  • Love in the Time of Scandal

Love in the Time of Scandal by Caroline Linden

Love in the Time of Scandal by Caroline Linden is $1.99! This is a historical romance and was mentioned on a previous podcast with Redheadedgirl, who used this book as a palate cleanser after reading Grey. This has a marriage of convenience element to it, and readers loved watching the hero and heroine come to terms with their arrangement. However, others felt differently about the main couple, finding the heroine too stubborn. Have you read this one?

USA Today bestselling author Caroline Linden’s third novel in her Scandalous series brings together a feisty heiress, a notorious rake, and a shocking book that could bring one woman the utmost despair— or the greatest pleasure

Penelope Weston does not like Benedict Lennox, Lord Atherton. He may be the suave and charming heir to an earl, as well as the most handsome man on earth, but she can’t forget how he abandoned a friend in need— nor how he once courted her sister, Abigail. He’s the last man she would ever marry. If only she didn’t feel so attracted to the arrogant scoundrel . . .

Once upon a time, Benedict thought he and Penelope got along rather well. Though he needs a wealthy bride to escape his cruel father’s control, spirited Penelope just doesn’t suit his plans for a model marriage—until a good deed goes awry, and scandalous rumors link his name to Penelope’s. She might not be the quiet, sensible wife he thought he wanted, but she is beautiful . . . beguiling . . . and far more passionate than he ever imagined. Can a marriage begun in scandal become a love match, too?

  • The Perils of Pleasure

The Perils of Pleasure by Julie Anne Long

RECOMMENDED: The Perils of Pleasure by Julie Anne Long is $1.99 right now at most vendors. This is the first Pennyroyal Green book, which is a much-loved bestselling historical series. It’s a mix of small town romance set in the Regency but outside of London, and the two rival families and the setting make for some terrific reading. This book has a 3.7 star average on GR, and the series gets better and better with each book.

    A rescued rogue . . .

Scandal has rocked the city of London. Colin Eversea, a handsome, reckless unapologetic rogue is sentenced to hang for murder and, inconveniently for him, the only witness to the crime disappears. Then again, throughout history, the Everseas have always managed to cheat fate in style: Colin is snatched from the gallows by a beautiful, clever mercenary.

    A captivating captor. . .

Cool-headed, daring Madeleine Greenway is immune to Colin’s vaunted charm. Her mission is not to rescue Colin but to kidnap him, and to be paid handsomely for it. But when it becomes clear that whoever wants Colin alive wants Madeline dead, the two become uneasy allies in a deadly race for truth. Together, they’ll face great danger—and a passion neither can resist.

  • All the Ways to Ruin a Rogue

All the Ways to Ruin a Rogue by Sophie Jordan

All the Ways to Ruin a Rogue by Sophie Jordan is $1.99! This has the ol’ “heroine is the sister of the hero’s best friend” trope. Apparently, the heroine also throws punch in the hero’s face, which I’m all about. Some readers had mixed feelings about the chemistry between the main couple. Some found the banter to be fiery and playful, while others thought it was just plan mean at times. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

There was once a lady who loathed a lord…

Lady Aurelia hasn’t always hated Max, Viscount Camden, her brother’s best friend. In fact, as a besotted girl, she thrived under his kind attention – sure that he was the most noble and handsome man in the land. Until her young heart discovered what manner of rogue he really was. Now, though she enjoys nothing more than getting on his last nerve, she can’t deny Max drives her to distraction—even if she tries to pretend otherwise.

…and a lord who was confounded by a lady.

Max cannot recall a time when Aurelia did not vex him. If she was not his friend’s sister, he would stay far away from the infuriating vixen. Unfortunately, they are always thrown together. At parties and family gatherings…she is always there. Infuriating him, tossing punch in his face, driving him mad…until one night, she goes too far and he retaliates in the only way he can: with a kiss that changes everything.

  • A Gentleman Undone

A Gentleman Undone by Cecilia Grant

A Gentleman Undone by Cecilia Grant is 99c! And thanks to Reader Pat for bringing it to our attention. This book was part of the 2013 DABWAHA tournament and was recommended by Vasha in the comments section of my review of Kresley Cole’s The Master as we discussed the roles of escort/courtesan characters in romance:

The heroine is a for-real courtesan of considerable experience, who likes the job reasonably well, and has enjoyable sex with someone other than the hero during the book; and the hero is, if not exactly happy about it, at least accepting and matter-of-fact.

