life she always wanted. But that was before she got dumped and her ex got engaged to his rebound. So, after a bad day and one too many mojitos, Katie starts making a list of things a girl like her would never do, not in a million years . . .

As a tattoo artist with a monster motorcycle, Chase Trepasso isn’t the kind of guy you bring home to mom and dad.

And when he finds Katie’s list in a bar, he’s more than happy to help her check off a few items. Especially the ones on the naughtier side . . .

Katie’s more than tempted by Chase’s offer, as long as they keep things uncomplicated. But as they spend more time together, she may just wind up breaking the most important rule of all: Good girls don’t fall in love with bad boys.

  1. Peggy says:

The Chief (Highland Guard Book 1) by Monica McCarty is $1.99 today @ Amazon.

  2. Jessica says:

The first Spinster House book (What to Do With a Duke) is also $1.99 on Amazon today. I haven’t read it yet, but it looked intriguing (it depends on how full-blown the magical aspect of it is) and I was waiting for it to go on sale.

  3. Mary Star says:

Tessa Dare’s How to Catch a Wild Viscount and Grace Burrowes’ Thomas are free on Amazon. Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander is 3.99. Would it be possible to do a regular feature on freebies? There are definitely plenty on Amazon and so many are by authors unknown to me that I would love recs.

  4. Amanda says:

@Mary Star: I don’t think I could do an entirely new feature (as I’m only one woman, haha), but I can definitely try to make more of effort to recommend free titles in this feature when I come across them. And of course, the Bitchery is welcome to leave recs for great free books or other books on sale in the comments. Sometimes I do a sale post the night before and I may miss books that go on sale the following morning.

  5. Mary Star says:

  6. Lora says:

I love the Brothers Sinister series and Sebastian was a fave character of mine. I’ll be linking some pals to this sale so they can add Violet’s story to their collection My favorite part of that book was the mother’s rule book and shadow rules. I thought it was a very believable family dynamic actually.

  7. SeventhWave says:

I read The Wild Princess some time ago and recall liking it, though the details have faded.

Violet and Sebastian are two of my all-time favorite Courtney Milan characters, and I strongly recommend that everyone go buy The Countess Conspiracy!!
