April Fools 2015: The Year of the Wearable

Smart Bitches wearable - a black wide bracelet with a screen on the face that tracks pages read, podcast time left, and money saved on deals. At the bottom is a STOP TIME button If there’s going to be a super high end wearable, it should stop time, right?

This is our tenth year of April Foolery, and while I know some people hate April Fools, I love it. The more silly it is, the better.

It’s an annual tradition around here, changing the landing page for April 1. We’ve inflicted many horrible and bizarre splash pages upon you. Here’s a look back at the previous April Fools. I had no idea how prescient some of them would become! Egads.

Someday, our time-stopping wearable device that doubles as a reader, pedometer, page counter, audio device, sale alarm, and timekeeper will arrive. Until then, keep reading, and Happy April, everyone!

Happy April, folks. See you next year!

I was not fooled, but I am very impressed with your creativity! Thanks for the early morning giggle.

  2. Lynnd says:

I look forward to your April Fools ideas every year. I really, really want this device though – stopping time for a few hours to allow me a chance to read would be soooooo wonderful. I’m lucky if I can find a few minutes these days.

  3. SB Sarah says:

At this point, I don’t think we can fool anyone on April 1, since we do something goofy every year, but coming up with the joke is a LOT of fun. I’m so happy you enjoyed it!

Ah, freezing time. Now THAT I would pay a premium price for!

  4. Karin says:

Count me fooled, at first I forgot it was April Fool’s Day, and thought your site got hijacked! But now I really want a device that will vibrate when one of my WL books goes on sale. Why is there not an app for that?

  5. cayenne says:

I went looking first this morning to see what this year’s April Fool’s was, and I love it. Personally, I would buy this device just to have Richard Armitage’s voice available 24/7!

  6. Tam B. says:

When you start the kickstarter campaign to crowd fund this – I’m IN!

You didn’t fool me, you just made me want this. Any chance we can just send the Apple / Samsung ideas people this page, advise them there is a big market out there wanting this and just get it made?

  7. Lisa J says:

But…I really want it!!!!! I’m with Tam B, count me on a kickstarter.

  8. Darlynne says:

This may be your most clever April Foolery yet. The detail was great and so inventive. You know you’ve created a device (even without the time-stopping feature) most of us would pay for, right? Ahead of the curve once again.

  9. LauraL says:

Geek gurl that I am, I really perked up at the idea of a wearable for me, a romance reader and nerd. So I am sitting here thinking, does it also work like a fitbit and also monitor activities? How much does it cost? Do they take PayPal? Then I remembered today’s date. Good work, Smart Bitches!

  10. Germaine says:

You had me, and I was wondering how much this thing would cost until I came to the freeze time bit. Well done!

  11. Karenmc says:

The SBTB April Fool’s tradition continues! And this is something I might even buy, especially with all those voice options (I’m looking at you, Colin Firth).

  12. Nikki says:

I loved this! I would totally buy this if it existed. Even without the time stopping capability. I am willing to fund the appropriate research to make it happen. 🙂

  13. Christine says:

I’m with the others who wanted it even without the time stopping feature. I especially want to get email messages from the ladies… Beautiful! Well done!

  14. Stacey says:

Sigh. I would absolutely buy one of those… even without the Freeze Time feature! Though obviously that’s the clincher right there. Good work, SBTB!

  15. SB Sarah says:

I would so want one, too! Basically we asked “What would be the ultimate romance reader wearable device?” The nice thing about imaginations and stock imagery, we can create whatever we want. But gosh, wouldn’t that be the best thing ever to wear on your wrist? And it’s nice-looking, too!

Someday, our venture capitalist will come… (with money, I mean, not in the other sense, though maybe that’s a romance that I haven’t read yet).

  16. Kate Rothwell says:

Aw, I came running over to see what you’d done. Your page is the only thing I like about April 1! This is a pretty good consolation prize though.

  17. jimthered says:

While I wasn’t fooled by this either (4/1 must be the *worst* day to actually release a new product), I was impressed with the detail. I usually dislike April Foo;s because most of the “jokes” are just simple lies that “work” by making the other person feel gullible (“I got fired today” “Really? That’s too bad.” “No — and you believed me! April Fools!”) but SBTB does put a lot of effort into making their AFD items actually funny. Kudos!

  18. Lostshadows says:

I was fooled briefly, but it was 5am and I haven’t had much sleep lately due to a cold. The cold medicine probably didn’t help either.

  19. lorenet says:

Loved it. However, where can I access the entire splash page?

  20. Melanie says:

I read this way too early in the morning and was cackling in my living room. I NEED Freeze Time.

  21. Shana says:

OK. This is as bad as ThinkGeek. Every year they have an April Fool’s product I wish was real. This year’s from them is a Game of Thrones themed CLUE game. http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/ilgm/?pfm=HP_Carousel_GameofThronesClue_1 And now I want you to kickstart this wearable! I’ve been resisting wearable tech but this could convince me.

  22. Francine says:

Great idea for a April 1, joke page. I loved the idea of being able to stop time. I also think a way to speed up time, for when you just have to do something else. You know like go to work to earn money to buy all those books to read. That would also help.

  23. Kilian Metcalf says:

I want Alan Rickman’s voice on mine, and does it come in forest green?

  24. library addict says:

Saw this this morning, but couldn’t figure out how to comment.

I would pre-order one with the voices of Colin Forth and Richard Armitage, yes I would.

I’ve had my GPS set to the British voice and called it Colin for years.

  25. Sandy James says:

I sooo look forward to your April Fools Day posts! Great job today–as usual!

  26. JoliC says:

Oh, if only. My son saw this and said, “Mom! You should get that! And can I borrow it?”

  27. Violet Bick says:

    @library addict:

That’s funny. My GPS is also set to British voice, but I call it Richard. (Unfortunately sometimes my GPS is also a Dick. Like saying “Right turn ahead” while the screen image points left.)

  28. Kelly S. says:

I LOVE the idea of being able to stop time! It would solve a lot of my challenges. I just check out 6 more books today, while having 15 already waiting for me to read them. Sigh.

Also, I trust that isn’t your actual mobile number on the site, right?

  29. UlrikeDG says:

    Pinkie Pie voice FTW!!! 😀

  30. Cecilia says:

It was awesome! I looked everywhere to place a comment right there, but couldn’t find it.
