  • After a Fashion

After a Fashion by Jen Turano

After a Fashion by Jen Turano is $1.99! This is the first book in the A Class of Their Own series, and is set in New York in the late 19th century. The conflicts are bountiful, too: crossing class boundaries, and pretend engagement to satisfy business arrangements. Readers who liked it say that the dialogue and banter are terrific – and the book has a 4-star average, too! (And gosh, the cover is gorgeous.)

Miss Harriet Peabody dreams of the day she can open up a shop selling refashioned gowns to independent working women like herself. Unfortunately, when an errand for her millinery shop job goes sadly awry due to a difficult customer, she finds herself out of an income.

Mr. Oliver Addleshaw is on the verge of his biggest business deal yet when he learns his potential partner prefers to deal with men who are settled down and wed. When Oliver witnesses his ex not-quite-fiance cause the hapless Harriet to lose her job, he tries to make it up to her by enlisting her help in making a good impression on his business partner.

Harriet quickly finds her love of fashion can’t make her fashionable. She’ll never truly fit into Oliver’s world, but just as she’s ready to call off the fake relationship, fancy dinners, and elegant balls, a threat from her past forces both Oliver and Harriet to discover that love can come in the most surprising packages.

  • Marriage Most Scandalous

Marriage Most Scandalous by Johanna Lindsey

Marriage Most Scandalous is Johanna Lindsey is $1.99! This is a historical romance with a marriage of convenience plot, which readers really seemed to enjoy. However, a few mention a particular scene where the hero doesn’t respond well to the word “no” and it left a bad impression on them. Have you read this one?

When Sebastian Townshend, son of the eighth Earl of Edgewood, was banished from his family due to the tragic results of a duel, he vowed never to return to England. Now living on the continent, Sebastian has forged a new identity as a deadly mercenary, The Raven. But his former neighbor, Lady Margaret Landor, has different plans for him.

Back in England, Sebastian’s father has had several accidents and Margaret suspects foul play and deception that reach as far back as the infamous duel. Convinced that only Sebastian can set the situation to rights, Margaret arranges a scandalous bargain with him that includes Sebastian’s returning home as her husband. As the newlyweds uncover a deadly scheme, a fierce passion blossoms between them, which neither anticipated — and neither can resist.

  • The Baron Next Door

The Baron Next Door by Erin Knightley

The Baron Next Door by Erin Knightley is $2.99! This is the first book in the Prelude to a Kiss series and features little to no sex. Just FYI. Many readers loved the hero, as he deals with chronic pain, though some wished more of his past explored his experiences. And, since the book takes place during a music festival, the descriptions of music were a high point.

Charity Effington learned two valuable lessons from her first betrothal:

    1) When one loses the attention of an earl, one gains the attention of every gossip in London.
    2) Despite the lingering scandal, she’s not prepared to marry for anything less than love.

After an exhausting Season, Bath’s first annual music festival offers Charity the perfect escape. Between her newly formed trio and her music-loving grandmother, Charity is free to play the pianoforte to her heart’s content. That is, until their insufferably rude, though undeniably handsome, neighbor tells her to keep the “infernal racket” to a minimum.

Hugh Danby, Baron Cadgwith, may think he’s put an end to the noise, but he has no idea what he’s begun. Though the waters of Bath provide relief from the suffering of his war injuries, he finds his new neighbor bothersome, vexing, and… inexplicably enchanting. Before long, Hugh suspects that even if his body heals, it’s his heart that might end up broken.

  • No Proper Lady

No Proper Lady by Isabel Cooper

No Proper Lady by Isabel Cooper is $1.99 at Amazon! This is described as “Terminator meets My Fair Lady” and is a historical romance with scifi elements and time travel. Readers loved the idea, but seemed to find fault with the execution because it tries to do too much.

It’s Terminator meets My Fair Lady in this fascinating debut of black magic and brilliant ball gowns, martial arts and mysticism.

England, 1888. The trees are green, the birds are singing, and and no one has any idea that in a few hundred years, demons will destroy it all. Joan plans to keep it that way. All she has to do is take out the dark magician responsible—before he summons the demons in the first place. But as a rough-around-the-edges assassin from that bleak future, she’ll have to learn how to fit into polite Victorian society to get close to her target.

Simon Grenville has his own reasons for wanting to destroy Alex Reynell. The man used to be his best friend—until his practice of the dark arts almost killed Simon’s sister. The beautiful, half-naked stranger Simon meets in the woods may be the perfect instrument for his revenge. It will just take a little time to teach her the necessary etiquette and assemble a proper wardrobe. But as each day passes, Simon is less sure he wants Joan anywhere near Reynell. Because no spell in the world will save his future if she isn’t in it.

