  • Shades of Milk and Honey

Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal

Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal is $4.99! This is the first book in the Glamourist Histories series and these book are rarely on sale, but throw up some praise for the discount gods because the next three books are also $4.99! This book was also a Nebula nominee and an nominee for the RT Reviewers’ Choice Award in the fantasy category. The book is often compared to Jane Austen, but with fantasy thrown in. Some readers agree with this assessment, while others are affronted by it. For those who have read it, what camp are you in?

Shades of Milk and Honey is an intimate portrait of Jane Ellsworth, a woman ahead of her time in a world where the manipulation of glamour is considered an essential skill for a lady of quality. But despite the prevalence of magic in everyday life, other aspects of Dorchester’s society are not that different: Jane and her sister Melody’s lives still revolve around vying for the attentions of eligible men.

Jane resists this fate, and rightly so: while her skill with glamour is remarkable, it is her sister who is fair of face, and therefore wins the lion’s share of the attention. At the ripe old age of twenty-eight, Jane has resigned herself to being invisible forever. But when her family’s honor is threatened, she finds that she must push her skills to the limit in order to set things right–and, in the process, accidentally wanders into a love story of her own.

  • Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress

Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress by Theresa Romain

RECOMMENDED: Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress by Theresa Roman is $1.99! Redheadedgirl reviewed the book and gave it an A:

I really enjoyed everything about this book. The characters were fascinating and not the standard duke (I don’t have anything against the standard duke, mind, but I like reading about the 99%, too). I loved Joss’ identity issues, and the setting made me so happy. I also really liked that there wasn’t an evil villain in the background twirling his mustache and cackling. This was a delight.

    One good proposition deserves another…

Heiress Augusta Meredith can’t help herself—she stirs up gossip wherever she goes. A stranger to Bath society, she pretends to be a charming young widow, until sardonic, darkly handsome Joss Everett arrives from London and uncovers her charade.

Augusta persuades Joss to keep her secret in exchange for a secret of his own. Weaving their way through the treacherous pitfalls of a polite world only too eager to expose and condemn them, they begin to see that being true to themselves is not so bad…as long as they’re true to each other…

  • A Winter Wedding

A Winter Wedding by Amanda Forester

A Winter Wedding by Amanda Forester is $1.99! This is a historical romance with a fake relationship. The heroine is a matchmaker trying to help the hero, while the hero is more preoccupied with catching a spy. However, many readers have mixed feelings about this romance: the suspenseful aspects were great, but the romance felt weak. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Miss Penelope Rose, exclusive matchmaker to London’s elite, successfully creates love for everyone but herself. Her toughest client yet, the sexy Duke of Marchford, has commissioned her to find him a bride. But he’s more interested in tracking down a spy, and she’s in no hurry to speed up the process…

When the fate of England falls in the Duke’s hands, he enlists Penelope for a new plan—they announce a sham engagement in order to flush out the traitor. But as the stakes get more deadly, and their feelings more real, will they discover that love is the most dangerous plot of them all?

  • One Tempting Proposal

One Tempting Proposal by Christy Carlyle

One Tempting Proposal by Christy Carlyle is $1.99! This is a historical romance and the second book in the Accidental Heirs series. The first book is also on sale for $1.99! This book just came out a week or two ago and features a marriage of convenience. There are only a few reviews so far on Goodreads and most of them mention how great the pacing is. Have you read this one?

Becoming engaged? Simple. Resisting temptation? Impossible.

Sebastian Fennick, the newest Duke of Wrexford, prefers the straightforwardness of mathematics to romantic nonsense. When he meets Lady Katherine Adderly at the first ball of the season, he finds her as alluring as she is disagreeable. His title may now require him to marry, but Sebastian can’t think of anyone less fit to be his wife, even if he can’t get her out of his mind.

After five seasons of snubbing suitors and making small talk, Lady Kitty has seen all the ton has to offer…and she’s not impressed. But when Kitty’s overbearing father demands she must marry before her beloved younger sister can, she proposes a plan to the handsome duke. Kitty’s schemes always seem to backfire, but she knows this one can’t go wrong. After all, she’s not the least bit tempted by Sebastian, is she?

Shades of Milk and Honey: I wasn’t offended by anything, but I thought it was dull. It was a DNF because nothing happened, and it kept on not happening.

  2. Lostshadows says:

I loved Shades of Milk and Honey, but I, embarrassingly, haven’t read any Austin, yet. (Hopefully sooner than HHGttG, which I’ve been meaning to for over 30 years.)

It is a bit slow and the only real action happens right at the end, but I liked spending time with the characters and watching the set up.

  5. Hyacinths says:

I enjoyed Shades of Milk & Honey and the rest of the Glamourist Histories very much. I understand the Austen comparisons–it’s Austen’s era and class of characters, and there’s much to-do about how to properly and profitably marry off daughters. But it’s not a direct imitator of Austen or a P&P knockoff, and the author is entertainingly creative in how she adds magic (“glamour”) to the desirable accomplishments of proper young ladies.

The pace is gentle, and the development of the romance gradual, so it may be too slow-moving for some. But I loved the magical world-building and the “plain Jane” protagonist, even if I did feel she went around bemoaning her plainness a bit too much. And it was splendid to see a couple whose attraction is a meeting of minds and interests, not just lust.

When, when will I learn not to read things that are compared to Jane Austen? Checked it out of the library today, and made myself finish it as a punishment for for being so naive.
    Team affronted.

  7. garlicknitter says:

Here’s the thing about comparing Shades of Milk and Honey to anything Jane Austen wrote: Miss Austen’s books are funny. I really want to like Mary Robinette Kowal’s work because she sounds like a fabulous person and she does write well, but that book wasn’t funny. Maybe the next one is better, or maybe I should try to read it without expecting much in the way of humor.
