  • The Affair

    The Affair by Beth Kery

    Author: Beth Kery
Released: September 1, 2015 by Berkley
    Genre: , ,

Available for the first time as a complete novel—the serial from the New York Times bestselling author that explores the dynamics of power and sex between two people who set the rules of desire…only to shatter them.

When unconventional hospice nurse Emma Shore secured a new position at the Breakers, the sprawling mansion of enigmatic and dangerously handsome racecar billionaire Michael Montand, she had no idea how soon she’d be drawn into his darker sexual games—or that it would be her own fantasies that would hold her captive.

Michael knew he shouldn’t have engaged such an innocent woman to share in his desires. But strong sexual appetites and selfishness run in his blood.

From Michael’s luxurious lakeside home to the sun-drenched, sensual shores of the French Riviera, Emma submits again and again to his intoxicating power. But she knows there is only one way to protect her heart.

The affair will continue, but under her conditions: Only she can end it, and when it’s over, they will part and never speak again of the things they dared to do behind locked doors.

Elyse says: This was originally published as a serial which I don’t do (instant gratification only). Now that it’s being released in a single volume, I’m intrigued. The description of a nurse working at the estate of a reclusive billionaire sounds vaguely gothic. Also when you mention “darker sexual games” I have to check it out. Erotic Boggle anyone?

  • Begging for It

Begging for It by Lilah Pace

    Author: Lilah Pace
Released: September 1, 2015 by Berkley
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Asking for It #2

The provocative author of Asking for It once again explores the dark side of erotic obsession, and the secrets that make it as dangerous as it is irresistible.

Some secrets should only be shared in the dark.

Jonah and Vivienne’s erotic bond—living out raw scenarios of captivity and force—began as no-strings sex between strangers who shared the same desires. Now the intimacy between them is turning into love, but it’s a love built on fantasies so extreme that exploring them makes guilt inescapable. But the risks they’re taking are far more dangerous than they’d imagined.

A stalker is terrorizing the city, and one of Jonah’s ex-lovers names him as a potential suspect to the police. Standing by a man under suspicion could cost Vivienne everything. But when Jonah’s stepfather takes advantage of the scandal to seize control of the Marks family fortune, Vivienne is drawn into her lover’s broken family and twisted past. Only then will she learn how dark the truth really is…

Amanda says: C’mon, given how Redheadedgirl and I loved the first one, is it any surprise this makes our list?

  • The Paris Key

The Paris Key by Juliet Blackwell

    Author: Juliet Blackwell
Released: September 1, 2015 by NAL
    Genre:

An American in Paris navigates her family’s secret past and unlocks her own future, in this emotionally evocative novel byNew York Times bestselling author Juliet Blackwell.

As a girl, Genevieve Martin spent the happiest summer of her life in Paris, learning the delicate art of locksmithing at her uncle’s side. But since then, living back in the States, she has become more private, more subdued. She has been an observer of life rather than an active participant, holding herself back from those around her, including her soon-to-be-ex-husband.

Paris never really left Genevieve, and, as her marriage crumbles, she finds herself faced with an incredible opportunity: return to the magical city of her youth to take over her late uncle’s shop. But as she absorbs all that Parisian culture has to offer, she realizes the city also holds secrets about her family that could change her forever, and that locked doors can protect you or imprison you, depending on which side of them you stand.

Sarah says: I love books that allow or invite me to travel through the story – by which I mean I get to visit places that are far from where I am while I read. It’s part of the reason I love Laura Florand’s Amour et Chocolat series, for example. “Sense of place” is a bland term for it, but when I feel like I’m visiting a place intimately while reading a story, it makes me super, enormously happy.

Slaying Dragons by Sasha L. Miller

    Author: Sasha L. Miller
Released: September 2, 2015 by Less Than Three Press
    Genre: , , ,

Devi has about had it with mages. All she wants to do is her job, which is slaying the dragons that plague the country. She doesn’t have time or energy to spare for coddling or pandering to the fussy mages she keeps getting stuck with as partners. Unfortunately, her last mage was also a noble with clout, and Devi has the feeling her days as a Combatant are numbered.

