  • Beauty

    Beauty by Robin McKinley

Beauty by Robin McKinley is $1.99! McKinley is highly recommended around these parts and Beauty & the Beast retellings is some major catnip. Some readers took issue with the pacing, but many loved the writing and detail. Have you read this one?

Robin McKinley’s acclaimed first novel is a brilliant reimagining of the classic French fairy tale

I was the youngest of three daughters. Our literal-minded mother named us Grace, Hope, and Honour. . . . My father still likes to tell the story of how I acquired my odd nickname: I had come to him for further information when I first discovered that our names meant something besides you-come-here. He succeeded in explaining grace and hope, but he had some difficulty trying to make the concept of honour understandable to a five-year-old. . . . I said: ‘Huh! I’d rather be Beauty.’ . . .

By the time it was evident that I was going to let the family down by being plain, I’d been called Beauty for over six years. . . . I wasn’t really very fond of my given name, Honour, either . . . as if ‘honourable’ were the best that could be said of me.

The sisters’ wealthy father loses all his money when his merchant fleet is drowned in a storm, and the family moves to a village far away. Then the old merchant hears what proves to be a false report that one of his ships had made it safe to harbor at last, and on his sad, disappointed way home again he becomes lost deep in the forest and has a terrifying encounter with a fierce Beast, who walks like a man and lives in a castle. The merchant’s life is forfeit, says the Beast, for trespass and the theft of a rose—but he will spare the old man’s life if he sends one of his daughters: “Your daughter would take no harm from me, nor from anything that lives in my lands.” When Beauty hears this story—for her father had picked the rose to bring to her—her sense of honor demands that she take up the Beast’s offer, for “cannot a Beast be tamed?”

  • One Touch More

One Touch More by Mandy Baxter

One Touch More by Mandy Baxter is $1.99! This is the third book in the U.S. Marshals series and is a contemporary romance with a touch of suspense. Also, is it just me or is the cover dude giving a Peter Facinelli vibe? Readers loved the hero, but found they had to suspend their disbelief for the heroine’s backstory. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

Strong, relentless, and lethal, he plays every angle to trap the worst criminals.  But for the one woman he can’t resist, he’ll break all the rules…

For hotel manager Tabitha Martin, bad boys usually spell disaster. And her new guest promises just that, with his formidable build, tattooed biceps, and quiet take-no-mess attitude. Tabitha is already putting everything on the line to escape her vicious drug-dealing ex’s control for good—but a single sizzling moment in “Damien Evans’” arms has her wanting all the trouble he can give…

He’s been undercover too long and likes living dangerously too much. U. S. Marshal Parker Evans figures maybe that’s why he doesn’t immediately put Tabitha in custody. Sure, she’s his one chance to finally take down a major drug ring. But every minute he protects this mostly innocent blonde leaves his heart all too vulnerable. And the cost of desire could be a deadly endgame…

  • Reckless

    Reckless by Kimberly Kincaid

Reckless by Kimberly Kincaid is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal, so get it while it’s hot – get it? Because the hero is a firefighter. He also looks a little like Matt Damon. The snarky, sexy banter was a high point for readers, but some felt the drama was a little much. Another complained that it was too “smutty,” so there’s also that.

    SOMEONE’S BOUND TO GET BURNED…

Zoe Westin may be a fire captain’s daughter, but feeding the people in her hometown of Fairview is her number one priority. Running a soup kitchen is also the perfect way to prove to her dad that helping people doesn’t always mean risking life and limb. But when she’s saddled with a gorgeous firefighter doing community service after yet another daredevil stunt, the kitchen has never been so hot.

Alex Donovan thrives on adrenaline, and stirring a pot of soup doesn’t exactly qualify. He’s not an expert at following the rules either, not even when they come from the stubborn, sexy daughter of the man who’s not only his boss, but his mentor. Determined to show Zoe that not every risk ends in catastrophe, Alex challenges her both in the kitchen and out. One reckless step leads to another, but will falling for each other be a risk worth taking, or will it just get them burned?

  • Cowgirl Up and Ride

Cowgirl Up and Ride by Lorelei James

Cowgirl Up and Ride by Lorelei James is 99c! This is the third book in her Rough Riders series, which is a western contemporary erotica series. Many of the books, including this one, include BDSM and menage scenes. From my experience, James’ books are always high on emotion and high in sex, so be warned if that’s not your thing. Any other James readers out there?

Ridin’ the edge of lust is fun…until someone falls in love.

