  • The Year We Fell Down

The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen

The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen is $2.99! This is the first book in The Ivy Years series and was brought to our attention by reader Cat, who did some serious squeeing over this book:

As I commented on Sarina Bowen’s Facebook post about the sale, I devoured-yet-savored this like I would cheesecake. I whipped through this thing on a Saturday night because it was so engrossing but at the same time I just marveled at it, like, “How is this book so good?” Bowen does a great job of portraying disability in romance, and just likeComing in from the Cold she took a plot angle that makes the whole romance genre seem fresh again–I mean, I love the concept of genre and its constrictions and its tropes (I swear having a guaranteed happy ending is my favorite thing about romance, too many nasty shocks from mysteries and then of course fantasy…I’m a bit of a genre geek) but I love when authors can play with those tropes (cough Courtney Milan cough) or create something fresh and exciting even within various constraints.

Anyone interested? I know I am.

The sport she loves is out of reach. The boy she loves wants someone else.

    What now?

She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead.

Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. He’s way out of Corey’s league.

    Also, he’s taken.

Nevertheless, an unlikely alliance blooms between Corey and Hartley in the “gimp ghetto” of McHerrin Hall. Over tequila, perilously balanced dining hall trays, and video games, the two cope with disappointments that nobody else understands.

They’re just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All Corey knows is that she’s falling. Hard.

But will Hartley set aside his trophy girl to love someone as broken as Corey? If he won’t, she will need to find the courage to make a life for herself at Harkness — one which does not revolve around the sport she can no longer play, or the brown-eyed boy who’s afraid to love her back.

  • Better When He’s Bad

Better When He’s Bad by Jay Crownover

Better When He’s Bad by Jay Crownover is $1.99! This is the first book in Crownover’s new Welcome to the Point new adult series. A lot of her heroes tend to be tattooed bad boys, which (personally) is right up my catnip alley. The heroine is also the half-sister of the hero’s BFF. Readers loved the heroine and her sense of independence, though there were a few who had a hard time finding the chemistry between the characters. It has a 4.1-star rating on GR.

    Welcome to the Point.

    There’s a difference between a bad boy and a boy who’s bad . . . meet Shane Baxter.

Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he’s the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn’t care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there’s a new player in the game, and she’s much too innocent, much too soft…and standing directly in his way.

Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She’s always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con The Point has ever produced.

Bax terrifies her, but it doesn’t take Dovie long to realize that some boys are just better when they’re bad.

  • Trust in Me

Trust in Me by J. Lynn

Trust in Me by J. Lynn (otherwise known as Jennifer L. Armentrout) is $1.99! This new adult book is slightly different than most as it’s book 1.5 in her Wait for You series. The first book is Wait for You and is told through the heroine’s perspective, while this second book is told from the hero’s perspective.  This version also barely edges out the first book in terms of GR ratings, holding a 4.29-star rating compared to Wait for You‘s 4.23. Readers who have already dipped into the first book loved the switch in POV, while those new to the series said they didn’t mind starting with this one. Any readers out there who have read both and care to comment?

From the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of WAIT FOR YOU, this is the story of Cam and Avery’s sizzling romance as you’ve never seen it before, told exclusively from Cam’s perspective…

Cameron Hamilton is used to getting what he wants, especially when it comes to women. But when Avery Morgansten comes crashing into his life – literally – he finally meets the one person who can resist his soulful baby blues. But Cam’s not ready to give up – he can’t get this feisty and intriguing girl out of his head.

Avery has secrets, secrets that keep her from admitting the feelings Cam knows she has for him. What will it take to help him break down her barriers and gain her trust? Or will he be shut out of Avery’s life, losing his first real shot at the kind of love that lasts forever?

  • The Geography of You and Me

The Geography of You and Me by Jennifer Smith

The Geography of You and Me by Jennifer E. Smith is $2.99! Though this doesn’t seem to be labeled as part of a series, Carrie reviewed an earlier book of Smith’s, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight and gave it a B+. This is more of a young adult romance than a new adult romance, and it has a 3.7-star rating on GR. Readers really seemed to enjoy the setup of the book – a blackout in New York – but some found it a little too saccharine and predictable.

Lucy and Owen meet somewhere between the tenth and eleventh floors of a New York City apartment building, on an elevator rendered useless by a citywide blackout. After they’re rescued, they spend a single night together, wandering the darkened streets and marveling at the rare appearance of stars above Manhattan. But once the power is restored, so is reality. Lucy soon moves to Edinburgh with her parents, while Owen heads out west with his father.

Lucy and Owen’s relationship plays out across the globe as they stay in touch through postcards, occasional e-mails, and — finally — a reunion in the city where they first met.

A carefully charted map of a long-distance relationship, Jennifer E. Smith’s new novel shows that the center of the world isn’t necessarily a place. It can be a person, too.

  1. Lammie says:

The Year We Fell Down is really good, and I usually shy away from New Adult books. I really enjoyed it, as well as the other books in the series. I don’t usually like novellas as much as full length books, but Blonde Date (book 2.5 in the series) is really good, and is currently free, on Amazon at least.

  2. Leigh says:

I’ve read the both of the J.Lynn books in the series mentioned and I thought the first book in the series was good. Book 1.5 really didn’t add much to the plot, at least not enough to make me really interested. I’d say unless you really loved the first book, skip 1.5.

  3. maybeimamazed02 says:

LOVED The Year We Fell Down, its two sequels, and Blonde Date (agree with Lammie, I usually don’t enjoy novellas, but this one was adorable). Highly recommended!

  4. Sarah Wynde says:

I’m going to chime in with another vote for The Year We Fell Down, and all of its sequels. I’ve actually re-read the first book a couple of times because I enjoyed it so much. Oh, and I think I probably wrote an Amazon review, too, which I hardly ever do. But it was so good. They all were.

  5. Katie Lynn says:

Another complete and hearty recommendation of the Year We Fell Down (and its sequels). Incredibly well done, with interesting characters. The thought and research into what someone who has a serious injury that derails their expected life plans is so perfect, and everything is written in a believable and enjoyable way. I’ve read it twice since first purchasing it about three months ago.

  6. Melissa says:

I LOVED The Year We Fell Down. I snapped up the rest of the series once I finished it and was not disappointed. All the characters have issues that are heavy heavy stuff, but the author deals with them wonderfully. I agree that Blonde Date was especially good and satisfying for a novella!