Instead of reprimand or termination however, she winds up with a new assignment and a new partner: Noeme, who is competent, friendly, distractingly attractive—and far too good to be true.

Sarah says: I found this book after another NetGalley “DRAGONS” search, and am so curious. Devi is expected to slay dragons (which, not my favorite way of dealing with dragons but ok, I’m still in) but when she is teamed up with a woman named Noeme, things get complicated because attraction and also dragons.

The buzz of gold means warmth and life and home—until everything is ripped away by a man who wants to control her. Left with nothing, Lee disguises herself as a boy and takes to the trail across the country. Gold was discovered in California, and where else could such a magical girl find herself, find safety? Rae Carson, author of the acclaimed Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy, dazzles with this new fantasy that subverts both our own history and familiar fantasy tropes.

  • The Aeronaut’s Windlass

The Aeronaut’s Windlass by Jim Butcher

    Author: Jim Butcher
Released: September 29, 2015 by Roc
    Genre:
    Series: The Cinder Spires #1

Jim Butcher, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Dresden Files and the Codex Alera novels, conjures up a new series set in a fantastic world of noble families, steam-powered technology, and magic-wielding warriors…

Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls, aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace.

Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship, Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy’s shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is severely damaged in combat, leaving captain and crew grounded, Grimm is offered a proposition from the Spirearch of Albion—to join a team of agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring Predator to its fighting glory.

And even as Grimm undertakes this dangerous task, he will learn that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity’s ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake…

Elyse says: I take great pride in being Carrie’s pusher when it comes to the Dresden Files. I fully expect us to both be “too sick to work” when Butcher’s steampunk debut is released.

Carrie says: Author of the Dresden Files creates a steampunk world with talking cats? I’m in.

The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev

    Author: Sonali Dev
Released: September 29, 2015 by Kensington
    Genre: ,

Ria Parkar is Bollywood’s favorite Ice Princess–beautiful, poised, and scandal-proof–until one impulsive act threatens to expose her destructive past. Traveling home to Chicago for her cousin’s wedding offers a chance to diffuse the coming media storm and find solace in family, food, and outsized celebrations that are like one of her vibrant movies come to life. But it also means confronting Vikram Jathar.

Ria and Vikram spent childhood summers together, a world away from Ria’s exclusive boarding school in Mumbai. Their friendship grew seamlessly into love–until Ria made a shattering decision. As far as Vikram is concerned, Ria sold her soul for stardom and it’s taken him years to rebuild his life. But beneath his pent-up anger, their bond remains unchanged. Rich with details of modern Indian-American life, here is a warm, sexy, and witty story of love, family, and the difficult choices that arise in the name of both.

Sarah says: SO MUCH EXCITE. BUCKETS OF IT. EEEE! There’s a second chance at love story, plus a family wedding which means ALL THE FOOD PR0N. Plus when there’s chemistry between Dev’s characters, if A Bollywood Affair is any indication, the dialogue should be terrific. DID I MENTION EXCITEMENT?! BECAUSE I HAVE SOME.

Amanda says: Do you see that cover? DO YOU? It’s probably one of the most gorgeous covers I’ve seen in a long time. I’m also doing a Covers & Cocktails post to drink and celebrate this awesome book. Put this on your TBR list, STAT!

  • Forever Your Earl

    Author: Eva Leigh
Released: September 29, 2015 by Avon
    Genre: ,
Series: The Wicked Quills of London #1

Eva Leigh’s irresistible new series introduces the Wicked Quills of London: a group of bold, brilliant female writers whose spirited allure is beyond seductive…

Eleanor Hawke loves a good scandal. And readers of her successful gossip rag live for the exploits of her favorite subject: Daniel Balfour, the notorious Earl of Ashford. So when the earl himself marches into her office and invites her to experience his illicit pursuits firsthand, Eleanor is stunned. Gambling hells, phaeton races, masquerades . . . What more could a scandal writer want than a secret look into the life of this devilishly handsome rake?