For years, goody-two boots AJ Foster wished her dream man Cord McKay would see her beyond the girl in pigtails. Now that she’s old enough to stake her claim on him, she challenges the cowboy to teach her how to ride—and she doesn’t mean horses.

Saddled with running the McKay ranch, dealing with the wild behavior of his brother and cousins, and raising his young son alone, divorced rancher Cord has sworn off all women. Yet AJ’s innocence and sexual curiosity is a temptation he can’t resist.

From the start of their bedroom games, they’re both aware the pull between them goes deeper than just smokin’ hot sex. Although the sexy cowgirl sets his blood ablaze, Cord is determined to withstand AJ’s efforts to lasso his battered heart. But AJ isn’t willing to settle for less than the whole shootin’ match with her western knight.

Sweet AJ has the power to heal—or heel—the gruff cowboy…unless Cord’s pride keeps him from admitting their relationship is more than a simple roll in the hay.

Warning: This book contains raunchy sex scenes that’ll work you into a lather faster than a winded horse, graphic language, resourceful use of baling twine, and nekkid cowboy lovin’.

  1. Harper Gray says:

Personally, of McKinley’s Beauty and the Beast retellings I prefer Rose Daughter. That being said, Beauty is still beautiful and beautifully written. I love McKinley’s voice; she’s been an auto-buy author for me ever since I read Spindle’s End (a Sleeping Beauty retelling) mmmph years ago. Definitely recommend it!

  2. mel burns says:

YES YES to Beauty, it’s my favorite Robin McKinley, as is The Blue Sword, Spindle’s End and The Hero and the Crown. :))

  3. Shan says:

I remember Beauty from when I was young. The only other rendition of Beauty and the Beast I had known until then was obviously the Disney one. This book was so unique and fresh that even though I can’t remember all the details I remember the vibe it gave so well. I should find it and reread it.

  4. Kate says:

I’m a fan of Beauty from way back. I keep trying to get my 13yo son to read it, but no dice so far.

  5. Beauty is a wonderful book. I still have my copy from years ago, and re-read it periodically.

  6. hapax says:

@mel burns — definitely agree, but would add in DEERSKIN.

  7. Mary says:

My favorite Robin McKinley is Sunshine, but beauty is also wonderful. As is The Blue Sword! And everything else she’s ever written.

  8. Booklovingirl says:

Robin McKinley’s Sunshine for the win! One of my all time favorites. Hmmm. I’m off to go reread.

  9. Crystal F. says:

LOVED ‘Beauty’ when I was a young teenager. The Disney film coming out made me love it even more so. I couldn’t get enough of that fairy tale, it’s one of my favorite tropes.

I was feeling nostalgic a few years ago and bought a copy of ‘Beauty’ as well as ‘Rose Daughter’. It was one of those instances where what worked for you in your younger years doesn’t always work for you as an adult. I couldn’t get over the slow pacing. Actually, pacing has been a problem for me in every novelization of BATB that I’ve tried in recent years. But maybe I’ll give those two books another chance eventually.

  10. Ashley H. says:

The $1.99 sale for Beauty is already over? Noooo! 🙁 curse you, Amazon.

  11. SeventhWave says:

‘Beauty’ is my third-favorite BATB retelling, with ‘Rose Daughter’ and T. Kingfisher’s ‘Bryony and Roses’ currently tied for first.

Like many of you, though, I have too many favorite McKinley books to list just one!

  12. cleo says:

I was just about to comment knowledgeably about Beauty when I realized that I haven’t actually read it. But I did read Sheri Teper’s weird and wonderful Beauty retelling.

  13. Isabelle says:

If anyone who missed Beauty at $1.99 (like me, sadly) wants to pick up another McKinley, Hero and the Crown is $1.99 right now!

  14. Susan/DC says:

I love McKinley’s “Beauty” for itself but also because it’s the last book I read aloud to my oldest son. We were both so engrossed in the story that we’d keep reading even after his bedtime. My husband would tell us to stop but the book was too good to put down after only one chapter a night. Very fond memories (and as the oldest of 3 sisters myself, I liked that her sisters weren’t evil).

  15. Susan/DC says:

P.S. “Deerskin” is also very good but it is an entirely different kind of book. Read it on the recommendation of my now adult oldest son, but it came with a warning, and rightly so. Most definitely not a book for children.

  16. kitkat9000 says:

My favorite version of BATB is Entreat Me by Grace Draven.

Personally, I cannot read McKinley as everything I’ve tried by her killed me with the pacing. And I initially read her based on glowing reviews from people here, but as always, individual mileage may vary. Mine did.
