Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy from Cole, Andrews, & More

  • Lothaire

    Lothaire

RECOMMENDED: Lothaire by Kresley Cole is $1.99! We’re in the home stretch with these new cover designs, and if you’ve been keeping up with the sales, you could own the entire series for less than $30. Depending on where you start counting, that’s either thirteen or fourteen titles.
I personally love this series and admittedly, I wasn’t sure about the heroine in this one being Lothaire’s mate, but she really grew on me. Any girl who sends her severed middle finger to a guy is a-okay in my book. The book was also reviewed for the 2013 RITA® Reader Challenge in the Paranormal Romance category. Reader Pam G gave it an A-:

I just want to note that I loved Lothaire both times I read it, and I expect that I’ll read it again.  My taste in urban fantasy/paranormal romance runs strongly to supernatural sex and violence heavily laced with humor, because without the humor, the sex and violence gets to be a yawn after awhile.  I would recommend Lothaire to any reader who enjoys mismatches made in heaven, edged dialogue, immortal angst and multi-leveled hilarity.

ALL FEAR THE ENEMY OF OLD

Driven by his insatiable need for revenge, Lothaire, the Lore’s most ruthless vampire, plots to seize the Horde’s crown. But bloodlust and torture have left him on the brink of madness—until he finds Elizabeth Peirce, the key to his victory. He captures the unique young mortal, intending to offer up her very soul in exchange for power, yet Elizabeth soothes his tormented mind and awakens within him emotions Lothaire believed he could no longer experience.

A DEADLY FORCE DWELLS WITHIN HER

Growing up in desperate poverty, Ellie Peirce yearned for a better life, never imagining she’d be convicted of murder—or that an evil immortal would abduct her from death row. But Lothaire is no savior, as he himself plans to sacrifice Ellie in one month’s time. And yet the vampire seems to ache for her touch, showering her with wealth and sexual pleasure. In a bid to save her soul, Ellie surrenders her body to the wicked vampire, while vowing to protect her heart.

    CENTURIES OF COLD INDIFFERENCE SHATTERED

Elizabeth tempts Lothaire beyond reason, as only his fated mate could. As the month draws to a close, he must choose between a millennia-old blood vendetta and his irresistible prisoner. Will Lothaire succumb to the miseries of his past…or risk everything for a future with her?

  • Shadow’s Claim

    Shadow’s Claim

Shadow’s Claim by Kresley Cole is $1.99! This is technically part of the Immortals After Dark series, and book one of the spin-off Dacians series. To be honest, I’m not sure if the spin-off was well-received or not because I haven’t heard any rumblings of a book two. It was also nominated in the Paranormal Romance category during the 2013 RITAs. Reader Pam G. also reviewed this one for the RITA® Reader Challenge, giving it a C+:

Shadow’s Claim has most of the elements readers relish in the Immortals After Dark series: skillful writing, powerful characters, bawdy humor, excellent fight scenes, vulgar language, and steamy sex.

What it lacks, for this reader at any rate, is a truly engaging hero and heroine.  While their mutual whininess was somewhat justified by the crappy things that happened to them, and their story was believably developed and reached a satisfying HEA, as characters they just didn’t appeal to me.  They were so wet, and not just with blood and sex gravy.

Shadow’s Claim features Prince Trehan, a ruthless master assassin who will do anything to possess Bettina, his beautiful sorceress mate, even compete for her hand in a blood-sport tournament— to the death.

    HE WON’T BE DENIED

Trehan Daciano, known as the Prince of Shadows, has spent his life serving his people—striking in the night, quietly executing any threat to their realm. The coldly disciplined swordsman has never desired anything for himself—until he beholds Bettina, the sheltered ward of two of the Lore’s most fearsome villains.

    SHE’S BOUND TO ANOTHER

Desperate to earn her guardians’ approval after a life-shattering mistake, young Bettina has no choice but to marry whichever suitor prevails—even though she’s lost her heart to another. Yet one lethal competitor, a mysterious cloaked swordsman, invades her dreams, tempting her with forbidden pleasure.

A BATTLE FOR HER BODY AND SOUL

Even if Trehan can survive the punishing contests to claim her as his wife, the true battle for Bettina’s heart is yet to come. And unleashing a millennium’s worth of savage need will either frighten his Bride away—or stoke Bettina’s own desires to a fever pitch. . . .

  • Burn for Me

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews is still $1.99! Burn for Me is the first book in the Hidden Legacy series, and is an urban fantasy/billionaire story with magic, suspense, and a 4.4-star rating from readers on GoodReads. For those who remember, this book made it to the finals in this year’s DABWAHA tournament, and it was beaten by another Ilona Andrews title – Magic Breaks ( A | BN | K | G | ARe | iB | Au )

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand-new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire . . .

