  • The Wicked Wallflower

The Wicked Wallflower by Maya Rodale

The Wicked Wallflower by Maya Rodale is 99c at most vendors, though $1.99 at All Romance! This is a historical romance that’s part of Rodale’s “Bad Boys & Wallflowers” series. The hero and heroine have a pretend engagement, and you know those always work out the way the characters intend.  Elyse reviewed the book and wound up giving it a C-:

I liked how Blake and Emma finally come together in the end, but getting there was a little rocky. The Wicked Wallflower wasn’t a bad book by any means, but with so many Regencies out there, it failed to stand out from the rest of the pack.

Lady Emma Avery has accidentally announced her engagement—to the most eligible man in England. As soon as it’s discovered that Emma has never actually met the infamously attractive Duke of Ashbrooke, she’ll no longer be a wallflower; she’ll be a laughingstock. And then Ashbrooke does something Emma never expected. He plays along with her charade.

A temporary betrothal to the irreproachable Lady Avery could be just the thing to repair Ashbrooke’s tattered reputation. Seducing her is simply a bonus. And then Emma does what he never expected: she refuses his advances. It’s unprecedented. Inconceivable. Quite damnably alluring.

London’s Least Likely to Misbehave has aroused the curiosity—among other things—of London’s most notorious rogue. Now nothing will suffice but to uncover Emma’s wanton side and prove there’s nothing so satisfying as two perfect strangers…being perfectly scandalous together.

  • The Bargain

    The Bargain by Jane Ashford

The Bargain by Jane Ashford is $2.51 at Amazon and Google:Play and $2.99 elsewhere! This is a historical romance with a scientist hero and a heroine trying to investigate a haunting by the ghost of her late mother. Readers loved the blend of mystery and paranormal with the historical setting, but some readers found it to be a little slow and lacking in emotional connection. Have you read this one?

    A scientifically minded nobleman

Lord Alan Gresham is the sixth son of the Duke of Langford and, as such, has been allowed to remain at Oxford to pursue his scientific studies. When the prince regent asks him to debunk the “ghost” of a dead actress haunting Carlton House, he cannot refuse, and is forced back to the Society he deplores. But upon meeting the daughter of the alleged ghost, his calm, logical investigation is disrupted.

Learns the breathless chemistry of desire

Ariel Harding doesn’t believe in ghosts, but she’s determined to investigate this haunting. Her mother recently committed suicide, and Ariel is desperate to find the reason. She’ll work with Alan because he has access to Prinny’s resources, but she never dreamed she’d make a perilous bargain with a man who’s as maddeningly arrogant as he is confoundedly attractive…

  • Ruthless

    Ruthless by Anne Stuart

Ruthless by Anne Stuart is $1.99! This is a historical romance and I’d definitely say it’s a little on the darker side as (if I recall) both characters have a history of trauma. There is a significant age difference between the hero and heroine (sixteen years) and be forewarned, that the hero does sleep with other people while pursuing the heroine. I wrote a quick review of this on Goodreads back in 2011:

The sense of sexual tension between Rohan and Elinor was achieved perfectly. I just felt that the climax (pun intended) fell short of what I was expecting. I wanted more animalistic passion, I suppose, given Elinor’s sharp tongue and Rohan’s claimed prowess. In terms of that and the resolution of the book’s central conflict, the buildup was way more enjoyable to experience than the conclusion of both aspects.

Few outsiders will ever witness the dark misdeeds of the Heavenly Host. And among this secret society, where exiled Georgian aristocrats gather to indulge their carnal desires, fewer still can match the insatiable appetite of their chief provocateur, the mysterious Viscount Rohan.

Pursuit of physical pleasure is his both his preferred pastime and his most-pressing urge, until he encounters the fascination of a woman who won’t be swayed. And while his dark seduction appalls the pure and impoverished Elinor Harriman, she finds herself intrigued…and secretly drawn to the man behind the desire.

New York Times bestselling author Anne Stuart masterfully weaves an irresistible tale of lust and privilege in decadent times. Passions will be loosed, egos will be tamed-This is Rohan.

  • My Highland Spy

My Highland Spy by Victoria Roberts

My Highland Spy by Victoria Roberts is $2.51 at Amazon and Google:Play and $2.99 elsewhere! This is a Scottish historical romance with an enemies to lovers plot and a spy heroine! Readers loved the humor, as well as the romance, and many have said this book has started their Victoria Roberts addiction. However, some say the hero and heroine suffer from a major case of insta-love. Have you read this one?

This Highland Laird won’t bow to the Crown

Laird Ruairi Sutherland refuses to send his only son away to be educated by the English. And he most definitely will not appear in Edinburgh to pay homage to a liege who has no respect for Scotland. So he does what any laird would do—he lies to the king. The last thing Ruairi expects is a beautiful English governess to appear on his doorstep.

But this lady spy might make him…

Lady Ravenna Walsingham is a seasoned spy who is sent to the savage Highlands to uncover a nefarious plot against the Crown. Playing the part of an English governess—a job easier said than done—she infiltrates the home of Laird Sutherland, a suspected conspirator.

If she doesn’t betray him first

Ravenna soon discovers that the only real threat Sutherland poses is to her heart. But will the proud Highland laird ever forgive her when he discovers the woman he loves in an English spy?

The dress detail on My Highland Spy make it look like she’s holding a knife. It’s too bad that isn’t actually the case because it ups the interest on the cover.

  2. Peg E says:

The novella “So Sweet” by Rebekah Weatherspoon is $.99 today @ Amazon.

  3. Quidnunc says:

My first thought was that there was a knife also!

  4. Kat says:

The character is quite proficient with knives, actually.

  5. Karin says:

I enjoyed the Jane Ashford book, quite entertaining and well written. The hero has a Mr. Spock vibe, always trying to be strictly logical but the heroine turns his world upside down. He doesn’t know what hit him. The interactions between her and the hero’s brothers were very funny, she starts giving them relationship advice, which turns out to be on the mark and solves all their issues, however the hero is flummoxed that she knows more about her brother’s personal lives than he does. There are no actual paranormal events, just hoaxes.

  6. Elle says:

I agree with @Karin. The Bargain is a well-written, thoughful historical romance between two very different people. It touches on class issues and mental illness while slowly developing the romance. The brothers were the best and might be getting their own stories too. You learn more about the oldest brother in Heir to the Duke, just released in Jan 2016.

  7. MissyLaLa says:

The cover of the Anne Stuart book makes me think a Saw-the-Lady-in-Half magic trick went wrong. O.o
