Links: Podcasts, Jane Seymour, and The Golden Girls

Cozy winter still life: cup of hot coffee and book with warm plaid on windowsill against snow landscape from outside.Aw, yeah! It’s Wednesday! I hope your week’s have been great so far, but if not, hopefully these links will help! I can pretty much guarantee one of them will. You’ll know it when you read it.

Comedian and all around badass, Margaret Cho, was on the Sporkful podcast to talk about her history of eating disorders and being “Hollywood obese.” Cho always seems to have a way of blending the serious with her trademark wit and humor. It’s an emotional interview and I recommend having tissues handy:

“It’s a very secretive disease,” Margaret says. “You do weird sh*t. I would get a whole loaf of bread and chew it and then spit it out into the toilet. Or I would go for weeks with only eating persimmons.”

Cho also has some great advice if you or others you know may be struggling with an eating disorder.

Kelly Faircloth at Jezebel is doing God’s work on her coverage of romance and history, but so far, I don’t think anything will beat her exploration into Jane Seymour’s Guide to Romantic Living, a book published in 1986 on how to live you best, romantic life:

Best of all: “Change your name, change the color of your hair, change your habits experiment in order to discover who you are. Don’t just think, I am this person who has dark hair and is called such and such and lives at such and such an address. Your real self, who is perhaps waiting for you to discover her, might have blond hair or bright red hair, she might wear glasses or own a pair of frivolous shoes or go out on blind dates. Try something different.”

Yes, that’s right: Jane Seymour says maybe you should dye your hair and run off to Monte Carlo. And who’s to say she’s wrong?

One sec, turning myself into a Bottle Blonde and buying some cheap airline tickets.

Author Marjorie Liu was recently interviewed in Guernica and boy, is it a doozy. In it, she talks about writing comics, race, her own influences, and of course, romance novels:

For the most part, romance novels are stories about women finding and taking up space for themselves. And not just taking up space, but daring to find happiness. And yes, romance novels are about the fantasy—the heterosexual fantasy—of having the perfect relationship with a man, but it’s also about women taking power over their sexuality, women taking control over their lives, women making themselves vulnerable to all the intimacies of love. Love can be devastating. It’s hard, actually, falling in love. It requires making yourself vulnerable, and romance novels are all about women making themselves vulnerable, and finding strength and happiness from that great act of courage.

There are some many quotes I wanted to showcase here, but do yourself a favor and read it. Easily one of the best things I’ve read on the internet in the last week.

For those who love podcasts and are always searching for something new to listen to while working/exercising/commuting/etc., I stumbled across this little gem and I’m definitely in love with it, considering my recent podcast with Sarah on sex and dating. Guys We F****d is hilarious and candid and I recommend it for anyone who wants to hear women talk about sex positivity:

Each week, Corinne Fisher & Krystyna Hutchinson (together known as the comedy duo Sorry About Last Night) interview a gentleman they slept with. Some they made love to, some they had sex with a few times and some they f****d in a hotel bathroom…er, what?

Sometimes their guests are past paramours. Other times, they have special guests such as Amber Rose.

Do you like toys? No, not those kinds of toys. Like collectible toys! Well get ready because Funko, the company who brings you those cute, Pop! Vinyl figurines had a big announcement a few days ago. Brace yourselves because the cast of The Golden Girls is getting the Pop! Vinyl treatment! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they’ll be out in time for birthday this spring, but there’s no release date yet.

So what have you seen or read this week that’s just rocking your socks off? And as always, thank you for being a friend!

  2. jimthered says:

I’m always amazed at the wide variety of Funko POP! toys. They also seem to be a staple of any decent-sized comic book store.

  3. Amanda says:

@Jimthered: I always covet them when I see them, but I just lack the room to start a collection. However, I think I can find some space for those four lovely ladies!
