Poison Studies, Fairy Tales, Regency Buffy, and Mercy Thompson on Sale

ETA: I’m not sure why I said “Fairy Tails” in the original title to this post. Honestly, my brain sometimes makes me laugh. Sorry about that!

  • Poison Study

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

RECOMMENDED: Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder is $3.99 at Amazon and Google Play (seriously, are those price matching fairies in a battle until the end of time?). Amanda recommends this book vigorously, saying she loved it so much she’s bummed it’s not matched at more vendors.

This book has a 4+ star average, and is the first book in the Poison series. It’s a mix of fantasy, adventure and mystery, and readers who loved it connected instantly with the heroine, Yelena.

    Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison…

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She’ll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly’s Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can’t control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren’t so clear…

  • Bella at Midnight

Bella at Midnight by Diane Stanley

Bella at Midnight by Diane Stanley, illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline, is $1.99 at most vendors. This is a middle-grade YA fairy tale fantasy romance, and it has a 3.8-star average. Readers who loved it really enjoyed the fairy-tale recasting of Cinderella, and liked the heroine. Animal harm alert, though: her kitten is killed in the chaos of the first chapter.

In the little village of Castle Down, in a kingdom plagued by war, lives a peasant girl called Bella. Blessed with a kind family and a loving friend, she manages to create her own small patch of sunlight in a dark and dangerous world. Bella is a blacksmith’s daughter; her friend Julian is a prince — yet neither seems to notice the great gulf that divides his world from hers.

Suddenly Bella’s world collapses. First Julian betrays her. Then it is revealed that she is not the peasant she believed herself to be: She is Isabel, the daughter of a knight who abandoned her in infancy. Now he wants her back, so Bella is torn from her beloved foster family and sent to live with her deranged father and his resentful new wife. Soon Bella is caught up in a terrible plot that will change her life — and the kingdom — forever. With the help of her godmother and three enchanted gifts, she sets out on a journey in disguise that will lead her to a destiny far greater than any she could have imagined.

  • The Rest Falls Away

The Rest Falls Away by Colleen Gleason

RECOMMENDED: The Rest Falls Away by Colleen Gleason is free at all vendors. This is the first in the 5-book Gardella Vampire series, which was originally published in 2007. Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the Regency.

I reviewed this book and gave it a B+, saying, “Unlike Buffy, she has to willingly and somewhat repeatedly choose to follow that path in order to become a full Venator and receive the amulet that will aid her in protecting and asskicking.  She could have opted out with no harm, no foul. So when life gets decidedly sticky for Vicky, she has to blame herself, and can’t start whinging about how unfair it all is. There will be others in generations to follow and she could leave the battle of good and evil up to them.

The power of that choice creates a strong heroine, but one who isn’t infallibly perfect – thank heavens.”

Beneath the glitter of dazzling nineteenth century London Society lurks a bloodthirsty evil…

Vampires have always lived among them, quietly attacking unsuspecting debutantes and dandified lords as well as hackney drivers and Bond Street milliners. If not for the vampire slayers of the Gardella family, these immortal creatures would have long ago taken control of the world.

In every generation, a Gardella is called to accept the family legacy, and this time, Victoria Gardella Grantworth is chosen, on the eve of her debut, to carry the stake. But as she moves between the crush of ballrooms and dangerous moonlit streets, Victoria’s heart is torn between London’s most eligible bachelor, the Marquess of Rockley, and her dark, dangerous duty.

And when she comes face-to-face with the most powerful vampire in history, Victoria must ultimately make a choice between duty and love.

  • Night Broken

    Night Broken by Patricia Briggs

Night Broken by Patricia Briggs is $3.99 at Amazon and Google:Play. My Audible account also tells me that if you purchase (or have purchased) the Kindle copy, the Audible audiobook is $4.49. Nice!

This is book 8 and the most recent in the Mercy Thompson urban fantasy series. I don’t recommend you start with this one – you kind of have to start with book one, Moon Called,– but if you’ve been waiting for a price drop, here’s your chance!

An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from a stalker. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right.

Soon, her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the farthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s stalker is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart.

  1. Lauren says:

The Rest Falls Away isn’t free a Barnes and Noble. Granted, it’s only $.99, but I thought I’d throw the heads up out there.

  2. Maryy says:

I will second the recommendation for Poison Study. I stole it from my sister probably 5 or 6 years ago and it’s one of those books I reread every year or so. The sequels were less awesome, but still pretty good.

  3. I looooooved Poison Study. I agree that the sequels were kinda disappointing, but Poison Study was fascinating.

  4. Kristen says:

I love everything Maria V Snyder. My hard copy of Poison Study has some wear from being loaned so much. May get this one too.

  5. Demi says:

“The Rest Falls Away” is a great book. I read part of the series back when it came out (2007?) and am planning to re-read this year, then finish up the series.

  6. Katie says:

I loved Poison Study so much but was thoroughly disappointed in the sequels. So much so that it kinda cheesed me off. I haven’t been able to go back to the series since. If you’ve never read it though, I say definitely go for book one, just maybe don’t go any further.

  7. Amanda says:

Poison Study was amazing and the sequels were okay, I have noticed that I tend to love the first books a Maria V Snyder trilogy and end up disappointed by the last two.

  8. Kelly S. says:

Thanks for the warning about animal being harmed in Bella book. The fact that “Bella” was in the title was a turnoff, but harming an animal is a huge rage inducing trigger for me.

  9. Kswan says:

The Rest Falls Away was full of bad choices and manufactured tragedy. By the end I was cheering for the vampires, and wishing the author had included a bit about Victoria’s special navel jewelry getting caught in her petticoats. Very stupid characters and poor world building!
