  • A Night to Surrender

A Night to Surrender by Tessa Dare

A Night to Surrender by Tessa Dare is $1.99! This is the very first book in the Spindle Cove series and was reviewed in a previous RITA© Reader Challenge.

Reader Kelly gave it an A-:

I really enjoyed this book!  I laughed out loud many times at some of the tiniest details, such as a lamb named Dinner that was still living at the end of the story.  I loved the running joke on “Mrs. Worthington’s Wisdom” – a book that was filled with anything but wisdom on what is proper for a lady to do or say or not do or say.

Reader HarperGray gave it a C+:

Tessa Dare writes some of the most humorously appealing prose that I have read in a long time. Inner monologues and personal observations are somehow both true to life and witty, dialogue is full of banter, and sheep get bombed.

Then why, oh why, is there so little chemistry between Susanna and Bram?

Spindle Cove is the destination of choice for certain types of well-bred young ladies: the painfully shy, young wives disenchanted with matrimony, and young girls too enchanted with the wrong men; it is a haven for those who live there.

Victor Bramwell, the new Earl of Rycliff, knows he doesn’t belong here. So far as he can tell, there’s nothing in this place but spinsters . . .and sheep. But he has no choice, he has orders to gather a militia. It’s a simple mission, made complicated by the spirited, exquisite Susanna Finch–a woman who is determined to save her personal utopia from the invasion of Bram’s makeshift army.

Susanna has no use for aggravating men; Bram has sworn off interfering women. The scene is set for an epic battle; but who can be named the winner when both have so much to lose?

  • Blame It on Bath

Blame It on Bath by Caroline Linden

Blame It on Bath by Caroline Linden is $2.99! This is a historical romance with a bit of a marriage of convenience trope. While readers seemed to love the chemistry between the hero and heroine of the book, they wished that more of the book went toward solving the mystery of the plot. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Gerard de Lacey is determined to find the man who tried to blackmail his late father, both to stop the blackmail and to discover—and dispose of—any evidence the villain has about his father’s clandestine first marriage. If that proof is made public, it could prove Gerard and his brothers illegitimate, and strip them of their inheritance. And just in case, Gerard intends to find himself a wealthy bride. One way or another, he’s not going to be left destitute. But he’s not expecting a rich widow to find him and ask him to marry her.

Katherine Howe’s first marriage was one of dreary duty, arranged by her wealthy father to a penniless lord. Now that she’s being pressured to marry her late husband’s heir, she’s desperately in search of a better option. Gerard de Lacey, with his sinful good looks, charming manner, and looming scandal fits her needs perfectly. The fact that she’s nursed a secret affection for him for years only makes it better—and worse. Because Gerard will marry her, for her fortune—but will he love her for herself, as she loves him?

  • Wicked in Your Arms

Wicked in Your Arms by Sophie Jordan

Wicked in Your Arms by Sophie Jordan is $2.99! This is the first book in her historical romance Forgotten Princesses and features a romance between a hero and heroine with class differences. Readers loved the banter and action between the main characters, but felt like some of the plot events came out of left field. Also, if you’re looking to binge on more Sophie Jordan, book one in two of her other series are also on saleA Good Debutante’s Guide to Ruin and Sins of a Wicked Duke.

One of the most notoriously eligible bachelors in Europe is finally ready to marry . . .

For fiercely independent Grier Hadley, being the illegitimate daughter of one of London’s most unsavory characters has only one advantage: an enormous, ill-gotten dowry.

Prince Sevastian Maksimi knows where his duty lies: he must find a well-bred young lady—one with a considerable fortune to her name—wed her promptly, and get to the business of producing an heir.

The last thing Grier needs is some unattainable prince curling her toes with his smoldering glances and wicked suggestions. As far as Sev is concerned, she lacks the breeding to become a princess. And yet one kiss from this arresting female is all it takes for him to realize that anyone else in his arms would be unthinkable . . .

  • An English Bride in Scotland

An English Bride in Scotland by Lynsay Sands

An English Bride in Scotland by Lynsay Sands is $2.99! The hero is originally arranged to be married to the heroine’s sister, but his wife-to-be elopes with someone else.