Daniel has secrets, and if The Hawk’s Eye gets wind of them, a man’s life could be at stake. And what better way to distract a gossip than by feeding her the scandal she desperately craves? But Daniel never expected the sharp mind and biting wit of the beautiful writer, and their desire for each other threatens even his best-laid plans.

But when Eleanor learns the truth of his deception, Daniel will do anything to prove a romance between a commoner and an earl could really last forever.

Sarah says: Eva Leigh is Zoe Archer, and I love her writing. Plus, this new historical series is about women writers who are kicking ass in literary ways, and I’m all about this premise of the series, and of this book. The heroine owns and writes a gossip magazine, and the hero is the scandalous dude she writes about constantly. He shows up in her offices and challenges her to accompany him on a night out.

Elyse says: I’m seconding Sarah’s excitement here. The heroine runs a gossip tabloid? Yes please! I also heart Zoe Archer so I’m excited to read her as Eva Leigh.

“A Red-Rose Chain” – the 9th in Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series is out today (the 1st)! It’s on my Kindle now and, as soon as I’ve reread Book 8, it will be in my eyeballs!

“The Winter Crown” – the 2nd in Elizabeth Chadwick’s Eleanor of Aquitaine trilogy gets its U.S. release today (the 1st). I love all her medieval novels so I’m excited to read this.

“The Bollywood Bride” and the new Jim Butcher have me flailing over here!

  2. I LOVED The Bollywood Bride and I can’t wait for more people to read it so I can squeal with them. Read it read it read it.

  3. There go the retirement funds.

  4. DonnaMarie says:

As much as the thought of Jim Butcher steampunk tickles me, this week is all about the Singh. Nalini Singh. The latest Guild Hunter, Archangel’s Enigma, is about to land on my doorstep. All props to you Psy/Changling fans, but the Guild Hunter books are soooo much better. My feet are tingling with happy dance anticipation. Or maybe that’s the herniated disc in my lumbar spine… any way: NALINI SINGH!!!

  5. Lynnd says:

    My wallet is weeping.

Nalini Singh’s Archangel’s Enigma releases today and is on my reader. I am so excited to read Nassir’s story (and to find out just what he is)!

  6. Jen says:

I’m very interested in the Butcher book too! I’m also excited about the new Laura Griffin that comes out later in September.

  7. Katie says:

If you’re into horror and/or Lizzie Borden, book 2 of Cherie Priest’s Borden Dispatches, Chapelwood, comes out today. Maplecroft (Book 1) was amaaaaazing in a delightfully Lovecraftian way.

  8. Niki says:

I stopped in to recommend Seanan McGuire’s Red Rowe Chain. I think this is one of the best urban fantasy series out there (along with the Kate Daniels series, the Mercy Thompson series, and Diana Rowland’s White Trash Zombie series).

  9. Verity W says:

@Carrie – I’m halfway through The Shepherd’s Crown (came out in the UK and Commonwealth last week) and am desperately trying to force myself to Make It Last and Read It Slowly. Many tears have already been shed. But so far, it’s worth it.

  10. Tam says:

Waiting on Rose Red Chain to be dropped on my porch now. I agree entirely with the Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson analogies – those are the three paranormal series I’ve stuck with, along with Butcher. (I still haven’t read the last Rachel Morgan book though, after getting thoroughly bogged down and bored – that series really went off the boil at some point.)

The last Pratchett novel is also arriving today, although I almost hate to read it. How can there be a last Pratchett?! How can they all just – stop? It is wholly unfair.

  11. BetsyDub says:

I mark 2, maybe 3 releases a year in my calendar. This is one of them:

September 29th: The Legend of Lyon Redmond: Pennyroyal Green Series by Julie Anne Long

The build-up has been epic. What the hell happened between Lyon and Olivia already???Tell me!