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile situation. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run and wanting to surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

  • The Immortal Who Loved Me

The Immortal Who Loved Me by Lynsay Sands

The Immortal Who Loved Me by Lynsay Sands is $1.99! This is book twenty-one (wow!) in the Argeneau series, which is filled to the brim with vampires. This is also the most recent book in the series, though the next one comes out at the end of this month. For the most part, books in the series can be read as standalone novels. Some readers mentioned that a lot happens in this book, maybe a little too much. Others said the book has a good blend of humor and adventure. Any fans of the series in the Bitchery?

A few hours ago, Sherry Carne would have sworn that vampires didn’t exist. That’s before rogue immortals rampage through her store, leaving bloody chaos (literally) in their wake. The kicker comes when Sherry learns that one of the vamps on the bad guys’ trail may be her life mate. Her head says it’s impossible. The rest of her takes one look at Basileios Argeneau, and has much more interesting ideas.

Whatever Basil expected in a life mate, funny, outspoken Sherry isn’t it. But mind-blowing chemistry and instinct don’t lie. They tell him something else too – that Sherry’s connection to the immortal world goes deeper than she knows. And that she’s in the kind of danger only Basil can save her from – if she’ll just trust him, now and forever…

  1. Jessica says:

After reading Lothaire, an unnamed friend used the phrase “jizzcuzzi” because one of the sex scenes talked about “hot, steaming jets of semen” and NOW I CAN NEVER UN-KNOW THAT WORD. Anyway, that’s why I only gave Lothaire three stars. JIZZCUZZI.

  2. Amanda says:

@Jessica: Jizzcuzzi gets an automatic five stars from me.

  3. Donna Marie says:

“You’re an outfitter check out girl with aspirations for K-mart.”

Best insult of the year 2012. I LOVED Lothaire!! Any time an author tries to turn their villain into a “hero” the results can be mixed, but the King of Vampires and his backwoods queen were perfection.

  4. Sara says:

I think it may just be me, but both this and original cover of Lothaire I swear are Nathan Fillion/Captain Mal staring back at me. Does anyone else wonder/hope if he moonlights as a romance-novel cover model?

  5. DonnaMarie says:

@Sara, OMG, you are so right! No wonder loved the cover. I thought it was because they nailed the way I imagined him.

  6. Karen H near Tampa says:

Lothaire cover model is Paul Marron (he even toured with Kresley Cole and came to my area but I was sick and couldn’t go and I’m still bummed about it).
My favorite part of Lothaire, besides the cover, is that the heroine calls him “Leo” as in “Lothaire, Enemy of Old.” He’s the most bad-ass vampire there is and she doesn’t give him any respect! I love it and I call him “Leo,” too!

  7. ClaireC says:

@Jessica – Shadow’s Claim has a super-similar line! Can’t remember exactly (read a couple years ago for Vaginal Fantasy book club), but it was something about “scorching jets bath(ing) her womb.” Which, ouch and also yuck. I made the mistake of reading that paragraph or two out loud to DH and he brought it up for weeks afterward!

  8. DianeN says:

I think Lothaire looks a lot like Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, better known as Jaime Lannister!

  9. Patricia says:

You know what book needs a new cover? “Burm For Me”. It just sends the wrong vibe and honestly undersells the awesomeness that is Ilona Andrews.

  10. celia says:

Why can’t I find the books on sale for $1.99? Can someone help direct me with a link?

  11. Amanda says:

@Celia: At the end of each book description, there should be a set of icons that will take you to the books at those sites (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc). However, if you’re outside the US, the sales might not be available to you, though we’re working on a sales newsletter to accommodate readers in other countries!

  12. Alina says:

Oh, man, Kresley Cole. I’ve only read one other book in the series before this, one of the werewolf ones, but hey, Lothair was on sale and I’m pretty sure Amanda and I have similar tastes, so I bought it.

I now know how Scottish readers feel about Highlander romances. The levels of fakeness and lack of research of the “Russian” bits… I really had to filter it all out. And it’s not like I didn’t know this going in. I knew the scottishness of the werewolves is fake and only “researched” insofar as to give the book the required flavour, but it really is different when it’s your own native culture. Harder to overlook.

The next book in the series, Shadow’s Claim, is on sale too. I enjoyed that one much more, largely because it takes place almost entirely “off Earth” and outside of Earth cultures.

  13. Tam says:

‘Burn for Me’ has a terrible cover. The recent Kate Daniels books have been great, even if Kate looks a bit – well, more Anglo than she’s described in the books.

I am reading ‘Lothaire’ and I think I’ve watched too much ‘OITNB’ because when he’s killing the poor prison guards willy-nilly, all I can think about is the stout grumpy guards from ‘Orange’ and wonder about their families and their pensions.

  14. Mona42 says:

Thank you very much, I like the book!
