  • Love Irresistibly

    Love Irresistibly by Julie James

RECOMMENDED LIKE HOLY SMOKING WHOA: Love Irresistibly by Julie James is $1.99 right now. Just… if you like contemporary romance with very smart, very competent heroines who are professionally capable and emotionally and intellectually savvy, you will like this book. It has a 4+ star average on GoodReads, it was a DABWAHA nominee, and it was a two-time RT award winner.

One of my favorite things about this book is that part of the conflict rests on the characters’ jobs, but also on how incredibly busy they are, and how difficult it is to fit a personal life into a busy work life. It sounds so dull when I type it out like that, but even so, I really, really liked this book.

HE’S USED TO GETTING WHAT HE WANTS…

A former football star and one of Chicago’s top prosecutors, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cade Morgan will do anything to nail a corrupt state senator, which means he needs Brooke Parker’s help. As general counsel for a restaurant company, she can get a bug to the senator’s table at one of her five-star restaurants so the FBI can eavesdrop on him. All Cade has to do is convince Brooke to cooperate—and he’s not afraid to use a little charm, or the power of his office, to do just that.

AND WHAT HE WANTS IS HER.

A savvy businesswoman, Brooke knows she needs to play ball with the U.S. Attorney’s office—even if it means working with Cade. No doubt there’s a sizzling attraction beneath all their sarcastic quips, but Brooke is determined to keep things casual. Cade agrees—until a surprising turn of events throws his life into turmoil, and he realizes that he wants more than just a good time from the one woman with whom he could fall terrifyingly, irresistibly in love . . .

  • Brunch at Ruby’s

Brunch at Ruby’s by D.L. White

Brunch at Ruby’s by DL White is $1.99 right now. This is tagged as contemporary African-American women’s fiction, which is a lot of words to describe a book but they seem to come close. It has a 4+ star average, and readers who enjoyed it liked the collection of heroines, particularly the close and vividly realistic friendship between them.

Ruby’s Soul Food Cafe has been the neighborhood hot spot their whole lives, so it’s only fitting that Ruby’s is where Debra, Maxine and Renee meet monthly to do what girlfriends do– eat, drink and offer unsolicited advice on life and love.

Debra Macklin has it all: a successful career, a long marriage and a happy 12 year old daughter. But she’s hiding a secret that could not only shatter her perfect image, but destroy her marriage and career. When her secret is spilled, Debra is poised to lose everything she holds dear.

Maxine Donovan is a self made woman but despite all she earns and owns, she’s on a constant quest for Mr. Right. Handsome, aloof Malcolm Brooks might just be The One, but when Malcolm’s attention turns toward her friend instead, Maxine is ready to risk a strong bond to fight for him.

Renee Gladwell left a lucrative job and a handsome boyfriend to nurse her father and Gladwell Books back to health. A temporary stay has turned into four years of struggling with Alzheimer’s and a family owned bookstore that is in no shape to sell. Renee is in limbo, caring for a man who is slowly forgetting his past—including her. When she meets Malcolm Brooks, her life brightens, but is love worth risking a friendship?

  • All Fired Up

All Fired Up by Vivian Arend

All Fired Up by Elle Kennedy and Vivian Arend is free right now. This is erotic contemporary romance about a team of former military men who use their recon skills to help men romantically. It has a 3.75 star average on GoodReads, and this particular book, though the cover copy doesn’t indicate it, features a m/m/f menage. So, hey, free menage romance!

He’s ready to lead the way
Parker Wilson never thought he’d go from battle-hardened soldier to romance expert, but after his stint in the Rangers, that’s exactly what happened. As the owner of DreamMakers Inc., he helps other men win in the love department, using every resource available to plan the perfect date. When a routine recon turns into an unexpected night of passion, Parker’s mission becomes more personal—and he won’t give up until Lynn Davidson is all his.

She’s more than willing to follow
Lynn is a goner from the moment she lays eyes on the delectable Parker. She’s just ditched her boring almost-boyfriend and is tired of sticking to the straight and narrow. It’s time to walk on the wild side, and what better way than in the arms of the most irresistible man she’s ever met? But when their red-hot affair is threatened, it’ll take a team effort to make their dreams come true.

  • The Gift of Fear

The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker

The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker is .99 right now at Amazon. I bought this book awhile ago, at a slightly higher price, but seeing it on sale again prompted me to pick it up and read it. On one hand, it scared the poodle out of me and I should not have read it before bedtime. On the other, it decodes and explains signs of predatory behavior that made patterns that lead to violence seem a lot more obvious and predictable. I know many of you recommend this book, and I can see why. The chapters I found most interesting were the ones about managing potential violence in the workplace, and the chapters that explain how to defend yourself against someone who is trying to charm you or manipulate you – or both.

A stranger in a deserted parking lot offers to help carry a woman’s groceries. Is he a good Samaritan or is he after something else? A fired employee says “You’ll be sorry.” Will he return with a gun? After their first date, a man tells a woman it is their “destiny” to be married. What will he do when she won’t see him again? A mother has an uneasy feeling about the nice babysitter she’s just hired. Should she not go to work today?

These days, no one in America feels immune to violence. But now, in this extraordinary groundbreaking book, the nation’s leading expert on predicting violent behavior unlocks the puzzle of human violence and shows that, like every creature on earth, we have within us the ability to predict the harm others might do us and get out of its way. Contrary to popular myth, human violence almost always has a discernible motive and is preceded by clear warning signs.

Through dozens of compelling examples from his own career, Gavin de Becker teaches us how to read the signs, using our most basic but often most discounted survival skill – our intuition. The Gift of Fear is a remarkable, unique combination of practical guidance on leading a safer life and profound insight into human behavior.

I picked up The Gift of Fear last week and am in the middle of reading it. It’s full of helpful insights about trusting your instincts. Also, it’s showing me that I’m basically a person who doesn’t trust easily, which can be a good thing in a parking lot or stairwell;)

  3. It’s been a while since I read All Fired Up but I’m pretty sure there was only one or two menage scenes. Most of the book was about the m/f relationship. I think.

  4. Lostshadows says:

I read The Gift of Fear several years ago, so I don’t remember the details too well, but a site I read that recommends it frequently, always notes there are issues with the section on domestic violence.

  5. Mara says:

Yeah, I picked up All Fired Up for free and read it last night. That menage scene was quite a surprise based on the cover copy, but things quickly get back to just the hero & heroine. The book was fine- worth a read for $0. There are a lot of random other POV chapters that I didn’t love from characters who I presume are the protagonists of sequels.

  6. DonnaMarie says:

    Julie James for $1.99? SOLD!!

  7. Caroline says:

I bought All Fired Up since I really enjoy Kennedy and Arend separately. I couldn’t put my finger on it at first but I’d be reading along fine and then I’d find my forehead doing the “angry eleven.” It’s any scene with banter, especially with the guys talking to each other. It was painful, like a robot had been assigned to write those bits . . . *robot voice* “What is this thing you call . . . hu-mor? Does not compute.” *one oily dribbles from vision socket*

  8. […] is all the people who forgot to buy it in pre-sale. That last really cute spike was a mention from Sarah Wendell at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books and my favorite knuckleheads, Three Guys On Podcast. Also, I lowered the cost of the book last […]