Need to schedule my work-week now so that I have that day off.

  12. Emily says:

@Betsydub, I have been waiting for The Legend of Lyon Redmond all year! I am so excited to see how things work out with Lyon and Olivia. Luckily, I am on maternity leave so I will be planting myself on the couch with a baby and my kindle all day long on September 29.

@Tam – exactly my thoughts re Pratchett. And avoid avoid avoid any reviews – several UK ones gave away a MASSIVE spoiler in them.

  14. Ashley says:

I’m with Betsy. The last Pennyroyal Green book is what I’m looking forward to this month! I’ll probably need to read it all in one sitting.

  15. Kate says:

Goodreads just let me know of more from authors I’ve read!

“A Curious Beginning” (Sept 1) – the first in Deanna Raybourn’s Victoria Speedwell series. How could I have forgotten?? I love her books!

“Furiously Happy” (Sept 22) – Jenny Lawson’s new memoir. I’m excited for the audiobook

I’m totally pumped for “Chaplewood”, too! I’m not exactly sure why, the premise seems absolutely ridiculous, but “Maplecroft” managed to hook and terrify me all at once

  16. Olivia says:

DARK GHOST by Christine Feehan…course still haven’t read the last one that came out, but that just means I get TWO to read on vacation next week at the beach!!

  17. Susan says:

An umpteenth shout out for Seanan McGuire’s A Red-Rose Chain. I started reading it last night (and, when I’m done, will follow up with listening to the audio book per my usual). I love this series for so many reasons, just one of which is Toby’s character development through the course of the books. McGuire deserves *all* the love for maintaining excellence through nine books.

  18. garlicknitter says:

@Susan Does Toby get better at investigation over the course of the series? I so much want to love these books. I love Seanan McGuire’s other work that I’ve read. I love the worldbuilding in this series. But in the first two and a half books, Toby doesn’t seem to be a very good investigator. She can’t seem to figure out what questions to ask or where to look for clues, so she kind of runs around flailing until she bumps into something. If she gets past that tendency, I will embrace this series and love it to pieces, but in the meantime, it’s making me nuts when I can read it at all.

  19. Susan says:

@garlicknitter, I’d agree that that’s probably still the weakest element in the series. Toby does a lot of running back and forth. She’ll be tired and bleeding and goes all the way across town for something, and then remembers that she needs to drag herself all the way back for something she forgot about when she first set out. (That’s an oversimplification, but the gist of her technique.) She needs to do more thinking and less just flinging herself into danger. She (and certainly Tybalt) even says as much about herself–so at least she recognizes it and now just needs to do better. If that’s your sticking point, it may still bother you. 🙁 I only managed to get a few chapters in yesterday, so I’m not sure if that aspect has changed in this book or not. But I think she’s growing in other ways (her relationships, recognition of her powers, etc.). And I like how tenacious, loyal, and bound by her sense of duty and what’s right she is.

I bought the Pratchett book and am saving it. I also bought BEGGING FOR IT and OMG did I love it. I read the final 1/3 through my fingers because things got really intense but I loved the ending. I pre-ordered the last Pennyroyal book and can’t wait! Also, if you’ve not read Kate Meader’s MELTING POINT you should rush out right now and rectify that–M/M romance with a hot firefighter and a broody chef. I also bought Rebekah Purdy’s THE WINTER PEOPLE and am enjoying it so far. Obviously I’m going to be homeless soon if I don’t stop buying books 🙂

  21. OK, the link to add to Goodreads is seriously enabling my book addiction. Just added 4 more to my list. The YA horror cult one sounds super intriguing, and of course the next Bollywood book 🙂

  22. […] releases: Fiction Vixen (romance), Smart Bitches (romance), Dear Author (romance), Gizmodo (fantasy & scifi), and Tor.com […]
