Carbs & Historicals: The First Pennyroyal Green, Memoirs of a Geisha, and A Bread Cookbook

  • The Perils of Pleasure

The Perils of Pleasure by Julie Anne Long

RECOMMENDED: The Perils of Pleasure by Julie Anne Long is $2.99 right now at most vendors. This is the first Pennyroyal Green book, which is a much-loved bestselling historical series. It’s a mix of small town romance set in the Regency but outside of London, and the two rival families and the setting make for some terrific reading. This book has a 3.7 star average on GR, and the series gets better and better with each book.

    A rescued rogue . . .

Scandal has rocked the city of London. Colin Eversea, a handsome, reckless unapologetic rogue is sentenced to hang for murder and, inconveniently for him, the only witness to the crime disappears. Then again, throughout history, the Everseas have always managed to cheat fate in style: Colin is snatched from the gallows by a beautiful, clever mercenary.

    A captivating captor. . .

Cool-headed, daring Madeleine Greenway is immune to Colin’s vaunted charm. Her mission is not to rescue Colin but to kidnap him, and to be paid handsomely for it. But when it becomes clear that whoever wants Colin alive wants Madeline dead, the two become uneasy allies in a deadly race for truth. Together, they’ll face great danger—and a passion neither can resist.

  • Memoirs of a Geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

READER RECOMMENDED: Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden is $2.99 at Amazon and Google:Play.

Heather S. sent me the alert for this book, and wrote, “I’m over the moon right now – Memoirs of a Geisha is on sale for Kindle for $2.99! I’ve had my eye on this book for a couple of years and it’s never been less than $9.99. Share it with the residents of the Pink Palace and rejoice! I love this book sooooo much. I’m a  sucker for awesomely detailed historical fiction, and Sayuri’s yearning for the Chairman is all the feels.”

A literary sensation and runaway bestseller, this brilliant debut novel tells with seamless authenticity and exquisite lyricism the true confessions of one of Japan’s most celebrated geisha.

Speaking to us with the wisdom of age and in a voice at once haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. It begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old girl with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. We witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimono, elaborate makeup, and hair; pouring sake to reveal just a touch of inner wrist; competing with a jealous rival for men’s solicitude and the money that goes with it.

In Memoirs of a Geisha, we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl’s virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion. It is a unique and triumphant work of fiction—at once romantic, erotic, suspenseful—and completely unforgettable.

Oh, wow. I just saw on JAL’s website that Olivia/Lyon’s book will be out in October. After years of anticipation, I don’t know if it’s better or worse to know that there are nine months to go!

  5. Leah says:

Memoirs of a Geisha is a great read for anyone who loves reading about other cultures. I will say I was sort of disappointed by the ending, and Sayuri seemed pretty selfish and callous at times in ways that were never really called out, but the descriptions are fantastic, and the way she talks about all the people and traditions just sucks you in.

  6. Azurina says:

As an FYI for anyone who reads Memoirs of a Geisha, it’s not an accurate portrayal of Geisha culture, and only reinforces western stereotypes of Asian females as passive women. So read it, enjoy it, but just bear in mind that it’s nowhere near being an accurate depiction of Japanese and Geisha culture.

  7. Emmabirbs says:

Thank you for the intro to the penny royal series. Just finished the 1st one and loved it! Can’t wait for payday to buy more of them.
