  • Garden Spells

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen

RECOMMENDED: Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen is $1.99! This author became an auto-buy for me after I read this book as a part of a GoodReads reading challenge. I would liken this book to women’s fiction with a magical realism slant. It’s heartwarming and beautiful and has a 4-star rating on GR. The biggest complaint seems to be the book is a little predictable, but we all need an easy read now and again. It’s the first book in the Waverley Family series.

In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.…

The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.

A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.

When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other.

Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own…

  • Darkfever

    Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning

RECOMMENDED: Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning is $1.99! This is the first book in the Fever series. I’ve read the entire series, with the except of the latest book, which changes protagonists. In my opinion, the series starts out great, and it begins with an urban fantasy plot rather than paranormal romance. Many readers felt the setting was one of the strongest things about the story, but a few couldn’t get on board with the heroine, MacKayla. It has a 4.1-star rating on GR.

“My name is MacKayla, Mac for short. I’m a sidhe-seer, one who sees the Fae, a fact I accepted only recently and very reluctantly.

My philosophy is pretty simple – any day nobody’s trying to kill me is a good day in my book. I haven’t had many good days lately. Not since the walls between Man and Fae came down. But then, there’s not a sidhe-seer alive who’s had a good day since then.”

When MacKayla’s sister was murdered, she left a single clue to her death – a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone. Journeying to Ireland in search of answers, Mac is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to master a power she had no idea she possessed – a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae…

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho…while at the same time, the ruthless V’lane – an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women – closes in on her. As the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: to find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book – because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control both worlds in their hands…

  1. Leah says:

Darkfever was great, or at least the first books in the series I read were. I agree that the heroine can be a little hard to take… she initially comes across as shallow and tends to make bad decisions that put her in harm’s way based on her bruised ego. I do think she grows as the books progress, however, and I loved that the scary stuff was genuinely creepy. I think I had more of an issue with the hero being a little too cookie cutter Alpha and underdeveloped otherwise, but maybe that changes some past the two books I read.

  2. Melanie says:

I love Garden Spells! It’s the book that really kicked off the magical realism thing for me.

  3. garlicknitter says:

Uh, Garden Spells sounds cool, but when Claire uses her magic plants in her catering, do her customers know what they’re getting? ‘Cause if she’s just dosing people without telling them, that’s pretty much the opposite of cool.

  4. Darlynne says:

@garlickknitter: That idea is certainly worth pondering. It’s been a while since I read the book and my recollection was that Claire understood what people needed. Did they know she added specific things? I don’t think so, but they understood her food provided them with something they didn’t find elsewhere.

I suppose a case could be made about, say, adding addictive substances without knowledge or consent, but I never felt that. Honestly, at the time, I wished I knew someone like Claire who seemed to sort things out so readily and correctly. Now I’m definitely going to have to re-read this book.

  5. The IF List says:

    Hey Amanda!

We’d love to know who you think should be cast as Claire and Sydney in a Garden Spells movie! We’re thinking Reese Witherspoon as Claire. Everyone can Dream Cast and support the book for the big screen here: http://iflist.com/stories/gardenspellswaverlyfamilyseries#

  6. Susan says:

Yippee. Thanks for including Surprise-Inside Cakes here. It’s been on my wishlist for awhile, but I couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger. Of course, after I clicked on it, I saw *a bunch* more cookbooks I also just had to have, thus totally negating any savings accrued. 🙂

  7. UlrikeDG says:

I picked up Garden Spells from a display of garden-themed books at my local library. I loved it. I immediately checked my library for other books by the same author and checked out The Sugar Queen next. I wasn’t nearly as impressed.

  8. Dorothy says:

So, does anyone else think that “Garden Spells” sounds like just an Herbology-tilted novelization of “Practical Magic”?
