  1. Avital Ordan says:

    stapler

  2. Colleen P. says:

Paper clips forever! They can be used for so many things–including breaking out of handcuffs!

  3. bookworm1990 says:

My favorite useful thing on my desk is my desk lamp. Because my desk is adjacent to my bed, I don’t have to get up and turn on the lights if I can’t sleep and want to read. I can just roll over 🙂

  4. Late night reader says:

A letter opener! I used to just open letters (and bills) with my finger, and would get paper cuts and have torn, raggedy envelopes. After reading so many historical romances with scenes in gorgeous studies and offices, I decided that I should see if I could find a letter opener to make my workspace a little fancier. i got a simple one for about $5 from amazon and it changed my life. Even bills are more fun to open with this thing! Just a little thing but it makes all the difference in my day.

  5. Meg p says:

Hmm… my stand up desk that sits on the regular desk?I designed and built it, so I’m rather proud of it.

  6. Mad Madam M says:

I’m obsessed with the little post it flags that come in a ton of different colors. I think I currently have 6 different colors on my desk drawer. So helpful and so pretty! 🙂

  7. A pot that a friend made when he was going through a ceramics phase. It’s a very nice pot, glazed and all, so I keep pens in it.

  8. Jenny says:

My favourite useful thing on my desk right now is my wedding planner – with all tick lists duly ticked 🙂

  9. Jennifer says:

A snazzy little tool for taking staples out of documented so they can be scanned – prevents broken and chipped nails

  10. Hannah says:

    My handy x-acto.

  11. Alexandra says:

Any other day I would have said “pencil!!”, but today the most useful item has to be … lip balm. For some reason I woke up this morning with badly chapped lips, and now I’m putting balm on like crazy. (Ok, help a non-native speaker bitch out here, is “chapped” even a word? The more I think about it, the weirder it looks and sounds.)

I am a total stationary addict, and the only thing so far that helped me curb my notebook excesses is that I created a strict colour code – now I don’t even buy stuff that doesn’t match. BUT OF COURSE GOLD ALWAYS MATCHES, YOU EVIL MASTERMIND. 😀

  12. SQ says:

Most used item on my desk – lip balm!

  13. Tibicina says:

A good pair of scissors. (Though stapler is probably a close second.)

  14. Harper Gray says:

On the practical side I would have to say pen and notebook, with post-it bookmarks running a close second (third?). The first thing that I looked at having read “most useful thing on your desk”, though, was my cup of tea.

I can stop whenever I want. Really.

  15. mspym says:

My whiteboard! To-dos, reminders, handy drawing space for impromptu process mapping plus magnetic so i can stick flyers and other non-permanent items to it.

  16. Brandy says:

My favorite thing on my desk is my mug of pens. The mug itself is from my university, so I love it for that, but the colorful pen collection it holds is useful and makes me smile.

  17. Joy Parks says:

The most useful thing on my desk is my cat Chase, who sleeps behind my laptop while I work. No writing means no Fancy Feast for Chase, so he is my muse and constant inspiration.

  18. Francesca says:

I’d say spare chargers and wires for my phone and tablet. Also, a few bottles of essential oil and a bottle of room mist.

  19. Qualisign says:

    Reading glasses. Old. ‘Nuff said.

  20. jc says:

Scissors for sure. I think the height of luxury is to have scissors in every room, so you never have to run around searching for them. But I’m also very partial to my “barkclips” (https://www.barkshop.com/items/barkclips-kitted?gclid=CNWx0eXUgc0CFQhkhgod5wgHfg) – dog shaped paper clips. I rarely actually use them, because I don’t want lose or damage them, but I love looking at them.

  21. Kate says:

Two coasters – one for the teapot and one for the teacup. I have days of reading and writing that I just couldn’t get through without a big pot of tea!

  22. Diane says:

    Sticky notes!

  23. Janira says:

My pencil holder that is chock full of pens, pencils, and Sharpies!

  24. Helen R-S says:

My pen. It’s definitely the object that gets the most use!

  25. peggy h says:

BIg button calculator. Sure, my computer has a calculator, my phone has a calculator. But I really can do more with an old-fashioned big button calculator. I have one at my work desk, one at my home office desk, and one at my side of the sofa!

  26. Lobo says:

    Sticky notes, notebooks and Sharpies.

  27. Lynnette says:

Most useful – pencil and spiral note cube. Most necessary – tea mug. Makes me happiest – picture of the family.

  28. Cat G says:

Small notepad and pen, without which no lists get made and nothing gets done.

  29. Amy says:

I am lame, but I just got a new wrist rest for my keyboard and I’m a little bit in love!

  30. Gretchen says:

Most useful? Ergonomic keyboard with reverse tilt – a game changer for my sore wrists. A useful item that brings me the most joy? My fountain pen. I am more thoughtful about what I write, and then I pause for a moment to admire the beauty of the shading in the ink.

  31. Erin K. says:

I have a huge eraser that my boss brought back from her travels. I love it because it works really well to erase my mistakes!

  32. Heather B says:

I have to say my staple remover, as lame as that sounds. I’m constantly getting proposals that are stapled together despite repeated requests to not staple them, so I use it more than almost anything that’s not my computer.

  33. RJ says:

Hot glue gun. It saves the day so often.

  34. Nat says:

Most useful is my black pen!

  35. Lostshadows says:

Fudging a bit, since my actual desk is currently a clutter repository, but a pen. Probably one of my purple gel ink Uniballs.

  36. Noemi says:

Coloured sticky notes. I have more than I need but I love them and I can’t stop buying them.

  37. Kelly D says:

Post-it notes are always very helpful.

  38. Kathryn says:

3 hole punch – it means I can keep all my readings and notes nice and tidy in binders, rather than all over my desk, coffee table, and dining room table.

  39. Lora says:

My tobacco bark candle… Makes me feel like a gritty writer when I work, like maybe I just put out my cigar before typing out the great American novel. But minus the side effects.

  40. Alex says:

The most useful thing on my desk is my legal pad of the moment…I go through them so quickly.
