Romantic Suspense with a Couple of Boxed Sets

  • SEAL of Honor

SEAL of Honor by Tonya Burrows

SEAL of Honor by Tonya Burrows is $1.99! This is the first book in her romantic suspense HORNET series, which I’m guessing has nothing to do with the insect. I’m assuming that the other titles in the series will follow the rest of the hero’s team members, at least that’s what I’m hoping! Readers thought Burrows captured a great balance between romance and suspense, though some felt the plot got a little bit muddled halfway through the book. It has a 4-star rating on GoodReads.

It’s a good thing Gabe Bristow lives and breathes the Navy SEAL credo, “the only easy day was yesterday,” because today, his life is unrecognizable. When his prestigious career comes to a crashing halt, he’s left with a bum leg and few prospects for employment that don’t include a desk.

That is, until he’s offered the chance to command a private hostage rescue team and free a wealthy American businessman from Colombian paramilitary rebels. It seems like a good deal—until he meets his new team: a drunk Cajun linguist, a boy-genius CIA threat analyst, an FBI negotiator with mob ties, a cowboy medic, and an EOD expert as volatile as the bombs he defuses. Oh, and who could forget the sexy, frustratingly impulsive Audrey Van Amee? She’s determined to help rescue her brother—or drive Gabe crazy. Whichever comes first.

As the death toll rises, Gabe’s team of delinquents must figure out how to work together long enough to save the day. Or, at least, not get themselves killed. Because Gabe’s finally found something worth living for, and God help him if he can’t bring her brother back alive.

Tall, Dark and Deadly Boxed Set by Lisa Renee Jones

Tall, Dark and Deadly by Lisa Renee Jones is $2.99! This is a set of three romantic suspense stories, plus a little bonus novella. Readers enjoy the headstrong heroines nearly as much as the sexy heroes, who all happen to be brothers. A few found a couple of the heroes to be on the verge of alphole territory, but the series seems to be well-enjoyed overall. It has a 4.2-star rating on GoodReads.

HOT SECRETS: Book 1 Royce Walker

  1. Celia Marsh says:

I will admit to loving the Black Knights books. I’ve noticedI have an odd fondness for romances with military lead characters–odd because I was raised as a pacifist and am very strongly anti-military overall. I think my fondness is probably for them as action movies in book form–which I also love (things go boom!) but have problems with them that the books tend to not have–they’re careful about collateral damage, and they tend to be changed by their actions (PTSD or more subtle influences)

  2. L. says:

Amy Tan’s The Valley of Amazement is $1.99 on Amazon. And has anyone ever read a Kathryn Le Veque book? I’ve seen her books countless times on the bestselling historical romance list but have never read her. Anyway, her Tender Is The Knight is free right now.

  3. Susan says:

Just a word of thanks. Sometime after a discussion about Amazon’s Smile program in the comments several weeks ago, I noticed that SBTB started rigging the Amazon links so they’re directed to my Smile account when I click. Very nice. 🙂

  4. Karin says:

I really, really like that guy on the cover of Seal of Honor. Nice but normal bod without overdoing the biceps or the mantitty.

  5. Joanna says:

Yep, agree with Karin about the cover of Seal of Honor – unlike the cover of Hard To Come By – that guy looks kinda freakish!

  6. Cordy says:

I want to love romantic suspense so much, and it tends to not work out for me. I’ve liked some Anne Stuart and some Carolyn Crane, but otherwise I keep striking out. I think a lot of romantic suspense misses for me because it’s more suspense than romance, but the suspense is often… not great. Right now, I’m reading “Playing Dirty”, by HelenKay Dimon, and I like the romance, but I find myself aggressively skimming the suspense chapters. They have the same issues I’ve run into in romantic suspense generally: the suspense is extremely talky, extremely “a terrorist is on the run with a vial of toxin”, a ton of talky office politics in the private military company… all the other dudes at the private military company are obsessed with each other’s romantic lives. I so want this genre to work for me, because I love both components, but it isn’t happening yet.

  7. Coco says:

    @ Corey

Try Allison Brennan. Her good guys are mostly cops and other law enforcement types. There are some military and private security types as well but they’re mostly drawn very realistically. Her bad guys are mostly criminals, some murderers, some rapists, some stalkers, and I think an arsonist. And, of course, there’s always the happily ever after. Most of her romantic suspense is connected at least a little bit. It starts with the Predator trilogy which starts with The Prey. She has several trilogies, all connected, and then it starts into the Lucy Kincaid series.
    She’s gritty and awesome.

Mariah Stewart also does some FBI type suspense. Hers are more loosely connected without a real overarching theme but characters in common. I believe hers start with the Dead books, Dead Wrong is the first one, and there are several trilogies and sets but there are also stand alone novels. After a while she stared writing the Chesapeake Diaries, not suspense but are still connected loosely and very good.

I’m also really enjoying the Aftershock series by Jill Sorenson. Perhaps a bit less realism but lots of fun and no terrorism. There is a case of amnesia though. And she writes a lot of “recovering criminals” as heroes and I find that interesting. Her new series about the Dirty Eleven Motorcycle Club follows the Aftershock series with some connections. Those will be erotic romantic suspense.

And I have loved everything by Sandra Brown.
    Everything.
    Ditto for Julie Garwood.

These are the authors that I can’t get enough of. This is my crack.

    I hope that helps.

And of course, it goes without saying that there are triggers. Triggers, triggers, triggers everywhere.

  8. Cordy says:

@Coco – thanks so much for the recs! I’m going to try some Allison Brennan, that sounds interesting.

I read the first Aftershock book, and thought it was quite good! The characters were slightly flat, but I remember being pretty impressed by how tight the plot was – it was much closer to how a movie plot would be than some of the other more talky/office-chatter suspense I’ve read, if that makes any sense.

I also read the first (I think) book in her MC series, with the ex-con hero and the psychologist heroine. I thought a lot of that book was really good, I was only bothered by the heroine’s casual attitude toward behavior that might cause her to lose her license. (I know too many people getting a PhD, I think. Heh.)

  9. Coco says:

    @ Corey

Yes! I just finished Riding Dirty this week and the whole time I was reading it I was conflicted over the idea of a therapist doing the things this therapist did. It was necessary for the plot but it was just wrong. (I know too many people getting therapy I think.)

I wonder if that won’t be a real big issue for some people. Thankfully, I was able to get past it and enjoy the book. Such a chore.

  10. Coco says:

Sorry! That was @ Cordy but I can’t type.

    Oh, no, it’s my autocorrect.

    Off to change my settings.

  11. SB Sarah says:

    @Susan:

You’re welcome! That was reprogrammed by request of some readers, and I’m glad you like it!

Also – today’s podcast might be of interest to those of you who are looking for suspense that you enjoy. Elyse and I interviewed HelenKay Dimon about action/adventure romance, and the difference between what she writes and the more gritty suspense with more peril (and triggers).

  12. Meghan says:

Right now A Town Called Valentine by Emma Cane and When Lightning Strikes by Brenda Novak are free on Amazon. Both are very good first books in thier series.
