Books on Sale: Reader-Recommended Charles Lenox Series, Plus Robyn Carr

Among today’s Kindle Daily Deals are Robyn Carr’s Four Friends, and six books in Charles Finch’s Charles Lenox series, a Victorian-set mystery series that is much-loved by several members of the Bitchery.

When the first book, The Beautiful Blue Death, was on sale last year, Barb in Maryland said, “My husband and I are both devoted readers of Finch’s Charles Lenox books.  We find them to be well written with a solid mystery in each story and a really good look at the English political system of the day.  The romance is very low key, but quite delightful.  There are very interesting continuing characters in addition to our hero and heroine.”

Laura in PA added, “I adore Charles Finch’s series featuring gentleman sleuth Charles Lenox! I recommend them to everyone I know. The romance builds as the books go on. I love the descriptions of London during the Victorian period, and the smart way the mysteries get investigated.”

Not everyone in the comments enjoyed them – Joanna said she found them hard to get into – but if you know a mystery fan who has some long travel hours coming this week, or you need a gift for someone who loves historical fiction and mysteries, the whole set is $18 plus tax.

  • A Beautiful Blue Death

A Beautiful Blue Death by Charles Finch

A Beautiful Blue Death by Charles Finch is $2.99 today only – as are the following five books in the series. This is book 1 in the Charles Lenox series, and it has a 3.6 star average. This is historical mystery set in the Victorian period, and readers who love it report a slow building romance between the leads. Helloooooo, catnip.

On any given day in London, all Charles Lenox, Victorian gentleman and armchair explorer, wants to do is relax in his private study with a cup of tea, a roaring fire and a good book. But when his lifelong friend Lady Jane asks for his help, Lenox cannot resist another chance to unravel a mystery, even if it means trudging through the snow to her townhouse next door.

One of Jane’s former servants, Prudence Smith, is dead – an apparent suicide. But Lenox suspects something far more sinister: murder, by a rare and deadly poison. The house where the girl worked is full of suspects, and though Prudence dabbled with the hearts of more than a few men, Lenox is baffled by an elusive lack of motive in the girl’s death.
When another body turns up during the London season’s most fashionable ball, Lenox must untangle a web of loyalties and animosities. Was it jealousy that killed Prudence? Or was it something else entirely, something that Lenox alone can uncover before the killer strikes again – disturbingly close to home?

  • The September Society

The September Society by Charles Finch

The sitting room looked as familiar as the back of his hand, and immediately Lenox took a liking to the young man who inhabited it. He saw several small artifacts of the missing student’s life—a frayed piece of string about two feet long of the sort you might bind a package with, half of a pulpy fried tomato, which was too far from the breakfast table to have been dropped, a fountain pen, and lastly, a card which said on the front The September Society. . . .

In the small hours of the morning one fall day in 1866, a frantic widow visits detective Charles Lenox. Lady Annabelle’s problem is simple: her beloved son, George, has vanished from his room at Oxford. When Lenox visits his alma mater to investigate, he discovers a series of bizarre clues, including a murdered cat and a card cryptically referring to the September Society.

Then, just as Lenox realizes that the case may be deeper than it appears, a student dies, the victim of foul play.

What could the September Society have to do with it? What specter, returned from the past, is haunting gentle Oxford? Lenox, with the support of his devoted friends in London’s upper crust, must race to discover the truth before it comes searching for him, and dangerously close to home.

  • The Fleet Street Murders

The Fleet Street Murders by Charles Finch

The third book in the Charles Lenox series finds the gentleman detective trying to balance a heated race for Parliament with the investigation of the mysterious simultaneous deaths of two veteran reporters.

It’s Christmas, 1866, and amateur sleuth Charles Lenox, recently engaged to his best friend, Lady Jane Grey, is happily celebrating the holiday in his Mayfair townhouse. Across London, however, two journalists have just met with violent deaths–one shot, one throttled. Lenox soon involves himself in the strange case, which proves only more complicated as he digs deeper. However, he must leave it behind to go north to Stirrington, where he is fulfilling a lifelong dream: running for a Parliamentary seat. Once there, he gets a further shock when Lady Jane sends him a letter whose contents might threaten their nuptials.

In London, the police apprehend two unlikely and unrelated murder suspects. From the start, Lenox has his doubts; the crimes, he is sure, are tied, but how? Racing back and forth between London and Stirrington, Lenox must negotiate the complexities of crime and politics, not to mention his imperiled engagement. As the case mounts, Lenox learns that the person behind the murders might be closer to him–and his beloved–than he knows.

