  • Dark Skye

    Dark Skye by Kresley Cole

RECOMMENDED: Dark Skye by Kresley Cole is $1.99! This means we’re officially caught up on the cover redesigns. This is a paranormal romance and my favorite of the series. I waited ages for Thronos and Lanthe’s story and I wound up giving the book an A- grade:

The book was worth the wait. Truly. The themes of religion fit nicely into the character differences and I was really pulling for Lanthe and Thronos to make important compromises for the benefit of their relationship. I also thought it was a nice touch that Lanthe’s abilities grew more powerful and she became more confident in using them when she was around Thronos, a sign that being with the right person can make you stronger.

    Eternal Obsession
As a boy, Thronos, prince of Skye Hall, loved Lanthe, a mischievous Sorceri girl who made him question everything about his Vrekener clan. But when the two got caught in the middle of their families’ war, tragedy struck, leaving Thronos and Lanthe bitter enemies. Though centuries have passed, nothing can cool his seething need for the beautiful enchantress who scarred his body—and left an even deeper impression on his soul.

    Endless Yearning
Lanthe, a once-formidable sorceress struggling to reclaim her gifts, searches for love and acceptance with all the wrong immortal suitors. But she’s never forgotten Thronos, the magnificent silver-eyed boy who protected her until she was ripped from the shelter of his arms. One harrowing night changed everything between them. Now he’s a notorious warlord with a blood vendetta against Lanthe, hunting her relentlessly.

Can the heat of desire burn brighter than vengeance?
With their families locked in conflict and battles raging all around them, will Thronos and Lanthe succumb to the brutal chaos that threatens everything they cherish? Or will the fragile bond they formed so long ago spark a passion strong enough to withstand even the darkest doubts?

  • Sabriel

    Sabriel by Garth Nix

RECOMMENDED: Sabriel by Garth Nix is $1.99! Many of you were talking about the continuation of this series in a previous Hide Your Wallet post. For those who want to jump on the awesome train or want to convince a friend/family to jump on with you, the first book in the Abhorsen series can be snagged for less than $2! This young adult fantasy novel involves a girl, magic, a boarding school, and a quest to find her missing father. Some recent readers of the series found the material a little dated, but they seem to be in the minority as the book has over 100,000 ratings on GR with a 4.1-star rating overall.

Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny…

  • One Night More

One Night More by Mandy Baxter

One Night More by Mandy Baxter is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance with a little bit of romantic suspense. The heroine has a one night stand with a man who will later become her bodyguard. Talk about awkward. Some readers felt the heroine suffered from a case of TSTL, while others said the book reminded them of Julie James’ FBI/US Attorney series (which I think is quite the compliment). Anyone read this one? The second book is also on sale for $2.99!

Journalist Harper Allen still remembers the handsome stranger who saved from disaster—and the sizzling one-night stand that followed. Too bad he left without a word or a clue to his real identity . . .

Then, a year later, Harper comes face to face with the man when he’s assigned to hide her from a senator’s assassin. Galen Kelly hasn’t forgotten a single sensual minute of his night with Harper . . . or the fact that she betrayed him. With the FBI also on their trail, he has to pretend he’s never met her—or risk both their lives. But as danger closes in, Galen may not be able to protect himself from taking the biggest risk of all . . .

  • The Groom Says Yes

The Groom Says Yes by Cathy Maxwell

The Groom Says Yes by Cathy Maxwell is $1.99! This is the third book in the Brides of Wishmore historical romance series. Readers loved the mystery of the story and how the heroine and hero grow closer as she nurses him back to health. However, some readers felt the pacing was a little rushed. It has a 3.6-star rating on Goodreads.

New York Times bestselling author Cathy Maxwell continues her dazzling series, The Brides of Wishmore

He had a noose around his neck and a price on his head…

Sabrina Davidson, dutiful daughter, avowed spinster, thought she’d secured a place for herself in Aberfeldy society—until her hard-earned acceptance of her fate is challenged by the arrival of Cormac Enright, Earl of Ballin, trained physician, soldier of fortune, and convicted felon.

A prim and proper miss was the last thing he needed…

Mac is determined to clear his name, but first he has to find the man whose testimony sentenced him to a hangman’s noose. Of course, Robert Davidson is missing and protecting Mac is Davidson’s daughter, the most entrancing, frustrating, beguiling, stubborn woman Mac has ever met.

And it doesn’t help that he has already tasted her kisses. Or that he has found in her a passion for life and adventure to rival his own.

Mac has turned Sabrina’s world inside out—but what will happen when he leaves?