I must say, though it’s not faborable, this is one of my favorite Goodreads reviews:

Alternate title: An English Bride (and her tits) in Scotland.

Seriously, with all the hullabaloo made over Annabel’s boobs, they deserve a place in the title. In fact, I’m pretty sure her legendary bosom has more words devoted to their bounteousness than some supporting characters within the book.

Main plot: who’s trying to hurt Annabel?

Subplot: HOW TO CONTAIN THESE TITS

However, the book has a 3.9-star rating, with many readers praising how the hero and heroine eventually come to love each other.

The first in a new historical series set in the Highlands of Scotland, from Lynsay Sands, the New York Times bestselling author of the Argeneau vampire series and countless historical romances.

Annabel was about to take the veil to become a nun when her mother suddenly arrives at the Abbey to take her home… so that she can marry the Scottish laird who is betrothed to her runaway sister! She knows nothing about being a wife, nothing about how to run a household, and definitely nothing about the marriage bed!

But from the moment Ross MacKay sets eyes on Annabel, he is taken with his shy sweet bride… and the fact that she’s blessed with lush curves only makes him utter his own prayers of thanks. But when an enemy endangers her life, he’ll move the Highlands themselves to save her. For though Annabel’s not the bride he planned for, she’s the only woman he desires…

  1. Olivia says:

“Once Upon a Wedding Night” by Sophie Jordan is also on sale, $1.99, and appears to be another 1st in a series

  2. Hannah says:

Destiny’s Embrace by Beverly Jenkins is 2.99 also. I tried to convince my book club members to read it but alas, one was scared off by the potential steamy scenes. Oh well, I’ll read it anyway becuase I’ve heard so many good things about her books. I just bought Indigo also because it was featured on the NPR list.

  3. Mara says:

I need to read this Lynsay Sands book… Tits as subplot? Story of my life as a busty lady. If only I could find a bare-chested laird to go with…

  4. LauraL says:

Love the Spindle Cove series and A Night to Surrender is my favorite, so it’s time to buy the ebook.

I remember reading An English Bride in Scotland and her girls *are* like two more characters in the story!

  5. kitkat9000 says:

@Hannah: Forgive me, but I’m curious…may I ask what types of books your club usually reads if the potential for steamy love scenes scared her off?

  6. Hannah says:

@kitkat9000 I don’t think any Avon romances are all that explicit actually, but it’s hard to get Muggles (i.e. non-romance readers) to consider one of “those books” sometimes. My book club chooses a wide variety of titles, from classic literature to YA. We just discussed The Girl on the Train and now are reading Everything,Everything by Nicola Yoon. I convinced them to try a romance novel last winter after one member read the article on romance in EW. I picked Scandal by Carolyn Jewel which I had wanted to read for a while. As an aficionado of historical romance I enjoyed reading Scandal, but it was very slow-paced and probably not a good intro to the genre.

  7. Peg says:

It Happened at the Fair by Deeanna Gist is $1.99 today at Amazon. (& thanks so much for the daily deal postings!)

  8. kitkat9000 says:

Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

I’ve never stayed with a book club as the ones around me always seemed inclined to choose books I wouldn’t read on a bet. Or pain of death. Their selections seemed to be based on the perceived prestige, i.e. literary merit, and the bragging rights associated with them. Can you tell I was scarred?

I haven’t looked into any in ages though so things may have changed.

I prefer to read for enjoyment not intensive critical analysis. Not that I’m incapable, simply uninterested. Had more than enough of that in AP English. My favorites include anything with humor, mysteries, historical & contemporary romance, erotica, biographies and history. Most of which doesn’t seem to be Book Club fodder.

  9. Diana says:

I really want to read an “English Bride” now for the secondary boob characters. Still, I’ve had such scarring reading experiences with Lynsay Sands’s historicals, I don’t know if I’m brave enough to try.

And…side note… I also joined a book club once. All we read were classics (Thomas Hardy GAG) and the new trendy, Lit Fic books. It was not very fun.

  10. Tami says:

I’m no font wonk, but…whoa, is Avon’s historical branding game consistent.

  11. Tam says:

Robin McKinley’s ‘Sunshine’ is $1.99 for the Kindle at the moment.
