Historical Romances from Lorret, Hunter, & More

  • A Lily Among Thorns

A Lily Among Thorns by Rose Lerner

A Lily Among Thorns by Rose Lerner is 99c! This is a historical romance that deals with some close quarters interaction, as the heroine offers the hero a place to stay. Readers mentioned that Solomon makes a great beta hero, if that happens to be your catnip. However, others said there was too much going on aside from the central plot. Have you read this one?

Honesty can be the deadliest policy of all.

Lady Serena Ravenshaw is one of London’s most prosperous women, but she’s never forgotten the misery that set her on the path to success. Nor has she forgotten the drunken young gentleman who gave her the means to start her long, tortuous climb out of the gutter.

When he knocks on the door of the Ravenshaw Arms to ask her help in retrieving a stolen family heirloom, she readily agrees to help, and to let him stay rent-free. After all, Serena prefers debts to fall in her favor.

Still grieving the death of his twin brother, Solomon Hathaway just wanted to be left alone in his dye-making shop—until his highborn uncle sends him to the infamous Lady Serena to scour London’s underworld for the missing bauble.

He’s shocked to discover she’s the same bedraggled waif to whom he once gave his entire quarterly allowance. Yet as they delicately tread common ground, they must negotiate a treacherous world of crime, espionage and betrayal before they can learn to trust—and love—again.

  • His Wicked Reputation

His Wicked Reputation by Madeline Hunter

His Wicked Reputation by Madeline Hunter is $1.99! This is the first book in her Wicked Trilogy and involves a hero and heroine with a very antagonistic relationship, which many readers loved. However, some readers mentioned there was more telling than showing. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Gareth Fitzallen is celebrated for four things: his handsome face, his notable charm, his aristocratic connections, and an ability to give the kind of pleasure that has women begging for more. Normally he bestows his talents on experienced, worldly women. But when he heads to Langdon’s End to restore a property he inherited—and to investigate a massive art theft—he lays plans to seduce a most unlikely lady.

Eva Russell lives a spinster’s life of precarious finances and limited dreams while clinging to her family’s old gentry status. She supports herself by copying paintings while she plots to marry her lovely sister to a well-established man. Everyone warns her of Gareth’s reputation, and advises her to lock her sister away. Only it is not her sister Gareth desires. One look, and she knows he is trouble. One kiss, however, proves she is no match for this master of seduction.

  • The Maddening Lord Montwood

The Maddening Lord Montwood by Vivienne Lorret

The Maddening Lord Montwood by Vivienne Lorret is $1.99! This is the third (and possibly final?) book in the The Rakes of Fallow Hall series. Many found the heroine a little stubborn and hardheaded, while others loved the pacing of the story. It’s also recommended that you read the previous two books to fully understand the hero. But you’re in luck, because those books are also on sale!

The Rakes of Fallow Hall wagered that they would never succumb to love—yet in Vivienne Lorret’s newest novel, the final rogue meets his match.

Frances Thorne can handle anything—except losing her position, her home, and her father to debtor’s prison all in one day. So when a generous offer of assistance falls into her lap, she’s grateful for a second chance, even if it seems too good to be true. The last thing she needs is for the charming, infuriating—maddening—Lord Lucan Montwood to stand in her way.

The end of the bachelors’ wager is near, and Lucan Montwood can taste victory—just so long as he can stay away from the one woman who sees through his façade. Yet when he learns that Frances has been caught in an insidious trap, Lucan can’t deny that he will do anything to help. Convincing her to trust him is the hard part, resisting her is next to impossible, but falling in love with her? That may be far too simple.

  • The Secret Heart

The Secret Heart by Erin Satie

The Secret Heart by Erin Satie is FREE! This is the first book in the No Better Angels series and the second book, The Lover’s Knot ( A | BN | K |iB ), was a nominee in the Historical DABWAHA category this year. Many reviewers say that this isn’t your typical historical romance, which is something that they see as a pro rather than a con, though some thought the author did more telling than showing. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

    She’s a fortune-hunter. He’s nobody’s prey.

Adam, Earl of Bexley, lives to work. His only relief is the sordid savagery of bare-knuckle boxing. Not women, and definitely not a disreputable, scheming woman who dances in secret with such passion…

Caro Small is desperate to escape her selfish family. Her only chance is a good marriage, and she intends to marry Adam—whether he likes it or not. But the more she schemes to entrap him, the more she risks trapping her own heart.

Adam won’t be caught by a fortune-hunter’s ambitious schemes. But the vulnerable, passionate woman underneath the plots might just bring him to his knees.

How did I miss A Lily Among Thorns? What a good surprise. Rose Lerner is one of my favorite romance authors.

  2. DonnaMarie says:

I may have to buy the Lerner just for the title. When my brothers and I were little, my dad always introduced me as his rose among the thorns. A lily is close enough – even if doesn’t make sense.

  3. LauraL says:

I downloaded A Lily Among Thorns last night! On sale!

I really enjoyed His Wicked Reputation and the way the relationship between Gareth and Eva develops over the story. Definitely starts out a bit antagonistic. The next book in the series is due out soon.

  4. Tam says:

Gosh, am I the only one who hated Lerner’s ‘Sweet Disorder’? I mean, I really disliked it, and I usually love (or tolerate with mild eye-rolling) most Regencies. My poor husband had to listen to me ranting about it while I read next to him in bed.

  5. Lizzy says:

Nope Tam, although until now I thought I must be the only one. I didn’t really like Sweet Disorder and despite my misgivings I decided to try her next one, True Pretenses because it was glowingly reviewed. It was a DNF for me. I found both the hero and heroine totally unlikable, the town politics unlikely, and the sex unappealing. I know a lot of people in the romance community love her but she just doesn’t work for me at all. I don’t think I’ll be trying any more of her books.

  6. VeeBeeJeeBee says:

Hey, me too! *Waves* I read Sweet Disorder and while I was impressed by the level of historical research and I thought the political plot was genuinely interesting (and original given what most Regency Historicals tend to centre on), like Tam and Lizzy I wasn’t mad about the characters, who to me seemed really unlikeable. I can appreciate that having a heroine who is kind of a bitch can be a powerful subversion of tropes about femininity and romance heroines, I had a lot of trouble feeling like I cared about her or her HEA. It’s a shame because I *really* wanted to like this book. Ho-hum.

  7. lijakaca says:

I’ve read A Lily Among Thorns, I really liked it. Solomon’s physical type was a refreshing change from most Regency heroes, as was the whole relationship dynamic – so it wasn’t as much of a comfort read, but felt more satisfying.