Or will the Groom Say Yes?

  1. Leah says:

Sabriel is very good, though I was initially hesitant to pick it up because I’d read Nix’s stuff before and didn’t personally care for his writing style. It drags a little in places, rushes through others, and the romance felt unnecessary and tacked on, but the world building is great, and I loved the plot and the characters. It felt like a Miyazaki film.

  2. LisaJo885 says:

Just a note on linking: the first three BN links took me to the paperback copy of the book, and when I clicked on the Nook version to purchase, the affiliate references were gone so I don’t know if you’ll be able to track those sales. The fourth book did link to the Nook version, and I saw the affiliate references when I made my purchase.

And yes, this means I bought all four books, even having read Sabriel before from the library.

  3. About “The Groom Says Yes,” One part of the plot really disturbs me. An Earl sentenced to hang? First of all, this is set in the Regency period and in that time period, peers were only ever tried by the House of Lords, not the common courts. Also peers were never hung, I am almost certain.

An Earl as a physician I can handle because I’ve not read the book and so I don’t know what his circumstances were like before he came into the title. But physician ***and*** soldier of fortune, aka a mercenary, is a lot harder to take.

Appearance of verisimilitude, don’t you know.

  4. carolinareader says:

Sabriel is beyond worth that price, one of my favorite series

  5. Mara says:

Ah, Sabriel… one of my favorite YA books when I actually was a YA. So good! And I love me some Kresley Cole…

  6. Eelsmum says:

Gloriamarie, this lack of verisimilitude bothers me too! I checked the kindle sample for “The Groom Says Yes”- apparently the earldom is an old Irish title with no money or viable property attached. He’s been arrested in Scotland, and hasn’t told anyone about his title because he doesn’t want the family name dragged through the mud. I don’t know if this helps with the “soldier of fortune” bit, but I can tolerate crazysauce much better than historical inaccuracy.

  7. Thank you, Eelsmum.

I believe we readers are called to use our critical thinking skills and demand the best from the authors who wish us to spend our money to buy their books.

Too many badly written books with egregious grammatical errors, historical inaccuracies of all sorts from anachronisms, getting the facts incorrect when they are ever so easily researched to putting modern vocabulary into centuries’ old mouths are getting five star reviews all over.

We have to stand up against this and demand better from authors. One way is to join street teams. I used to think of street teams as bribes for good reviews in exchange for free books but I’ve noticed that the other people on the street teams are beginning to share my concerns.

To many authors settle for Beta readers and spell check instead of employing professional editors. That’s another thing that really annoys me.

  8. RevMelinda says:

Gloriamarie, I so agree with you. Historical romances are my catnip but lately I’ve just been despairing about them. So many inaccuracies and anachronisms are just the start. The language is wrong, the plots are ridiculous and historically impossible, and the manners and sensibility are way too modern. I know not everyone cares about historical accuracy, but I do. Consequently I am reading much more science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and contemporary romance. I wonder if so many of these “pseudo-historical a” are being published now because the editors have no historical knowledge or sensibility, and thus don’t know any better? Or is it just because they will sell?

  9. RevMelinda, thank you. We the readers deserve better. We should demand more. I hope you review books and let people know when authors are lazy. I have no other word for it. They don’t don’t do their homework.

  10. Priya says:

Oh Thank you for the Kresley Cole Dark Skye! It was an instant buy for me at that price. I have been waiting to read this book and I just bought it. You made my day!

  11. Storyphile says:

I don’t know what is going on with the Kresley Cole sales in Canada, but I swear this is the fourth time that Lothaire and Shadow’s Claim have been on sale instead of whatever Immortals After Dark titles you USians get. Which would be fine, except I own them already!

Another fan of the Abhorsen books here.

  12. Liz V. says:

Ssshhhhiiiiiiiish kebab! I missed the MacRieve sale from Kresley Cole……maaaaan. Bummer … oh well. At least it was only 1 out of 15, that’s not too bad.

  13. Amanda says:

@Liz V: I believe they skipped over that one for right now! But keep your eyes peeled this month. 😛

  14. Tiffany says:

Is it bad that I picked up The Groom Says Yes because the dress looked almost historically accurate? As a longtime (15 or so years) researcher of eighteenth and early 19th century costume and fashion I tend to gravitate towards books with pretty dresses on the covers.

  15. Dee says:

Haven’t looked at the other titles, but just wanted to let other Canadians that “The Groom Says Yes” is also $1.99 on amazon.ca It doesn’t often happen that the sale prices are the same, even though I always, ALWAYS check with my hopes up.
