Books on Sale: Bestsellers and the History of Alcoholic Plants

Today we have history-nerd and botany-nerd catnip, a reader recommendation, and two books no one talks about, really, all on sale!

  • The Drunken Botanist

The Drunken Botanist by Amy Stewart

The Drunken Botanist by Amy Stewart is $1.99 digitally. This is a nonfiction exploration of plants that can be turned into alcohol, and the history of each. It has a 3.9-star average, and seems like a perfect gift for science nerds, people who enjoy learning the history of the things they eat and drink – or both!

Sake began with a grain of rice. Scotch emerged from barley, tequila from agave, rum from sugarcane, bourbon from corn. Thirsty yet?  In The Drunken Botanist, Amy Stewart explores the dizzying array of herbs, flowers, trees, fruits, and fungi that humans have, through ingenuity, inspiration, and sheer desperation, contrived to transform into alcohol over the centuries.

Of all the extraordinary and obscure plants that have been fermented and distilled, a few are dangerous, some are downright bizarre, and one is as ancient as dinosaurs—but each represents a unique cultural contribution to our global drinking traditions and our history.

This fascinating concoction of biology, chemistry, history, etymology, and mixology—with more than fifty drink recipes and growing tips for gardeners—will make you the most popular guest at any cocktail party.

  • The Fault in Our Stars

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is $2.99 at Amazon right now. This is a book no one has ever heard of, and no one has talked about it in the history of ever. Ever.

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

  • King Dork

    King Dork by Frank Portman

READER RECOMMENDED: King Dork by Frank Portman is $2.99. Vicki commented yesterday that she bought this book on sale, and said, “It’s not a romance but King Dork by Frank Portman is on sale for 2.99. I suppose you could call it YA – it is set in a high school, there are many music references, there is a mystery. I must say I love this book with a burning love. It is Catcher in the Rye for a new generation (if you read the book, you will know what this means).”

Tom Henderson (a.k.a. King Dork, Chi-mo, Hender-fag, and Sheepie) is a typical American high school loser until he discovers the book, The Catcher in the Rye, that will change the world as he knows it.

When Tom discovers his deceased father’s copy of the Salinger classic, he finds himself in the middle of several interlocking conspiracies and at least half a dozen mysteries involving dead people, naked people, fake people, teen sex, weird sex, drugs, ESP, Satanism, books, blood, a secret code, guitars, monks, witchcraft, the Bible, girls, the Crusades, a devil head, a blow job and rock and roll.

And it all looks like it’s just the tip of a very odd iceberg of clues that may very well unravel the puzzle of his father’s death and oddly reveal the secret to attracting semihot girls.

Being in a band could possibly be the secret to the girl thing but good luck finding a drummer who can count to four.

  • Outlander

    Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon is $2.99 right now at Amazon. If you’d been holding off reading it until your turn at the library came up, or until it was on sale, well, that’s a pretty low price. This is the first book in the series, and if you were curious, the unabridged audio version is 33+ hours long. So you can drive to the moon while listening!

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

  1. My sister loves gardening and alcohol, so I gave her The Drunken Botanist for her birthday last year. She told me it was fascinating and awesome, so it might make a great gift for the gardeners in your life.

  2. Kim says:

I have a Nook, and some of the reviews on the B&N website mention that the book is hard to read on the Nook (small font, not enlargeable). Does anyone know if that problem has been corrected?

Of course, for $1.99, I’ll probably just pull the trigger anyway!

  3. Kim says:

By the way, I was referring to The Drunken Botanist in my last post. I bought it anyway, and came back to add that Amy Stewart’s book “Wicked Plants” is also on sale for $1.99 for Nook. (Yes, I bought it too. I am a science nerd.)

  4. ohhellsyeah says:

You know who would really enjoy the Drunken Botanist? Claire Randall Fraser.

  5. Tanja says:

The Drunken Botanist sounds fascinating. I will but it for my brother for Christams. He likes alcohol especially this home-made. Thank you for sharing.
