  • Code Name Verity

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

Code Name: Verity by Elizabeth Wein is the Audible Daily Deal today at $3.95. This is an unabridged audiobook narration of just over ten hours, and is performed by Morven Christie and Lucy Gaskell. If you’ve got travel coming up, this book might be a terrific companion – it has a 4+ star average, and many, many readers have adored this WWII story.

Oct. 11th, 1943-A British spy plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France. Its pilot and passenger are best friends. One of the girls has a chance at survival. The other has lost the game before it’s barely begun.

When “Verity” is arrested by the Gestapo, she’s sure she doesn’t stand a chance. As a secret agent captured in enemy territory, she’s living a spy’s worst nightmare. Her Nazi interrogators give her a simple choice: reveal her mission or face a grisly execution.

As she intricately weaves her confession, Verity uncovers her past, how she became friends with the pilot Maddie, and why she left Maddie in the wrecked fuselage of their plane. On each new scrap of paper, Verity battles for her life, confronting her views on courage, failure and her desperate hope to make it home. But will trading her secrets be enough to save her from the enemy?

A Michael L. Printz Award Honor book that was called “a fiendishly-plotted mind game of a novel” in The New York Times, Code Name Verity is a visceral read of danger, resolve, and survival that shows just how far true friends will go to save each other.

  • Her Christmas Earl

Her Christmas Earl by Anna Campbell

Her Christmas Earl by Anna Campbell is 99c right now. This is a Regency holiday novella and it has a 3.9-star average on GoodReads. The heroine goes into the hero’s bedroom to retrieve a letter sent by her sister, and ends up rather compromised. Oh, dear. Readers who liked this story loved that the heroine, who is in the background when her more beautiful sister is around, changes slowly but believably during the course of the story.

    No good deed goes unpunished…

To save her hen-witted sister from scandal, Philippa Sanders ventures into a rake’s bedroom – and into his power. Now her reputation hangs by a thread and only a hurried marriage can rescue her. Is the Earl of Erskine the heartless libertine the world believes? Or will Philippa discover unexpected honor in a man notorious for his wild ways?

Blair Hume, the dissolute Earl of Erskine, has had his eye on the intriguing Miss Sanders since he arrived at this deadly dull house party. Now a reckless act delivers this beguiling woman into his hands as a delightful Christmas gift. Is fate offering him a fleeting Yuletide diversion? Or will this Christmas Eve encounter spark a passion that lasts a lifetime?

  1. Leah says:

I like the cover art for Her Christmas Earl. She’s pretty, but not wasp-waisted and flawlessly airbrushed. She actually looks like a realistic woman, and that alone might get me to pick it up!

  2. @Leah, I like it, too. She reminds me of Polly Walker as Jane Fairfax in the 1996 adaptation of Emma.

  3. LauraL says:

Her Christmas Earl has been on my Wish List and is now on my Kindle. After a near steady diet of holiday books for the last month, I am finding I like the Regency Christmas stories the best.

  4. Lara says:

I cannot recommend Code Name: Verity enough–however, if you’re listening to it on the road, there will be a point where you’re going to have to pull over and sob heartbrokenly. Fair warning.

  5. Tam says:

I read ‘Verity’ last Christmas, and stayed up until 2 am to finish it. When I was done, I was a complete puffy-faced red-eyed ruin, so I don’t think I actually got to sleep until 3. It’s a gorgeous, meticulously-researched book, but not for the faint of heart.

  6. CarrieS says:

OMG Code Name Verity is f’ing AMAZING.

  7. Cecilia says:

Unfortunately The Mail-Order Christmas Brides Boxed Set is €2.89 here on amazon.it and more on other vendors 🙁 I detest these geographical price changes for ebooks!

  8. Anna says:

It’s not even available in Australia.

  9. Karin says:

I already mentioned how much I loved Her Christmas Earl on the “Watcha Reading” thread, but I can’t recommend it enough.
