  • Burn for Me

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews is $1.99! Burn for Me is the first book in the Hidden Legacy series, and is an urban fantasy/billionaire story with magic, suspense, and a 4.4-star rating from readers on GoodReads. For those who remember, this book made it to the finals in this year’s DABWAHA tournament, and it was beaten by another Ilona Andrews title – Magic Breaks ( A | K | G | AB | Au )

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand-new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire . . .

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile situation. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run and wanting to surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

  • Vicious

    Vicious by V. E. Schwab

RECOMMENDED: Vicious by V.E. Schwab is $2.99! Though I have not read this, several (four to be exact, two of whom have rated it five starts on Goodreads) of my friends have and absolutely loved it. With rivalries, super powers, and experiments gone wrong, I’ve heard Vicious compared to being a literary comic book. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.

A masterful, twisted tale of ambition, jealousy, betrayal, and superpowers, set in a near-future world.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn’t automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.

  • Charming

    Charming by Elliott James

Charming by Elliott James is $1.99! This is book one in the Pax Arcana urban fantasy series and has been frequently compared to the Iron Druid series and the Harry Dresden Files. Many readers loved the premise of the book, though some felt it didn’t quite live up to the expectations of the book’s description. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

John Charming isn’t your average Prince…

He comes from a line of Charmings — an illustrious family of dragon slayers, witch-finders and killers dating back to before the fall of Rome. Trained by a modern day version of the Knights Templar, monster hunters who have updated their methods from chainmail and crossbows to kevlar and shotguns, he was one of the best. That is — until he became the abomination the Knights were sworn to hunt.

That was a lifetime ago. Now, he tends bar under an assumed name in rural Virginia and leads a peaceful, quiet life. One that shouldn’t change just because a vampire and a blonde walked into his bar… Right?

  • Blood Trinity

    Blood Trinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Blood Trinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love is 99c! This seems to be more of a urban fantasy rather than a traditional Kenyon paranormal romance, and it features demons in Atlanta. A few readers found the book to be a little cliche as far as urban fantasy heroines go, while others enjoyed this as a start to a new series. Has anyone read this one?

Supernatural warriors bound by an extraordinary code of honor face an ultimate test of loyalty in the exciting new paranormal thriller from New York Times bestselling authors Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love.

Atlanta has become the battlefield between human and demon. All her life, Evalle Kincaid has walked the line between the two. Her origins unknown, she’s on a quest to learn more about her past . . . and her future.

When a demon claims a young woman in a terrifying attack and there’s no one else to blame, Evalle comes under suspicion. Now she’s on a deadly quest for her own survival. Through the sordid underground of an alternate Atlanta where nothing is as it seems to the front lines of the city, where her former allies have joined forces to hunt her, Evalle must prove her innocence or pay the ultimate price.

But saving herself is the least of her problems if she doesn’t stop the coming apocalypse. The clock is ticking and Atlanta is about to catch fire. . .

  1. Leah says:

I liked Charming a lot! Admittedly I tended to zone out during the many fight sequences… they were well written, but I’ve never been really held by long fights in books. But the characters are fun, and the story ideas are neat. I’d say it’s definitely worth a lazy evening read! nothing revolutionary, but still lots of fun. I was actually just thinking about this book the other day, and I see a sequel is out, so it’s time to hit the library!

  2. Darlynne says:

I, unexpectedly, liked CHARMING a whole lot, too; it’s one of the few new-to-me books on which I took a chance and splurged. The characters are very engaging and different, the battle between one faction and the other managed to hold my interest. I hope that doesn’t sound like faint praise, because this has been one of the most enjoyable reads for me.

  3. Gloria says:

I just started reading Vicious and it’s so good! I’ve read A Darker Shade of Magic by the same author and I really cannot recommend her enough, she’s fantastic.

  4. Hanna says:

so… I haven’t read Ilona Andrews yet. Should I give it a try? Is this a good ‘starter’ book for someone new to Ilona Andrews?