  • A Stranger in Mayfair

A Stranger in Mayfair by Charles Finch

Returning from a continental honeymoon with his lifelong friend and new wife, Lady Jane Grey, Charles Lenox is asked by a colleague in Parliament to consult in the murder of a footman, bludgeoned to death with a brick. His investigation uncovers both unsettling facts about the family he served and a strange, second identity that the footman himself cultivated.

Going into the boxing clubs and public houses, the Mayfair mansions and servants’ quarter of Victorian London, Lenox gradually realizes that an old friend may be implicated in the footman’s death. Soon a suspect is arrested, but Lenox has his doubts. Desperately trying to balance the opening of Parliament and what he feels sure is a dark secret, he soon discovers that the killer is someone shockingly innocuous—who may be prepared to spill blood again, even a detective’s.

In Detective Lenox, Lady Grey, and their circle of close associates, Charles Finch has created a cast of inviting, flesh-andblood characters. His evolving series, with its keen eye for period detail and razor-sharp plotting, offers readers an unparalleled brand of charm, sophistication, and suspense.

  • A Burial at Sea

A Burial at Sea by Charles Finch

1873 is a perilous time in the relationship between France and England. When a string of English spies is found dead on French soil, the threat of all-out war prompts government officials to ask Charles Lenox to visit the newly-dug Suez Canal on a secret mission.

Once he is on board the Lucy, however, Lenox finds himself using not his new skills of diplomacy but his old ones: the ship’s second lieutenant is found dead on the voyage’s first night, his body cruelly abused. The ship’s captain begs the temporarily retired detective to join in the hunt for a criminal. Lenox finds the trail, but in the claustrophobic atmosphere on board, where nobody can come or go and everyone is a suspect, he has to race against the next crime—and also hope he won’t be the victim.

At once a compulsive murder mystery, a spy story, and an intimate and joyful journey with the Victorian navy, this book shows that no matter how far Lenox strays from his old life, it will always come back to find him.

  • A Death in the Small Hours

A Death in the Small Hours by Charles Finch

Charles Lenox is at the pinnacle of his political career and is a delighted new father. His days of regularly investigating the crimes of Victorian London now some years behind him, he plans a trip to his uncle’s estate, Somerset, in the expectation of a few calm weeks to write an important speech. When he arrives in the quiet village of Plumley, however, what greets him is a series of strange vandalisms upon the local shops: broken windows, minor thefts, threatening scrawls.

Only when a far more serious crime is committed does he begin to understand the great stakes of those events, and the complex and sinister mind that is wreaking fear and suspicion in Plumley. Now, with his protege, John Dallington, at his side, the race is on for Lenox to find the culprit before he strikes again. And this time his victim may be someone that Lenox loves.

  • Four Friends

    Four Friends by Robyn Carr

Four Friends by Robyn Carr is a Kindle Daily Deal at $2.99 today only. This is women’s fiction more than contemporary romance, and follows four (obviously) friends (yup, really) through major changes in their lives. It has a 3.7-star average, and readers who enjoyed it loved the slow build to the relationship between the four women, all of whom live on the same street.

This would also make a lovely gift for someone you know, possibly someone you might like to keep out of the kitchen while you’re cooking this week, maybe?

Gerri can’t decide what’s more devastating: learning her rock-solid marriage has big cracks, or the anger she feels as she tries to repair them. Always the anchor for friends and her three angst-ridden teenagers, it’s time to look carefully at herself. The journey is more than revealing—it’s transforming.

Andy doesn’t have a great track record with men, and she’s come to believe that a lasting love is out of reach. When she finds herself attracted to her down-to-earth contractor—a man without any of the qualities that usually appeal to her—she questions everything she thought she wanted in life.

Sonja’s lifelong pursuit of balance is shattered when her husband declares he’s through with her New Age nonsense and walks out. There’s no herbal tonic or cleansing ritual that can restore her serenity—or her sanity.

Miraculously, it’s BJ, the reserved newcomer to Mill Valley, who steps into their circle and changes everything. The woman with dark secrets opens up to her neighbors, and together they get each other back on track, stronger as individuals and unfaltering as friends.

  1. Lina says:

I don’t know if it’s because I read authors like Rachel Gibson, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and Kristan Higgins that I find Robyn Carr to be a really slow read. The covers look great and the plots should draw me in. But once I’m there it’s so slow… Anybody have this issue? Should I try again?

  2. Sandra says:

Those are some absolutely gorgeous covers on the Finch books. Almost makes me wish I still bought paper.

  3. SB Sarah says:

Aren’t they beautiful? When I was formatting the entry I kept looking closely at the screen. I think I left a nose spot on the monitor. So pretty.
