Another Mixed Bag with Contemporary, Historical, & Erotic Romances!

  • Exclusively Yours

    Exclusively Yours by Shannon Stacey

RECOMMENDED: Exclusively Yours by Shannon Stacey is .99! This is book 1 in the Kowalskis series, and Sarah thinks it’s just terrific. She reviewed this book when it came out in 2010 and wrote, “I had such a good old time reading this book. There were some flaws to the plot but while reading it, I was charmed and giggly and totally absorbed. This book made me happy. That’s probably the best way to put it: it made me smile. A lot. Books like this are why I read romance.” It was a Sizzling Book Club selection as well. If you like contemporary comedy, this is a great deal.

When Keri Daniels’ editor finds out she has previous carnal knowledge of reclusive bestselling author Joe Kowalski, she gives Keri a choice: get an interview or get a new job.

Joe’s never forgotten the first girl to break his heart, so he’s intrigued to hear Keri’s back in town and looking for him. Despite his intense need for privacy, he’ll grant Keri an interview if it means a chance to finish what they started in high school.

He proposes an outrageous plan – for every day she survives with his family on their annual camping and four-wheeling trip, Keri can ask one question. Keri agrees; she’s worked too hard to walk away from her career.

But the chemistry between them is still as potent as the bug spray, Joe’s sister is out to avenge his broken heart and Keri hasn’t ridden an ATV since she was ten. Who knew a little blackmail, a whole lot of family and some sizzling romantic interludes could make Keri reconsider the old dream of Keri & Joe 2gether 4ever.

  • Mercy

    Mercy by HelenKay Dimon

Mercy by HelenKay Dimon is $1.99! This is more of an erotic romance than Dimon’s typical romantic suspense, and I wound up picking up the book after hearing about it on a podcast with Sarah, Elyse, and Dimon. For the most part, I enjoyed the book and I’d probably give it a C+ grade. I wrote a short Goodreads review for it:

While I understand Mercy is erotica, I would have liked more emotional interaction between Becca and Jarrett, rather than it being lumped in at the end. Though I liked Wade, Jarrett’s employee and friend, as a secondary character, I found his love interest to be whiny and a little too bitter for my tastes. Overall, though, I liked how Becca and Jarrett’s backgrounds were weaved into the current actions of the story.

After she infiltrated his business and betrayed his trust, a disavowed CIA agent must seek sanctuary in the bedroom of a man who will either help her, kill her, or bring her to her knees…

Becca Ford is on her own. Eight months after she headed up a sting operation to take down millionaire club owner Jarrett Holt, the other agents in her special ops team have been eliminated under odd circumstances, and she needs a place to hide.

Jarrett is a man who prefers darkness to light. He deals in the only truly valuable currency—information—and his supper club caters to an exclusive clientele. It was an uncharacteristic moment of weakness when he let a woman into his life. But it’s not luck that the criminal charges disappeared . . . as did the evidence.

When Becca returns to the club seeking his help, Jarrett doesn’t want to hear her story. But he does want her body, and demands that she give it to him. He’ll keep her safe—for now—but it’ll be in his bed and on his terms, until he says they’re done.

  • Wild Thing

    Wild Thing by Robin Kaye

Wild Thing by Robin Kaye is $2.99! This is a contemporary romance with an outdoorsy hero and a city-dwelling heroine. This is the first book in Kaye’s Wild Thing series, and a couple more of her books also appear to be on sale. Some thought the setup was a little silly and had trouble getting into it, while other readers loved the opposites attract romance. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

IF HE THINKS A GROUP OF BEAUTIFUL WOMEN IS A HANDFUL, WAIT UNTIL HE MEETS HER…

White-water rafting guide Hunter Kincaid is psyched to lead a group of fashion models into the Idaho wilderness for a photoshoot. But it’s Toni, the feisty manager of Action Models, who creates enough sparks to start a forest fire…

When rugged outdoorsman meets the original city girl, worlds will definitely collide in Robin Kaye’s fresh new series.

  • Much Ado About Jack

Much Ado About Jack by Christy English

Much Ado About Jack by Christy English is $1.99 at most vendors and, as of this morning, $2.99 at Kobo. Normally, I’m not big into historical romance covers, but the model on this one looks vaguely like Julian Edelman – wide receiver for the New England Patriots and the best butt in the NFL. Many reviewers mentioned that those reading this as a standalone may be taking a risk since past characters make a frequent appearance, while others felt this historical was well-researched, a topic that has had some recent debate here on the site.