  5. Amanda says:

@Hanna: I’d say it’s a good place to start, given that it’s the first book in a new series. If you like that one, feel free to tackle her Kate Daniels. Book eight in that series is coming out next month.

  6. PamG says:

Ilona Andrews rocks! This is book 1 in a new series, so it is a pretty good starting place to first experience their work. (Husband/wife writing team & writing is beautifully integrated) The Kate Daniels series is excellent urban fantasy, but I’ve actually enjoyed everything they’ve written. Kick ass heroines and a nice balance of humor and angst.

  7. Hanna says:

Ok, thanks PamG, sounds like something right up my alley 😀

  8. Patricia says:

    @hanna

Yes, this is how I got into Ilona Andrews! Once you start, it’s hard to stop. I ended up reading 11 of their books in 3 weeks!

  9. Tam says:

I really liked ‘Burn For Me’, despite disliking the entire initial premise. I started reading it while rolling my eyes a bit, and by the time I’d finished it, I’d already bought and sent a copy to my sister.

Bought ‘Charming’ because I moved to rural Virginia a week ago. We have a random chicken who shows up in our garden and stalks around it possessively like a gunslinger looking for a fight. I – have no idea where she comes from, but I keep looking out the window, and there she is.

  10. Hanna says:

@Amanda I did a quick Google search and did see the Kate Daniels series… I’m usually wary of POV books; it’s a bit of a hit-and-miss with me, but I might give it a try, if I like this one.

@Patricia that was me after I read my Shelley Laurenston book. It was buy-everything-this-woman-writes until I couldn’t find any more of her stuff. I’m in a lull right now, actually, looki

  11. Hanna says:

well, now, that’s what happens when I try to write long comments using my phone; my finger touched the submit button before I was done :)). anyway, tto continue – I’m looking for a new author to obsess over and this looks promising

  12. Kimberly R says:

Fair warning about the Ilona Andrews book: the second one doesn’t have a release date (it did have one later this year but it will be postponed and no new date has been set.) And although the novel does come to a successful conclusion, there are some things that are left hanging. I really enjoyed this book and I absolutely don’t want to stop anyone from buying it or reading it, because I think it is great and worth the read.

  13. Texas Book Lover says:

I picked up all of the Kate Daniels series when they were on sale last year and then put off reading them because UF series tend to be hit and miss for me. When I finally decided to give then a go I devoured them. They are absolutely fantastic. Burn For Me is terrific too. I say get it and then read it closer to the release of book two.

  14. Ulrike says:

How do you find out about these deals? I receive Amazon’s daily Kindle deals e-mails, and I know I would have noticed if an Ilona Andrews book had been mentioned. A month or two ago, they had a one-day sale on an Ursula Vernon book that I missed out on, as well. And, I nearly missed the sale on Libriomancer except that Jim C Hines mentioned it on Facebook before it expired. I’m getting pretty frustrated, and I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do to make sure I see it when the books I care about are discounted.

  15. Amanda says:

@Ulrike: I personally subscribe to a few email newsletters that tell me about books on sale – BookBub, EreaderIQ, and BookPerk are the ones I use. With the first two, you vcan set your reading preferences, so if you’re only interseted in certain genres, those are the sales they’ll send you.

  16. Ulrike says:

    @Amanda: Thanks!

BTW, the Kindle link above is wrong, but Burn for Me is still $1.99, so I snagged that.

  17. Amanda says:

@Ulrike: You’re welcome! And the Amazon link worked for me? What issues did you have with it?

  18. Ulrike says:

@Amanda, I must have been clicking the link inside the book review text, which goes to Magic Breaks. I had read all the way to the bottom before scrolling back up to the top to click it, so I wasn’t reading carefully, just clicking what was next to the book image.

  19. Amanda says:

@Ulrike: Ah okay! Below each entry should be a list of square buttons/icons (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc). If you click on those, that should take you to the book. Just for future reference!