  1. Vasha says:

The premise of No Proper Lady is catnip to me, but the reviews don’t look promising. Sigh. Being as Mt. TBR is starting to resemble Everest, I guess I’ll skip it.

  2. Kate K.F. says:

The Baron next Door is wonderful. I didn’t even notice the lack of sex because the sexual tension was huge. Its a fantastic book if you love music as the heroine is a composer and their main disagreement is due to the hero dealing with horrible headaches. The headaches are due to major war trauma and I highly recommend it. Her books are wonderful, the character’s are great and she makes kisses hot. I loved Ruined by a Rake which involves the two main characters flirting and fencing.

  3. Heather S says:

@Kate K.F.: YES! “Ruined by a Rake” was my intro to Erin’s books, and I haven’t read another by her because I’ve been so afraid of spoiling how much I loved that novella with books that might not hold up as well. You know what I mean?

We need a post for this, SB Sarah. Authors that we adore but have not read more than one or two books by because we’re so afraid that something dreadful will happen – like the other books won’t be as good and it will spoil our appreciation for what we have read. Erin is definitely one of mine, because I loved “Ruined by a Rake” SO MUCH and I’m terrified that I will feel “meh” or outright dislike another of hers.

  4. cleo says:

@Heather S – yes! I’ve done that too. In fact I’ve tried to figure out why it is that sometimes I’ll read a great book by a new to me author and it will make me want to read everything they’re ever written and other times it has the opposite effect – it makes me reluctant to try anything else because there’s no way the author could have written more than one perfect book. And I have no idea. Some authors/books are just like potato chips (can’t stop with just one) and others are more like a super rich dark chocolate that you want to savor.

  5. cleo says:

Is After A Fashion an inspie? The cover looks like an inspie to me (but I don’t care enough to look up the book, just enough to comment on it).

  6. Amanda says:

@Cleo: It’s from a known Inspirational/Christian fiction publisher, but several complaints on Goodreads mention that though some people have shelved it as such, it didn’t seem like one to them (some readers seemed downright angry that it wasn’t as Inspirational as they hoped). So I was unsure whether or not to label it as one.

  7. Gina says:

“Anything for You” by Kristan Higgins is on sale for $0.99 until the 29th at several vendors. I love her books!

  8. Christine says:

Judith Merkle Riley’s second book in the Margaret Of Ashbury series “In Pursuit Of The Green Lion” is on sale for $1.99 which is a great deal as her ebooks are normally $10.00 to 11.00 each.

She is one of my favorite authors. It’s historical fiction rather than romance for those who are unfamiliar with her work.

  9. Kay says:

@Vasha No Proper Lady surprised me. I like sci-fi and romance but don’t usually like supernaturals. It ended up being a crazy mix of genres with good characters and a fun plot. One of my top 10 this year.

  10. Christine – I definitely second your rec of Judith Merkle Riley’s Margaret of Ashbury (though the third book was not as good as the others). Historical with a dash of fantasy, sometimes heartwrenching (the first book!) and sometimes really, really funny.

I was just thinking that there are an uncountably vast number of 19th century historical romances set in Britain, and tons set in the western US during that period, but not many set in the eastern US. (Or the rest of the world!) I’d like to see more of that – and more recs.

  11. Mary Star says:

@Althea Claire Duffy, Sara Donati’s Into the Wilderness series is fantastic and starts in upstate NY. One of my favorite books is Catherine Marshall’s Christy, set in Appalachia at the beginning of the 20th century.

  12. Michelle says:

Ruined by a Rake is free at Amazon

  13. Thanks, Mary Star! I’ve read Christy (I think it’s the only inspie I’ve ever read) and the name Sara Donati rings a bell but only faintly; I’ll have to check that out.

  14. Christine says:

@Althea Clare Duffy- I’m a huge Judith Merkle Riley fan too. The Oracle Glass is probably one of my all time favorite books.

I can second @Mary Star- “Into The Wilderness” by Sara Donati is a great book. It got a lot of buzz when it came out partly because Diana Gabaldon let her use a minor character from the Outlander series in it and/or one of the sequels if I recall correctly. I didn’t follow on with the series of her books but I can say this one is great.

  15. Lostshadows says:

I know I’m a bit late, but A Marriage Most Scandalous was the last* Lindsey I read. The whole marriage of convenience plot felt incredibly forced. There was a brief subplot, which the main plot rendered completely moot by the end. And the resolution of the main plot included a massively anticlimactic revelation.

There was more, but I don’t remember the book well enough to criticize it further.

*Okay, it might have been The Devil Who Tamed Her. It was a cumulative two crap books in a row thing.
