June’s New Releases

It’s a slow month for us at SBTB HQ, so hopefully we won’t add too much to your TBR piles!

  • Asking for It

Asking for It by Lilah Pace

    Author: Lilah Pace
Released: June 2, 2015 by Berkley
    Genre: , ,

“This is who I am. This is what I want. Now I need a man dangerous enough to give it to me.”

Graduate student Vivienne Charles is afraid of her own desires—ashamed to admit that she fantasizes about being taken by force, by a man who will claim her completely and without mercy. When the magnetic, mysterious Jonah Marks learns her secret, he makes an offer that stuns her: they will remain near-strangers to each other, and meet in secret so that he can fulfill her fantasy.

Their arrangement is twisted. The sex is incredible. And—despite their attempts to stay apart—soon their emotions are bound together as tightly as the rope around Vivienne’s wrists. But the secrets in their pasts threaten to turn their affair even darker…

Reader Advisory: Asking for It deals explicitly with fantasies of non-consensual sex. Readers sensitive to portrayals of non-consensual sex should be advised.

Amanda says: This is the romance that’ll have everyone talking this year. Mark my words.

  • Deadly Strain

    Deadly Strain by Julie Rowe

    Author: Julie Rowe
Released: June 15, 2015 by Carina Press
    Genre: ,
    Series: Biological Response Team #1

Major Grace Samuels, a trauma surgeon deployed to Afghanistan, spends her life helping her fellow soldiers overcome disease and combat injuries. But her own wounds are harder to heal. Wracked with guilt over the death of a fellow soldier, she finds comfort in her only friend and appointed bodyguard, weapons sergeant Jacob “Sharp” Foster.

Sharp feels more for Grace than a soldier should, more than he wants to admit. When the team discovers a new, quick-to-kill strain of Anthrax, he tries to focus on the mission to find its source. He knows he can help Grace defeat her demons, but first they must defeat the deadly outbreak.

Sharp is Grace’s most loyal ally, but in close quarters, he starts to feel like more. She can’t watch someone else she cares about die—but she might not have a choice. The closer they get to finding the source of the strain, the closer it gets to finding them.

Elyse says: A romantic suspense novel with a bio-terrorism angle. It looks different and I’m excited to read it.

Amanda says: I’m with Elyse on this one. Bio-terrorism seems like a nice shake up from the typical romantic suspense plots.

    Genre: ,

But then Teague actually meets his new fiancée, sees the bruises on her neck and the fight still left in her big blue eyes, and vows he will do everything in his power to protect her.

Everyone knows the O’Malleys have a dangerous reputation. But Callie wasn’t aware just what that meant until she saw Teague, the embodiment of lethal grace and coiled power. His slightest touch sizzles through her. But the closer they get, the more trouble they’re in. Because Callie’s keeping a dark secret-and what Teague doesn’t know could get him killed.

Elyse says: I saw the poster of the cover art at RT and was all ooooh. Plus it’s a modern marriage of convenience story and I want to see how that works out

Amanda says: How did I not know about this book before? I only saw it when Elyse put it down for a new release this month. I’m totally piggybacking onto Elyse’s picks.

Until one night forever alters the course of their future, when a devastated Gracie disappears without a trace, leaving Zack to agonize over what happened to the girl he loved. As the years pass, his desperate efforts to find her uncovered nothing.

Now working for Devereaux Security, he stumbles across a painting featuring a special place only he and Gracie would know. The image is too perfectly rendered for it to be coincidence. His Gracie must be alive. When he finally tracks her down, he is shocked—and heart-broken—to discover the wounded shell of the girl he once knew and still loves. Her psychic gifts are gone, and worse, she believes he betrayed her all those years ago.

  1. Sarah says:

What’s going on with the Asking For It cover? Is that STEAM coming out of her? O_o

  2. Dianna says:

Bought Asking For It. I can handle controversial stuff! (Maybe)

  3. Jamie says:

Oh thank God, FINALLY, a romance novel that’s not afraid to tackle one of the most common “controversial” fantasies. Will be buying Asking for It.

I’m reaaaallly hesitant to get Valentine, because I’m big on the Crusades and, well, most authors just don’t put enough research in, so they screw up a lot of really important things. I might library read that sicker though, so if I need to throw it, I won’t feel bad.

  4. lindleepw says:

I may have to take off June 2nd. Nalini Singh’s new book “Shards of Hope” is coming out. And Julie James has a new book coming out the same day!! How did I not know this?! I stumbled across this information last week. “Suddenly One Summer” I love her! And now “The Marriage Contract” sounds good. I’m a sucker for a good marriage of convenience story.

  5. Heather S says:

I’m eagerly awaiting “The Invasion of the Tearling” by Erika Johansen on 9 Jun!

  6. Emily says:

None of these books really interest me at all. They seem all skewered towards a few types of readers a) erotic and b) romantic suspense. (Even the Katee Robert mentions the heroine has suspicious bruises and a dark secret.) All of them look really dark, especially for what I’m looking. What happened to beach reads? (Although I understand, different tastes for different people. I just wish this list was a little more diverse feeling.)

All Access Romance has their list up today. Their list includes a lot of lighter stuff including the new Julie James out tomorrow (surprised that wasn’t on this list).

  7. Amanda says:

@Emily: Our new release posts are a little different from those you might see elsewhere. We don’t typically list all of the new romances coming out, and instead we just cover those we’re personally excited for! So the posts are definitely skewed to our reading tastes and this one in particular is a little shorter than normal. A lot of us are trying to whittle down our TBR piles and are reading a lot of backlist, rather than books hitting the shelves this month.

  8. Don’t forget that the new Julie James novel comes out tomorrow!

  9. DonnaMarie says:

Today it’s all about Julie James!! I’ve got a countdown going: 21.5 hours till I can get to the bookstore tomorrow. Yes, yes, Shard of Hope is out tomorrow too, but Nalini Singh would totally understand.

  10. Cordy (not stuck in spam filter sub-type) says:

“Deadly Strain” is squarely in the middle of my wheelhouse. Science! Fraternization! Hot sergeants keeping female officers safe! Thank you for highlighting this – I hope the sample works so I can dive headlong into a new book.

  11. […] releases: Fiction Vixen (UF/romance), Smart Bitches (romance), AAR (romance), and Tor.com (scifi, fantasy, genre […]

  12. ElizA says:

Looking forward to Lori Handeland’s Sisters of the Craft series! The first book is In The Air Tonight! I am happy to see Handeland back to the paranormal realm! It is about time.
