Two Recommended Memoirs, Plus Contemporary & Historical Romances

  • Bossypants

    Bossypants by Tina Fey

RECOMMENDED: Bossypants by Tina Fey is $3.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched, yay! I loved, loved, loved this book. More than I loved Yes, Please by Amy Poehler. It’s very funny and Fey makes it seem almost effortless. I have a hardcopy of this book and I refuse to lend it out from fear I’ll never get it back.

Before Liz Lemon, before “Weekend Update,” before “Sarah Palin,” Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV.

She has seen both these dreams come true.

At last, Tina Fey’s story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon—from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.

Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we’ve all suspected: you’re no one until someone calls you bossy.

  • I Am Malala

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

RECOMMENDED: I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai is $3.99! This is also a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched elsewhere. This is a powerful and touching memoir and if you’re even thinking about wanting to read it, I suggest snapping this deal up. I did find some aspects to be a little strange, like the mix of historical and political aspects along with Malala’s own experiences. For those who have read it, what did you think?

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala’s miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I AM MALALA is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls’ education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

I AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of one person’s voice to inspire change in the world.

  • It Takes a Scandal

It Takes a Scandal by Caroline Linden

It Takes a Scandal by Caroline Linden is $1.99. This is book two in the Scandalous series, and it has a 3.7-star average on GoodReads. Readers particularly liked that the heroine in this book has a loving home life with caring parents and a close relationship with her sister, and that they are not of the nobility. Many readers also loved the beta hero, Sebastian. Have you read this one?

    Sometimes It Takes a Scandal…

Abigail Weston has everything: beauty, wit, and one of the largest dowries in England. Her parents hope she’ll wed an earl. Abigail hopes for a man who wants her desperately and passionately. But the money seems to blind every man she meets—except one.

Sebastian Vane has nothing. He came home from war with a shattered leg to find his father mad and his inheritance gone. He’s not a fit suitor for anyone, let alone an heiress. But Abigail lights up his world like a comet, bright and beautiful and able to see him instead of his ruined reputation. And it might end happily ever after…

    To Reveal Your Heart’s Desire

…Until Benedict Lennox begins courting Abigail. Ben is everything Sebastian isn’t—wealthy, charming, heir to an earl. Sebastian won’t give up the only girl he’s ever loved without a fight, but Abigail must choose between the penniless gentleman who moves her heart, and the suitor who is everything her parents want.

  • Only in My Dreams

Only in My Dreams by Darcy Burke

Only in My Dreams by Darcy Burke is 99c! This is a contemporary romance with a friends with benefits plot between a woman and her high school crush. It’s also a small town romance, so clearly there’s some catnip for everyone. Many readers noted that Burke was a new author for them and wound up really enjoying this first book in the series. It has a 4-star rating on GoodReads and the rest of the series is also discounted!

Fed up with her self-imposed single life, successful event planner Sara Archer heads to a bar for a night of dancing … and bumps into Dylan Wescott, the high school crush she hasn’t seen in years. A little harmless flirting leads to a hot, completely uncharacteristic one-night stand; but when she wakes up alone, Sara knows her life is too complicated for a relationship and there can’t be a repeat.

Dylan, a divorced, ex-military construction contractor, limits himself to casual flings—his failed marriage proves he’s better off alone anyway—but he can’t stop dreaming about Sara. And when his firm is hired to oversee the renovation project run by the Archer siblings, Dylan and Sara are unable to resist their explosive chemistry.

But when their secret affair grows beyond “friends with benefits” and neither is willing to admit they want more, family drama and emotional scars may ruin their chance at a love they believed was only in their dreams.

  1. DonnaMarie says:

Definitely second the rec for Bossypants. The audiobook was a great stress reliever on the drive home from work.

  2. Rissa brahm says:

Nearly peed my “bossy” pants (sorry–that was bad) several times throughout this book. I’ve been endeared to Tina Fey ever since. Humble and hilarious. She shows imperfection is beautiful and so is having strength, leadership, and (holy shit!) a vagina!

  3. Amy Renee says:

Oh yes, another recommendation to get the audio book for Bossypants – Tina Fey reads it herself and it is hilarious!

  4. Thanks for the rec on Bossypants. I listened to Yes, Please and really liked it, but it kind of felt like “oh I already read one of those, not in the mood for more” when I saw Bossypants.

    Will get the audiobook.