How to Become London’s Most Notorious Widow:

    1. Vow to NEVER remarry

    2. Own a ship and become fabulously wealthy

    3. Wear the latest risqué fashions in your signature color

    4. Do NOT have a liaison at the Prince Regent’s palace with a naval captain whose broad shoulders and green eyes make you forget Rule #1

Angelique Beauchamp, the widowed Countess of Devonshire, has been twice burned by love, and she is certain that no man will ever touch her heart again. But that doesn’t mean she can’t indulge a little—and it would be hard to find a more perfect dalliance than one with the dashing Captain James Montgomery.

After a brief torrid affair, James tries to forget Angelique and his undeniable thirst for more. The luscious lady was quite clear that their liaison was temporary. But for the first time, the lure of the sea isn’t powerful enough to keep him away…

@Amanda Nice call out! I am insta-buying Much Ado About Jack based on that likeness to JE11. Making … possibly ..

  2. Sara says:

That was supposed to be making ‘grabbyhands’.. possibly ‘gropeyhands’, but comments field didn’t like my use of brackets. Ruining my witty repartee!!!

  3. Leah says:

Oh, I got Exclusively Yours a while back! I liked it a lot. The perfect mix of pleasant, happy sighs and laughter. Save it for a day you’re feeling kind of down. It’ll pick you up.

  4. Kareni says:

Fans of Marie Force’s Fatal series might be interested to know that she has released a prequel novella in which the two leads meet for the first time. It’s free on many platforms including some that are overseas.

  5. Ellie says:

As a former raft guide, I made it as far in the Wild Thing blurb as “whitewater rafting guide” before I did the click click buy thing. Here’s praying that it is well researched and doesn’t induce irrational rage that ruins an otherwise good book. (Note: outdoorsy types don’t typically wear denim when leading back country expeditions).

  6. Mary says:

In tangential book news, Hay House has requested that all major vendors price Wayne Dyer’s ebooks at $1.99 after his recent transition. A really nice opportunity if you like uplifting/spiritual books.

  7. beck says:

I’ve been in a reading slump. I can’t seem to shake it. (Totally the yips.) Tessa Dare’s newest one almost got me over the hurdle but nope. Maybe Exclusively Yours will do the trick.

  8. Claire says:

Any recs for historical fiction where the romance is more of a subplot, rather than stuff that fits squarely into the “romance novel” genre? I don’t care for the Regency period, but all other themes and eras are fine, especially Western.

  9. Mary says:

@Claire, my favorite book is Gone with the Wind. Some other historicals that have romance but are not romance novels:

The Tea Rose – Jennifer Donnelly

Pemberly Ranch (don’t remember the author; it’s a retelling of Pride and Prejudice set on a ranch after the Civil War)

Timeline – Michael Crichton (not really historical fiction, but they travel back to the middle ages and I really enjoyed it)

    Fallen Angels – Bernard Cornwell

Through a Glass Darkly – Karleen Koen

  10. Tam says:

My favourite ever historical-featuring-a-great-romance – Pamela Belle’s ‘Wintercombe.’ She’s a Puritan wife named Silence with five children married to a prominent Roundhead who’s much older than her, and he’s the Cavalier captain who’s occupying her manor house. Silence is beautifully drawn, and so are all five of her children. I love that book with an endless passion and from the reviews on Goodreads, I’m not the only one who felt that way.

  11. Mary says:

@Tam, thank you for the suggestion; adding it to my TBR!

Sara Donati’s Into the Wilderness books are wonderful; they start in 18th century upstate NY and include Scotland, New Orleans, and other settings through to about mid 19th century.

  12. Heather S says:

Michelle Moran does wonderful historical fic, most set in ancient Egypt, but she did one in France and one in India. Mary Renault’s historical Greek fiction is all amazing, too.

  13. Rebecca Pawel says:

@Claire – Robert Graves (of “I, Claudius” and “Claudius the God”) wrote re-telling of how the Odyssey came to be composed (as an autobiographical fiction by a feisty princess surrounded by suitors she doesn’t want) called “Homer’s Daughter.” I’d recommend it.

Elizabeth Marie Pope alas wrote only two books, “The Perilous Guard” (Elizabethan England) and “The Sherwood Ring” (New York State in the late 18th C and mid-twentieth) but they’re great if you can find them.

If you don’t mind some mystery mixed up with romantic elements:
Ancient Rome: Lindsay Davis “Falco” mysteries trace a couple’s relationship over several books. Start with the first one “The Silver Pigs.”
Medieval England: Margaret Frazer’s “The Squire’s Tale” and Ellis Peters “One Corpse Too Many.” (Both of these are parts of longer series, but those specifically have romances that are kind of sweet, and are early enough that they aren’t formulaic.)

I can think of a ton of other historical mysteries with romance subplots (including my own), but I don’t know if that’s what you’re looking for. The ones above are good though, even if you’re not generally a mystery fan.
