  • The Winter Sea

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley

RECOMMENDED: The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99 as a Kindle Daily Deal today, and that price is being matched at some vendors – yay! If there had to be a Christmas Day deal, this is a great one. Kearsley’s books are a mix of contemporary and paranormal and historical, with time slip stories across parallel storylines and incredible atmosphere. Need an escape? Grab one of these and start reading!

This book was a Sizzling Book Club Pick, and when it was on sale last year, I wrote, “It’s absorbing, beautiful, and made me tear up at the end. It’s amazing – buy it for yourself or for someone who likes historical romance, mystery, or really, really powerful writing.”

    History has all but forgotten…

In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.

Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.

But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth-the ultimate betrayal-that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her…

  • The Shadowy Horses

The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley

The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley is also $2.99 today, and is being price matched at some vendors, too. Yay! This is historical/contemporary time slip romance as well, with an archeologist heroine on a dig site. It has a 3.8-star average, so if you’re looking to complete your Kearsley collection, it’s a great day!

THE INVINCIBLE NINTH ROMAN LEGION MARCHES FROM YORK TO FIGHT THE NORTHERN TRIBES. AND THEN VANISHES FROM THE PAGES OF HISTORY.

Archaeologist Verity Grey has been drawn to the dark legends of the Scottish Borderlands in search of the truth buried in a rocky field by the sea.

Her eccentric boss has spent his whole life searching for the resting place of the lost Ninth Roman Legion and is convinced he’s finally found it—not because of any scientific evidence, but because a local boy has “seen” a Roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long-dead comrades.

Here on the windswept shores, Verity may find the answer to one of the great unsolved mysteries of our time. Or she may uncover secrets someone buried for a reason.

  • The Rose Garden

The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley

The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley is also $2.99 today. This book was published in 2011, and has a 4-star average on GoodReads.

The heroine returns to her childhood summer home in Cornwall to scatter her sister’s ashes and finds a portal to the 18th century in the rose garden, and there’s a pretty hot dude back there, too. In time, I mean, and also in the rose garden.

“Whatever time we have,” he said, “it will be time enough.”

Eva Ward returns to the only place she truly belongs, the old house on the Cornish coast, seeking happiness in memories of childhood summers. There she finds mysterious voices and hidden pathways that sweep her not only into the past, but also into the arms of a man who is not of her time.

But Eva must confront her own ghosts, as well as those of long ago. As she begins to question her place in the present, she comes to realize that she too must decide where she really belongs.

From Susanna Kearsley, author of the New York Times bestseller The Winter Sea and a voice acclaimed by fans of Gabaldon, du Maurier, and Niffenegger alike, The Rose Garden is a haunting exploration of love, family, the true meaning of home, and the ties that bind us together.

  • Stories I Only Tell My Friends

Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe

RECOMMENDED: Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe is a memoir by an actor who has been working since he was a teenager. Hubby read this book, and said it’s more honest than your typical celebrity memoir, and it’s really funny, particularly the earlier sections from when he was a teenager first starting out.

A wryly funny and surprisingly moving account of an extraordinary life lived almost entirely in the public eye

A teen idol at fifteen, an international icon and founder of the Brat Pack at twenty, and one of Hollywood’s top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles his experiences as a painfully misunderstood child actor in Ohio uprooted to the wild counterculture of mid-seventies Malibu, where he embarked on his unrelenting pursuit of a career in Hollywood.

The Outsiders placed Lowe at the birth of the modern youth movement in the entertainment industry. During his time on The West Wing, he witnessed the surreal nexus of show business and politics both on the set and in the actual White House. And in between are deft and humorous stories of the wild excesses that marked the eighties, leading to his quest for family and sobriety.

Never mean-spirited or salacious, Lowe delivers unexpected glimpses into his successes, disappointments, relationships, and one-of-a-kind encounters with people who shaped our world over the last twenty-five years. These stories are as entertaining as they are unforgettable.

  • Eleanor and Park

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

RECOMMENDED: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell is $2.50 at Amazon and Google:Play. This book is a reader favorite, with a poignant ending and a powerful set of characters.

When I collected recommendations for the best YA of 2013, this book was mentioned constantly. NPR’s Linda Holmes wrote, “Ultimately, Eleanor & Park is an enormously optimistic book about love and connection, and about the capacity of people to be powerfully consoling and healing to each other, even when they’re 16. And for that healing to be meaningful, there has to be some honesty about the injury.

    Two misfits.
    One extraordinary love.

Eleanor… Red hair, wrong clothes. Standing behind him until he turns his head. Lying beside him until he wakes up. Making everyone else seem drabber and flatter and never good enough…Eleanor.

Park… He knows she’ll love a song before he plays it for her. He laughs at her jokes before she ever gets to the punch line. There’s a place on his chest, just below his throat, that makes her want to keep promises…Park.

Set over the course of one school year, this is the story of two star-crossed sixteen-year-olds—smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try.

  1. Darlynne says:

The Kearsley books on sale are my favorites. So many great stories.

  2. LisaJo885 says:

I really enjoyed the Rob Lowe book. It was fascinating to read his memories of the people he encountered during his starting-out-phase, as he’s not much older than me, and I grew up watching him and all these other actors in his generation. Being neighbors and hanging out with the Estevez/Sheen family? Ripe for mischief there, and he reports it all.

  3. LisaJo885 says:

Also, am I the only person who couldn’t finish Eleanor & Park? I enjoy YA, and have read lots of it but I just don’t have the same squee as everyone else seems to about this book.

  4. Vicki says:

Apparently I have already gifted the Kearsley books to everyone I know who has a nook or a kindle. Too bad. The price is right.

  5. Anna says:

I can’t buy those Kearsleys due to geographical restrictions but there is a box set we Antipodeans can buy at a reasonable price.

  6. Lora says:

I LOVED E&P and thought it was so deft and beautiful and bittersweet. I’m making my husband read it so we can talk about tit together. It is one of my top ten books…East of Eden, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Bel Canto, Love Walked In, Garden Spells, Fingersmith, Perfect Fifths, Mockingjay, Eleanor and Park, The Heiress Effect (no I do NOT have a definite type lol)

  7. Lora says:

I did, however, find Fangirl annoying so I’m not a total Rowell disciple.
