  • Halfway to the Grave

Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

RECOMMENDED: Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost is $1.99. This is the first book in the Cat & Bones/Night Huntress series, and Sarah reviewed it back when it came out in 2007:

This nocturnal badassery comes to a screeching halt when Cat is kidnapped by an exceptionally strong nosferatu named Bones, who is really, really old, really, really strong, and really, really, really sure that Cat is working for someone, someone who wants him dead.

When Cat, sure her end is about two seconds away, tells him the truth about her life and mission, Bones refuses to believe her, until Cat’s emotions get the better of her and her eyes glow green. Bones, who is not a dumbass after many hundreds of years of existence, makes her an offer: train with him, and work with him as a vampire bounty hunter, or die.

Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother’s life. Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.

In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

  • Cold Iron

    Cold Iron by D.L. McDermott

Cold Iron by D.L. McDermott is $1.99! This is also the first book in McDermott’s paranormal romance series of the same name. Cold Iron has fae, archeology, and ancient Celts, so you know it’s going to be good. Though the heroine and plot were interesting, a few readers found the secondary characters more exciting to read about than the hero and heroine. Anyone looking to pick up this title?

The Fae, the Good Neighbors, the Fair Folk, the Aes Sídhe, creatures of preternatural beauty and seduction. Archaeologist Beth Carter doesn’t believe in them. She’s always credited her extraordinary ability to identify ancient Celtic sites to hard work and intuition—until she discovers a tomb filled with ancient treasure but missing a body. Her ex-husband, the scholar who stifled her career to advance his own, is unconcerned. Corpses don’t fetch much on the antiquities market. Gold does. Beth knows from past experience that if she isn’t vigilant, Frank will make off with the hoard.

So when a man—tall, broad shouldered, and impossibly handsome—turns up in her bedroom claiming to be the tomb’s inhabitant, one of mythic god-kings of old Ireland, Beth believes it is a ploy cooked up by her ex-husband to scare her away from the excavation.

But Conn is all too real. Ancient, alien, irresistible, the Fae are the stuff of dreams and nightmares, their attentions so addictive their abandoned human lovers wither and die. And this one has fixed his supernatural desire on Beth.

  • Endless Knight

    Endless Knight by Kresley Cole

Endless Knight by Kresley Cole is $1.99! The second book in her Arcana Chronicles series, this is a YA paranormal/fantasy romance. Though this is the second book in the series, the first book is available on Scribd, so you can catch up! Fans of Cole’s adult paranormal romance loved her foray into YA, though many warn this book ends with a pretty hefty cliffhanger. It has a 4.4-star rating on GoodReads.

  • Infinity

    Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon is $2.99! This is different from Kenyon’s usual fare, as this is a YA book with paranormal elements. The first in her Chronicles of Nick series, this book introduces Nick, a young boy about to start high school who gets introduced into the world of the Dark-Hunters. Yes, those Dark-Hunters. Readers noted that the book is enjoyable whether you’re familiar with Kenyon’s Dark-Hunters series or if this your first time being introduced to the world. Has anyone tried Kenyon’s YA books yet?

At fourteen, Nick Gautier thinks he knows everything about the world around him. Streetwise, tough and savvy, his quick sarcasm is the stuff of legends. . .until the night when his best friends try to kill him. Saved by a mysterious warrior who has more fighting skills than Chuck Norris, Nick is sucked into the realm of the Dark-Hunters: immortal vampire slayers who risk everything to save humanity.

Nick quickly learns that the human world is only a veil for a much larger and more dangerous one: a world where the captain of the football team is a werewolf and the girl he has a crush on goes out at night to stake the undead.

But before he can even learn the rules of this new world, his fellow students are turning into flesh eating zombies. And he’s next on the menu.

As if starting high school isn’t hard enough. . .now Nick has to hide his new friends from his mom, his chainsaw from the principal, and keep the zombies and the demon Simi from eating his brains, all without getting grounded or suspended. How in the world is he supposed to do that?

The Bronze Horseman by Paulina Simons is $ 3 today. I loved that book but be prepared for ugly crying galore!

  2. Gemma says:

This isn’t very on topic, but I’ve seen the cover of Halfway to the Grave a number of times now. Every time it leaps out at me. I’m convinced that there’s something very wrong with the size/length of the model’s legs in proportion to her body.

    Does anyone else think this?

  3. harthad says:

“Kiss of Steel,” recently enthusiastically reviewed here, is currently $1.99 at B&N and Amazon.

  4. Demi says:

I tried to be strong but the sales crack was to much – picked up the Frost AND “Kiss of Steel.” They were both on the TBR list so at least they’re saved for when the mood strikes 😉

  5. MelM says:

Gemma, the anatomy on Halfway to the Grave is very messed up. Her right arm is so long she must be able to scratch the back of her knee without bending over. I assume this gives her an advantage vampire hunting as she’ll be able to stand out of reach while staking them. Maybe the one freakishly long leg in the pointy shoe is also for stabbing vampires at a distance.

  6. KatieF says:

Gemma, Jim C. Hines did a series of photo shoots where he imitated the poses of women on the covers of science fiction and fantasy books as a way to encourage discussion about how often women are treated as sex objects at the expense of things like realism. He didn’t do Halfway to the Grave, but he did do At Grave’s End. There’s a Flickr set of all his poses.

  7. Brynhild says:

@KatieF, that was absolutely amazing. THE BEAR 😀

  8. Coco says:

    @Gemma

I think what you’re seeing is a trick of the photography. I don’t know the technical mumbo jumbo, but the type of lens used and editing effects somehow compress or…

Yeah, I really can’t explain it technically but you know those photos where a person is sitting with their legs out in front of them and their feet look gigantic because they’re closer to the camera? I think this is what happened here but they tweak it and it puts it all farther back somehow. I’ve heard this explained so well, and I’m doing a terrible job, but I’m pretty sure that’s what happened here.

    IDK

    I don’t even own a camera.

*head shaking, eyes rolling, humming to herself* Oh, if I only had a brain…

  9. LisaJo885 says:

Woot for “Endless Knight”! I’ve been waiting for this to be on sale since finishing “Poison Princess”. Which I will now need to re-read to remember what is going on. I picked up “Cold Iron” when I saw the sale notice on DA, and am all ready for the weekend to continue to rain so I can read it.
