Romances with Runaway Brides, U.S. Marshals, & More

  • Take a Chance on Me

Take a Chance on Me by Jennifer Dawson

Take a Chance on Me by Jennifer Dawson is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance with a runaway bride and a bartender. It’s also the first book in the Something New series. Readers thought this was a great first book in a new series, though some found the story to be a little too cute. Anyone taking a chance on this book? (Harhar, see what I did there?)

    Gorgeous runaway brides. . .

When Maddie Donovan runs out on her high school sweetheart moments before walking down the aisle, she ends up at a bar in the small town of Revival, Illinois, with only the wedding dress on her back, fifty dollars to her name, and her “good girl” reputation in tatters. Not ready to return to Chicago and face the music, she accepts hot bartender Mitch Riley’s offer to stay at his place. But sharing such close quarters is driving Maddie insane with desire.

Always drink for free. . .

Mitch thinks he’s seen it all–until Maddie strides into his bar in full wedding attire and downs three shots of whiskey. Though the gorgeous knockout seems tough as nails, he also senses her vulnerability. With a troubled past of his own, Mitch has no interest in ties of any kind–yet he can’t help falling for Maddie. Now he’s got to find a way to convince her to give love a second chance.

  • More Than This

More Than This by Shannyn Schroeder

More Than This by Shannyn Schroeder is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance between a teacher and a bartender. Though readers loved the chemistry between the hero and heroine overall, some thought the leading lady was a little too stubborn at times. This is the first in the O’Learys series and has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

When a lonely teacher teams up with a handsome bartender for some outrageous acts, they both get more than they bargained for…

Learning her ex-husband is going to be a father, Quinn Adams is determined to have a baby of her own—without the partnership of a man. But her sister and friends believe she needs to focus on herself first, and step out of her comfort zone by completing a list of adventures. Challenge number one is to go on five dates within two weeks. After a few disastrous attempts, Quinn’s ready to give up—until sexy bartender Ryan O’Leary offers his assistance.

Ryan has always been the dependable one in his family, often at his expense. But lately, he’s been longing for a life—and a woman—of his own. The woman he has in mind is Quinn. Though it seems all she wants is friendship, Ryan can’t ignore the explosive chemistry he feels between them. In the hopes of becoming closer, Ryan offers to help out with Quinn’s list. But when she asks him for a serious favor, he’s afraid it will jeopardize his chance to become more than friends.

  • One Night More

One Night More by Mandy Baxter

One Night More by Mandy Baxter is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance with a little bit of romantic suspense. The heroine has a one night stand with a man who will later become her bodyguard. Talk about awkward. Some readers felt the heroine suffered from a case of TSTL, while others said the book reminded them of Julie James’ FBI/US Attorney series (which I think is quite the compliment). Anyone read this one?

Journalist Harper Allen still remembers the handsome stranger who saved from disaster—and the sizzling one-night stand that followed. Too bad he left without a word or a clue to his real identity . . .

Then, a year later, Harper comes face to face with the man when he’s assigned to hide her from a senator’s assassin. Galen Kelly hasn’t forgotten a single sensual minute of his night with Harper . . . or the fact that she betrayed him. With the FBI also on their trail, he has to pretend he’s never met her—or risk both their lives. But as danger closes in, Galen may not be able to protect himself from taking the biggest risk of all . . .

  • Wicked Business

    Wicked Business by Janet Evanovich

Wicked Business by Janet Evanovich is $1.99! This is the second book in her Lizzy & Diesel series. My very first review for Smart Bitches was for Wicked Appetite. I gave it a D for a variety of frustrating reasons, one of which being that humor is subjective and the “jokes” in this book just weren’t for me. However, a couple people in the comments really like the series. Which camp are you in?

Janet Evanovich, mega-bestselling author of the beloved Stephanie Plum series, is back and better than ever. Her novels, hailed by GQ as “among the great joys of contemporary crime fiction,” deliver rollicking adventure with crackling wit and hilarious mayhem. And, now, one of the hottest writers today returns with dynamic duo Lizzy and Diesel to prove that when hunting down bad guys, the real fun is in the chase.

When Harvard University English professor and dyed-in-the-wool romantic Gilbert Reedy is mysteriously murdered and thrown off his fourth-floor balcony, Lizzy and Diesel take up his twenty-year quest for the Luxuria Stone, an ancient relic believed by some to be infused with the power of lust. Following clues contained in a cryptic nineteenth-century book of sonnets, Lizzy and Diesel tear through Boston catacombs, government buildings, and multimillion-dollar residences, leaving a trail of robbed graves, public disturbances, and spontaneous seduction.

I read Wicked Appetite right on the cusp of breaking up with Stephanie Plum. As I recall there were just too many structural similarities to the other series. . . or something. Too shallow, maybe. So I guess I won’t be buying the sequel.

Also I’m kind of tired of stuff reminding me of other stuff. I guess my one click button gets a break today.

  2. I just one-clicked One Night More – 2 of the 3 one-star reviews complained about too much descriptive sex. Sold!

  3. Kanoko says:

Of course, I bought and read One Night More because it looked fun and screamed Julie James. I was tempted to chuck it against the wall about halfway through, though. The writing was great (fantastic), but I wanted characters with common sense, you know? I was just… How can two people with investigative background be so dangerously idiotic?

If you like Julie James for her heroines like I do and think this will deliver in that department, then One Night More will be a great disappointment. I’ve never thought of any character as TSTL, ever, but the heroine here does actively try to get herself killed. The only reason she survived? The villain is as inept as she is. What a waste of great (fantastic) writing.

OK, OK. Long rant over. Sorry about that. And I’ve TBR’d the rest of the series, anyway. I’m sure the characters in the subsequent books will make me feel less stabby.

Re: Wicked Business- we have catacombs in Boston?

The follow up to Elle Kennedy’s awesome book ‘the deal’ was released today. It’s called ‘the mistake’ and sounds like it could be as good as it’s predecessor! I don’t know what’s in the air, but there have been some great NA books released lately… Sarina Bowen, Kristen Callihan and now this new series. Love it!
