  • The Bees

    The Bees by Laline Paull

RECOMMENDEDThe Bees by Laline Paull is $1.99 at select vendors! I LOVED this book. Margaret Atwood, whom I worship like a saint, tweeted about the book, calling it a mix between a Cinderella story and an Arthurian tale. I knew I had to read it. On GoodReads, I gave it a 4-star rating and a mini review:

This book was unlike anything I’ve read before, and I found it both unique and mesmerizing. However, the last fifty pages seemed to lack the care and craft of the ones before it. The ending was over in a rush and I felt Flora’s story should have continued on with more detail. Regardless, I was impressed with Paull’s storytelling and her ability to make bee life interesting.

Also, it’s legitimately about bees. Like bees that think and talk and exist in their strange bee society. It so weird, but so good. That’s all I can say.

The Handmaid’s Tale meets The Hunger Games in this brilliantly imagined debut set in an ancient culture where only the queen may breed and deformity means death.

Flora 717 is a sanitation worker, a member of the lowest caste in her orchard hive where work and sacrifice are the highest virtues and worship of the beloved Queen the only religion. But Flora is not like other bees. With circumstances threatening the hive’s survival, her curiosity is regarded as a dangerous flaw but her courage and strength are an asset. She is allowed to feed the newborns in the royal nursery and then to become a forager, flying alone and free to collect pollen. She also finds her way into the Queen’s inner sanctum, where she discovers mysteries about the hive that are both profound and ominous.

But when Flora breaks the most sacred law of all—daring to challenge the Queen’s fertility—enemies abound, from the fearsome fertility police who enforce the strict social hierarchy to the high priestesses jealously wedded to power. Her deepest instincts to serve and sacrifice are now overshadowed by an even deeper desire, a fierce maternal love that will bring her into conflict with her conscience, her heart, her society—and lead her to unthinkable deeds.

Thrilling, suspenseful and spectacularly imaginative, The Bees gives us a dazzling young heroine and will change forever the way you look at the world outside your window.

  • Heat Exchange

    Heat Exchange by Shannon Stacey

Heat Exchange by Shannon Stacey is 99c! If the cover is any indication, firefighters await in this contemporary romance. It also features the “off limits best friend’s sister” trope, if that’s your catnip. Sarah also picked it for August’s Hide Your Wallet post. Some readers weren’t a fan of the heroine and found her to be self-centered, while others found it to be a great start to Stacey’s new Boston Fire series. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Lydia Kincaid’s shipping back to Boston, but she’s not happy about it. She left to get away from the firefighting community—her father was a firefighter, her brother’s a firefighter and, more important, her ex is a firefighter. But family is number one, and her father needs her help running the pub he bought when he retired. Soon, Lydia finds it hard to resist the familiar comfort and routine, and even harder to resist her brother’s handsome friend Aidan.

Aidan Hunt is a firefighter because of the Kincaid family. He’s had the hots for Lydia for years, but if ever a woman was off-limits to him, it’s her. Aside from being his mentor’s daughter, she’s his best friend’s sister. The ex-wife of a fellow firefighter. But his plan to play it cool until she leaves town again fails, and soon he and Lydia have crossed a line they can’t uncross.

As Aidan and Lydia’s flirtation turns into something more serious, Lydia knows she should be planning her escape. Being a firefighter’s wife was the hardest thing she’s ever done, and she doesn’t know if she has the strength to do it again. Aidan can’t imagine walking away from Boston Fire—even for Lydia. The job and the brotherhood are his life; but if he wants Lydia in it, he’ll have to decide who’s first in his heart.

  • The Viscount Who Loved Me

The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn

The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn is $1.99!. This is book 2 of the Bridgerton series, and is the story of Anthony, the viscount mentioned in the title. Anthony decides to marry a woman he deems suitable, and then finds himself terribly attracted to her sister, Kate. Sarah gave this book a B+:

I do like Kate and I like Anthony, and while the denouement and resolution of the book is a let-down, the scenes with Kate and Anthony, and with Anthony’s family, are marvelous and wonderful and make me, the reader, a happy happy re-reader.

1814 promises to be another eventful season, but not, This Author believes, for Anthony Bridgerton, London’s most elusive bachelor, who has shown no indication that he plans to marry. And in all truth, why should he? When it comes to playing the consummate rake, nobody does it better…

–Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers, April 1814

But this time the gossip columnists have it wrong. Anthony Bridgerton hasn’t just decided to marry–he’s even chosen a wife! The only obstacle is his intended’s older sister, Kate Sheffield–the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom. The spirited schemer is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal, but when he closes his eyes at night, Kate’s the woman haunting his increasingly erotic dreams…

Contrary to popular belief, Kate is quite sure that reformed rakes do not make the best husbands–and Anthony Bridgerton is the most wicked rogue of them all. • The Perfect Play

The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton

The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton is $3.99, which is a big deal because her books are rarely on sale! This is her first book in her sports contemporary Play by Play series and I’ve been very vocal about my love for the series in general. I also have a poster of one of her book covers because hot damn! I found this book to be a little slow and the hero is a bit too perfect at times. But for me, this was a decent start to a series that kept getting better and better.

From the national bestselling author of Riding the Night comes an erotic story about love and the games people play.

The last thing event planner Tara Lincoln needs is the jet-set lifestyle of a football pro like Mick Riley; even though their steamy and passionate one-night stand proved that Mick is an all-star-both on the field and in the bedroom.

Tara played the game of love once and lost big, and she doesn’t intend to put herself out there again, especially with a certified heartbreaker. But when Mick sets his mind to win, nothing will stop him. And he has the perfect play in mind to catch this sultry vixen.

*sigh* One day the good sales will happen in Australia. One day.

  2. Lisa J says:

Thanks for including The Perfect Play. I have wanted to read it, but the cost was a bit much for my budget. I could get the e-book and audio version for less than the book by itself. WIN!

  3. Texas Book Lover says:

The Perfect Play was the first book I ever bought just for the cover. I have never regretted it! Quick, snatch it up while it’s marked down!

  4. I really enjoy the Boston Fire series – the second one, with the older couple who are just so nice I want them to live next door – I loved it. And I can’t wait for the third one with the FEMALE FIREFIGHTER who outranks the guys … I think it’s in two weeks. That has me all over it.

And re Australia: can you buy them directly from the Carina website on sale? The website ha 99 cents too (and a handful of Carina books for free, FYI).

  5. Pamala says:

ARGH! I’ve been watching for THE BEES to go on sale forever and it must’ve been a one day event because it’s back up to $10.99 for the ebook 🙁 *sigh* I have to pay closer attention to the sales alerts.

I love how unsnobby Margaret Atwood is about writing. (And her writing. And her politics). I remember listening to an interview where she talked about how she would have definitely started her career writing vampire fanfic on wattpad if it had been around back then.

I’ll definitely be checking out The Bees.
