Not one book, but I do like the suggestions above!

  2. Sushma says:

John Kennedy Toole’s A Confederacy of Dunces is one book that always makes me smile.

  3. Erica H says:

old JAK books, Nora Roberts- so very many,Julie Garwood historicals, Lisa Kleypas’ Hathaway books, Nalini Singh, and Julie James

  4. Jenny says:

Bellwether by Connie Willis is always a good comfort read.

  5. Nettle says:

Sunshine, by Robin McKinley, even though I wouldn’t exactly call it a happy book.

  6. Sarah Wynde says:

Wow, so many books I love in this list. I’ve winnowed out my bookshelves dramatically over the years, but Robin McKinley, Dianna Wynne Jones, Anne McCaffrey, and LM Montgomery still have spots. The winner for me, though, is Lois McMaster Bujold, with the specific book probably being Paladin of Souls. It’s not exactly a happy book, but I love it. Second place, probably Bet Me by Jennifer Cruisie.

  7. Lostshadows says:

Hmm, I can name books that are guaranteed to make me sob like a baby, but I can’t think of any that I read to cheer myself up. My go to for that is movies.

  8. Bube says:

Dream a little Dream by Susan Elizabeth Phillips 🙂

  9. Ellie says:

My Dog: A Paradox, by the Oatmeal; anything starring Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman.

  10. JPeK says:

I share the comfort-read with another poster who said The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. It’s that or a novel from McCaffrey’s Dragonrider series. Both Mc’s are childhood favorites.

  11. Mark V. says:

I actually would love to learn to knit, I need warm socks lol

  12. Vicki says:

Georgette Heyer’s The Masqueraders is my go-to book when all else has failed.

  13. Amanda says:

I have been slowly reading JD Robb’s In Death series this past year. They don’t exactly make me happy but they have been a much needed escape during a very hectic year.

  14. sandy l says:

When I am stressed, I go back to my favorite urban fantasy books, such as Kate Daniels or Mercy Thompson. My favorite romances that I have returned to Indiscreet by Mary Balogh and Scoundrel by Elizabeth Elliott. I also love to re-read the Benjamin January series by Barbara Hambly.

  15. AndiLeigh says:

The books that makes me most happy are probably Good Omens by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman and anything by Ilona Andrews and Victoria Dahl.

  16. Kimberley says:

I’m with @Helen R-S on Rilla of Ingleside. Such a wonderful book <3.

If I'm really needing an escape, I break out The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. Also not light-hearted, but it’s familiar, and it’s so detailed that it requires all my attention and thus distracts me from other crap very effectively.

For a happy books for a quick pick-me-up, I go to trad regs from Carla Kelly, Michelle Kasey, and Joan Wolf.

  17. Abi says:

So hard to pick just one, but I just read the Night Shift anthology while going through the worst time of my life and it definitely evened the scales of life a little.

  18. Mistfox says:

The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley, A Lady of Quality by Georgette Heyer, or The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley.

  19. Anne says:

Smooth Talking Stranger by Lisa Kleypas. I have read that one time and time again.

  20. Kacey S says:

Anne of Green Gables or The Cynster series by Stephanie Laurens

  21. maddbookish says:

I’m torn between Georgette Hayer’s The Nonesuch and Agnes and the Hitman by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer. Leaning more towards Agnes and the Hitman. Mainly because I love crazy curvy ladies and morally flexible guys who quietly take care of business.

  22. susan says:

My go-to books are Lord of Scoundrels, various Carla Kelly Christmas stories, and The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

  23. SaraC says:

To Say Nothing of the Dog, by Connie Willis

  24. Maritza says:

What makes me happiest to read. It’s more authors than a title. Nora Roberts or Nalini Singh. They just make me happy.

  25. Cheryl McInnis says:

Definitely the Harry Potter series. It is so easy to read, engrossing and exciting. Also, it ends with everyone happy and fulfilled…important when you need cheering up!

  26. Amanda V says:

There are too many to choose from but I read Persuasion at least once a year.

  27. Eva says:

Murder with Peacocks by Donna Andrews. I don’t even know why, but it always cheers me up.

  28. Kathy N says:

    Julia Quinn books

  29. Ruth says:

Oh gosh, this book-makes-you-happy question is a tough one…gonna go with Austen’s Pride & Prejudice!

  30. Katrina says:

I have so many comfort reads, but my favourite has to be Howl’s Moving Castle. I just LOVE Sophie so much.

  31. Qualisign says:

More than a happy book, I go for a safe book, usually an historical by G. Heyer or C. Kelly. OR one of P. Briggs’ older books (esp. The Hob’s Bargain).

  32. Krista says:

This is a really hard question–I definitely have go-to books for when I need a good cry, but I’m not sure I can think of a book that I would re-read to cheer myself up. I’d probably pick a new book that came highly recommended with some of my personal catnip so I could really lose myself in the story. Luckily I have this website (and Goodreads, and book club friends) to help me find such books. 🙂

  33. Liz says:

Outlander always makes me happy, as does Ann Rinaldi’s Time Enough for Drums, and anything by Sarah Dessen

  34. Cecilia says:

The book that makes me happiest is Jane Eyre. It’s such a perfect You Go Girl novel, and besides, it has the Best Quote Ever right at the beginning:

“What is hell?” “A pit full of fire.” “And should you like to fall into that pit, and to be burning there forever?” “No sir.” “What must you do to avoid it?” “I must keep in good health and not die.”

(it can’t get more inspirational than that, seriously)

  35. Cate says:

Nalini Singh’s Lord of the Abyss, Liz Carlyle’s No True Gentleman, or Mary Jo Putney’s One Perfect Rose are my go to books of choice for when I need cheering up .

  36. Kellie says:

The Corinthian by Georgette Heyer. It’s so silly and fluffy and is my catnip too.

  37. Heather S says:

“A Knight in Shining Armor” pretty much delivered exactly what I needed to read when I reread it a few months ago. It’s a wonderful feeling to have a book that is exactly what you need, exactly when you need it! “Pride and Prejudice” is always an awesome go-to, as well.

  38. Hillary says:

Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce. Actually, anything by Tamora Pierce. 🙂

  39. Renee says:

What Happens in London by Julia Quinn always make me feel better, as does Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine.