    Have you read it?

A seductive beauty turns the tables on a gentleman gaming for the guiltiest of pleasures in this rich and sensual Regency romance from beloved newcomer Cecilia Grant.

Lydia Slaughter understands the games men play—both in and out of the bedroom. Not afraid to bend the rules to suit her needs, she fleeces Will Blackshear outright. The Waterloo hero had his own daring agenda for the gaming tables of London’s gentlemen’s clubs. But now he antes up for a wager of wits and desire with Lydia, the streetwise temptress who keeps him at arm’s length.

A kept woman in desperate straits, Lydia has a sharp mind and a head for numbers. She gambles on the sly, hoping to win enough to claim her independence. An alliance with Will at the tables may be a winning proposition for them both. But the arrangement involves dicey odds with rising stakes, sweetened with unspoken promise of fleshly delights. And any sleight of hand could find their hearts betting on something neither can afford to risk: love.

  1. Julia aka mizzelle says:

Well, that’s impressive (or something) — I already own three of the four. I’m still seeing whether I liked the first of Sophie Jordan’s series.

  2. Vasha says:

A Gentleman Undone is near the top of the list for my favorite historical romance of all time. It is quite emotionally heavy though, just as an alert.

  3. LauraL says:

I agree with Vasha on A Gentleman Undone. Emotionally heavy and maybe a bit gritty at times.

I enjoyed All the Ways to Ruin a Rogue, but I’m a sucker for Regency banter.

  4. Cordy (not stuck in spam filter sub-type) says:

Cecilia Grant is a genius, “A Gentleman Undone” is really, really good. I feel resistant to anyone complaining about it (not that anyone here is, but you know) – to me, Grant uses historical backdrops to really explore the tensions implied by a certain time and a certain culture, so this is a world where women are constrained, men have more freedom (but are also trapped in their class’ mores), and actions have consequences. I personally love all of that, but I also dislike books that are mega-fluffy, where dukes are always marrying their maids and everyone is anachronistically cool, so I think this is really a matter of how your tastes skew.

Grant is a fantastic prose stylist and her characters are 100% true to who they are established to be. Just so good. READ IT YOU GUYS.

  5. kkw says:

Regency romance is my jam, I’ve read all of these.
The Linden book isn’t my favorite of hers, but I find all her books well worth reading.
I drank too much Pennyroyal Green and now the thought of it makes me vaguely queasy, which is obviously entirely my fault for having no self control, fine, but I maintain these books should come with a warning.
That whole Grant series is almost unbearably good. Love. If you can only afford one of these deals that’s the one.

  6. Cecilia says:

Do you have any idea when Cecilia Grant’s new book will be available? (Or if she is writing something new, that’s it.)

  7. DonnaMarie says:

Adding my big thumbs up for any and all things Cecilia Grant, who also wrote one of the best Christmas stories ever, A Christmas Gone Perfectly Wrong, about the eldest, staidest of the Blackshear siblings. I’ll be rereading it on December 24 before bed. Some people go for the traditional ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas, but I’ll take me some Andrew Blackshear for my long winters nap. If it sounds familiar, I think it got a few dozen recs in the holiday reading post.

  8. LauraL says:

@DonnaMarie – I may steal your idea and save my re-read A Christmas Gone Perfectly Wrongfor Christmas Eve. It’s currently free at Amazon for those who have not read this holiday treat!

  9. kkw says:

Xmas gone perfectly wrong is also free for nooks!

  10. marjorie says:

I too have read three of the four (I too haven’t read the Sophie Jordan). Absolutely agree with kkw that the Grant is really good and the Linden isn’t her best but still worth reading. But I adored The Perils of Pleasure, despite not being a huge fan of the Pennyroyal Green series. I think it’s mega-uneven; this book was a major high point for me. (The others I liked were #6, How the Marquess Was Won, and #8, It Happened at Midnight. Haven’t read the newest one. The ones I liked I really, really liked, so I keep going back like a rat pushing a lever-pellet.)

  11. Suzanne says:

Grrr! I always seem to miss the good sales, unless the books are not on sale in Canada, or was a “one-day-only-sale”. Pity–I would have liked to have added Linden and Jordan to my reading list. Also, agree with other about Grant–her books are re-reads for me.
